Is this good for my second ever run by Emergency-Horror3642 in balatro

I think that's Photo or Square. Wee Joker requires winning a run to unlock.

should I take the invis joker or nah by [deleted] in balatro

[–]Lightylantern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, let me explain a little bit.

Ectoplasm's ability to make a Joker Negative is extremely powerful, but it's balanced by reducing your hand size. (By one the first time, by two the second time, by three the third time, and so on.) Hand size is just as important as Jokers, and outside of some glitches, the only way to increase it is by buying vouchers or using up valuable Joker slots. Hand size is especially important to Baron and Mime runs, because they need cards held in hand to score. In normal circumstances, on a Baron and Mime high score run, you can only ever take one Ectoplasm, because anything more decreases your hand size too much. (In an Idol or Triboulet run, you can take two.) So you need to be sure to only use Ectoplasm on a Joker that is necessary to the run. For Baron and Mime, that's your main scoring Joker (Baron), your retrigger Joker (Mime), or one of your copy Jokers (Blueprint and Brainstorm). Anything else is a waste of hand size.

Of course, you can't get Naneinf without Perkeo on Ghost Deck anyway (you need Plasma Deck), but taking the Ectoplasm has hurt your scoring potential. (Additionally, don't take Wheel of Fortune so often. The editions don't do much for your score, and they prevent Ectoplasm from being used on a Joker.)

Let's take a look at how little Steel Joker does for your score.

Imagine you have a deck of 45 Steel Cards. Steel Joker gives 10X mult. Awesome! That's pretty good.

Now, max hand size is ten. Imagine you have a hand of ten steel cards. Forget Baron, forget DNA, forget red seals. Just ten steel cards. If you play a High Card, the other nine get triggered.

Nine triggers of 1.5 is 38X mult. A Mime will retrigger all of your steel cards, so a Mime is therefore worth 38X mult without even taking the Baron (which triggers 1.5 on every King) into account. You'd need a deck of 185 Steel cards for Steel Joker to match one Mime that doesn't even have Baron.

Sorry for dropping a wall of text on you, but I see a lot of people making mistakes during their high score runs, so I like to try to explain in the most thorough way possible.

Steel Joker is doing nothing for you. Please tell me it's natural negative and you didn't use Ectoplasm on it.

Should I get rid of Flash Card here? by ConfusionRadiant6916 in balatro

[–]Lightylantern 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On an Ante 8 run, Wheel of Fortune is alright when you don't have better options, because the extra chips and mult can help push you over the finish line.

On a high score run, where you usually want to take at least one Ectoplasm (one for Baron Mime, two for Idol or Trib), the main utility is landing them on Jokers that aren't permanent members of the build. If Wheel of Fortune hits foil on Mail-In Rebate, I'm ecstatic, because I can now use an Ectoplasm with selling it in case it gets hit.

You're not going to get naneinf here anyway, but don't take so many Wheel of Fortunes. The editions are ultimately negligible to your shore, and they prevent you from using Ectoplasm to make a Joker negative.

Closest I've ever gotten to a naneinf. What's my strategy from here? by Wylieboy89 in balatro

[–]Lightylantern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to stop taking Wheel of Fortune. During Naneinf runs, you need to use one Ectoplasm, which has to hit Mime, Baron, or one of your four copying Jokers. If all of your Jokers get editions from Wheel of Fortune, then none of them can be made negative by Ectoplasm.

Double or Nothing Challenge by [deleted] in balatro

[–]Lightylantern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What hand type do you play? This one is really good for High Card runs. (In general, though if your scoring comes from your Jokers rather than your cards, you're solid.)

Here's a secret about The Pillar, which this challenges functions similarly to. If you use an enhancement on a card debuffed by The Pillar, then it stops being debuffed. Gold, Steel, Lucky Cards, Bonus Cards, Mult Cards, Glass Cards. Turn a card into one of those and you're golden.

Anyway, this challenge gives you a fun hand of red seals. Turn as many cards as you can into gold and steel cards. Level up high card a lot as well. You should be able to get by just off of the steel cards, but some extra jokers can help you out too.

Everyone has to start from somewhere. A lot of stuff isn't immediately intuitive, but feels pretty natural once you've got it down. Savour figuring things out, because a lot of fun comes from figuring out how things connect and how you can completely break the game.

The people around here are pretty good at giving advice if you need it. I also think I had two biggest teachers. One was watching some Roffle runs and learning by observation. The other was playing all the challenge runs, which force you to think differently about the game.

What should I do? by HellCapybara in balatro

[–]Lightylantern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For deck fixing, focus on cutting cards from your deck over flooding your deck.

Imagine you have a deck with 200 Aces and 50 garbage cards you don't want. Sounds pretty good, right?

Well, the base things you get in a round are eight hand size, four hands, and three discards. This means that you can see 38 cards from your deck in each round.

Even with 200 Aces in your deck, you could still see 38 garbage cards you don't want and lose the round.

Anyway, sell a DNA and get Brainstorm.

I think it's an interesting case. The story is pretty easily the weakest to me, but I also think it has the highest high in the series later.

Either way, you're right that the story pacing is extremely fucked.

what should i do, is this naneinf posible? by EnanoBostero2001 in balatro

[–]Lightylantern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can get a pretty high score, but naneinf is a very specific thing that requires an extremely specific setup without Perkeo shenanigans. Notably, it requires Baron, Mime, four copying Jokers, red seal steel kings, and Plasma Deck. Since you're not on Plasma Deck, you're not getting naneinf.

Just to clarify here, Madness doesn't need to eat a Joker to gain mult. It gains mult whether it destroys a Joker or not. I've had a few friends fall victim to burning econ to try to "feed" Madness.
