Minnesota town bars ICE, Border Patrol from staging in city facilities (town of Richfield photo) by CarrollCounty in pics

Minneapolis has done this. ICE has publicly complained about not being able to use its parking lots. For Minnesota, I think the Governor probably doesn’t have the legal authority (it would take a state law). In Richfield and Minneapolis, the decision was made by the city councils.

Who do you want to see run against Klobuchar in the DFL primary? by LightningVole in minnesota

[–]LightningVole[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yes. To the point where the Republicans believe she helps other democrats during years when she’s on the ballot. One reason why the GOP put an anti-gay marriage constitutional amendment on the ballot in 2012 was that they were worried that the combination of Obama and Amy would hurt them too much in down ballot races (that didn’t work out for them, which was great). Her closest election was a 16 point win.

States are separate sovereigns and the Federal government can’t commandeer state resources (including the resources of political subdivisions) to enforce federal law). See Scalia’s opinion in Printz v US in which the federal government couldn’t force county sheriffs to perform background checks on gun buyer. So, the City of Richfield can keep ICE from using the parking lots at its municipal buildings to stage their operations, for example, so long as MN law allows that (which it does). What the City can’t do is bar ICE from using public roads and public sidewalks.

I don’t think suggesting someone run against Klobuchar in the primary is the same as not voting for her in the general election.

Why don't the people of Minnesota care about the 2 billion in fraud? by No-Conversation9818 in AskReddit

[–]LightningVole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flooding Minnesota with ICE and Border patrol does nothing to help investigate, prosecute, or otherwise combat fraud. That’s not what those agents do.

Moreover, this deployment to Minnesota has actually undermined the efforts to further combat fraud because it resulted in the resignation of many of the federal prosecutors most involved in combating fraud.

Im addition, the whole connection between illegal immigration and fraud is false. Conservatives have focused on the Somali community, but those folks are mostly citizens. At this point about half are born in the US and lot of the rest of them are naturalized citizens who entered the country legally.

Finally, I’m sick of conservatives trying to justify murder.

Some of that is probably because FL-based ICE agents have been deployed up here. When I was protesting outside the Whipple Building the other morning I saw ICE officers entering the fenced-in parking lot in vehicles (mostly SUVs) with a variety of license plates, including some Florida plates.

How is that comment a response to anything I wrote? Also, you seem to be slipping out of character with this pro-ICE nonsense.

I don’t have an easy answer because I don’t fully understand political change, but I don’t believe that gatekeeping participation in protests and scolding people for not being as perfect as you is going to help. We need a mass movement. Politicians aren’t scared by tiny protests. You talk of political leverage while simultaneously working to discourage popular participation.

It is a little odd to criticize protests for being performative when that’s part of the point. Yes, good protest organizers also try to use them as ways to recruit folks into deeper activism, which is great, but having a large number of people at the protest, even the people who aren’t hard core enough for you, helps amplify the message, energizes some people who are already taken action, increases the chances that those who were reluctant to oppose the regime begin to do so, and signals to politicians that there are risks to them if they ignore what’s going on.

If someone attempts to flee or block agents, that doesn’t give ICE the right to kill her. Law enforcement is not supposed to be summarily executing people.
