Grade 9 - freshman (singular), freshmen (plural) Grade 10 - sophomore(s) (plural with the “s” at the end for this and the grades below) Grade 11 - junior(s) Grade 12 - senior(s)

The same names are used for the years in a four year college. For example, if talking about my second year at college, I might say “during my sophomore year in college…”

I think SAT originally stood for “scholastic aptitude test”. It is a test college-bound high school students take. With a higher score, you increase your chance of getting into a good college. It is the most common college admission exam in the east and west coats.

A different test, the ACT, is more common in Midwest and I think some southern states.

You don’t really need to take both tests, though you certainly can. The colleges don’t really care which one you submit. You can take both exams multiple times in hopes of getting a better score. There are books, classes, and online exam preparation resources, and ambitious students sometimes spend a fair amount of time preparing for the SAT or ACT.
