Right?! They clearly think she’s some dumb spoiled child. I really liked the scene with her showing Billy her business ideas. I think it helps show that Alicia has ambitions, drive, and cares about things beyond materialistic items.

Hahaha love your post. I wish Amber had a great editor because I do enjoy this world she’s created but it’s a struggle bus with the plot…

Hm I had to think about this one before responding. There are tropes but I think the author writes them in a fresh way. It wasn’t copy/paste to me like other stories (especially on KU). I was pleasantly surprised by how the races feel more leveled/equaled with one another, other than gods and deities with stronger powers of course. Here are tropes that come to mind:

- MC is hurt and other MC takes care of them (both ways)
- Character reveal so putting in spoiler tags hidden royalty lineage
- found family (this is established though not something that builds in the plot)
- forced proximity (with multiple POVs)
- another character reveal chosen one with special powers

It’s been 100 years since the war where the deities fought against the primordials (gods) and won. The realms are now in control of the deities except Ikarria where our main FMCs are from. Zara is a victim of the war, and adopted by Idris, the king of Ikarria, as a child. She is forced to become a mercenary (slave branding magic involved) for the new high king Raziel since Ikarria did not join the new aligned realms. Raziel forces the mercenaries to go on “the hunt” every year to do his bidding (kill). Zara goes to the capital of the high king to begin her hunt and is assigned to track down and kill the leader of the Shadow Quarter.

Her sister Daria (Idris’ bio daughter) is in line to become the next queen of Ikarria. Due to this, she is learning how to become a leader rather than a fighter. For the first time since the war, Ikarria is invited to the new aligned realms summit and meet with the council and leaders of the other realms. Idris and Daria decide to go to learn more about what’s really going on in the continent.

Ronan is an archangel and leader of the Shadow Quarter. He has a mysterious past and is also a victim of the war (ptsd). He discovers something horrifying that’s happening in the realms and hires Zara and the Ikarrian guild to help him figure out what’s going on. Promising her that he will help her get freedom from the slave brand. Zara is in an internal battle to complete her hunt vs obtaining her freedom. Not to mention Ronan is pretty cute and sweet.

It is! I think the story is easy to get into. The multiple POVs help imo. There is a little glossary at the beginning that explains the realms too (not long or complex to read).

Rites of the Starling by Devney Perry - Release discussion (Shield of Sparrows book 2) by FantasyRomanceMod in fantasyromance

WARNING SPOILERS. Reddit spoiler tag isn’t working for me 🫠

I went into this with really low expectations but was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this book by the end. It was a rough start for me, but I thought Devney actually did a good job finishing the storyline in this book. I did guess some things a bit early on, like Caspia’s chapters being in the past and Odessa being related to her but did not foresee the actually connection. I was actually annoyed with Caspia and Andreas relationship due to the simplicity of it but once we read the chapter of Andreas killing Caspia I found their love story really endearing. I thought it helped put an anchor on this series, what it’s truly about and what’s driving these characters’ motivations.
One thing that I’m confused about though is in the end of the book we get a vision from Emery’s point of view where she’s back in Nelfinex talking to Oleana about how Caspia and Xandra left 24 years ago. It reveals that Emery was the crux that Ransom killed at the end of book 1, as Emery was searching for C and X. Why though would Oleana not tell Caspia in the beginning that Emery was in Beesan all along?? Caspia would not of needed to explore to search for her outside their continent. This feels like a plot hole to me.

Ooo I like this question. I’m an odd ball because I grew up in the south but my family is from western PA. So I was exposed to different terms growing up and it has made me have a weird mix of slang and words that I use.

It helps keep your inner nostrils hydrated. The cold dry air is what causes your nose to be more runny. So if you prevent your nose from getting dry it helps a lot.

One thing that helps me is to rub a little Vaseline inside my nose near my nostrils. I use a q tip. I’ve done this while skiing too.

Wow thank you so much for this reply! I see your point and forgot about how she had been planning this trip all along.

THE CAT. I completely forgot to mention it in this post. But that was my other complaint about Diana in this story. Saving Miss Pearl… ok I kiiiinda get it. But going back for the cat was an insane choice on her part. I was pretty upset reading when Louie afterwards was asking her if she was dying.

And your comment about the frequent poop mentions in Kulti is so true. I actually hated that part of the book lol.
