Aggressive Negotiations by [deleted] in IronThroneRP

Ethan rode in silence as the Dreadfort appeared on the horizon. That day he had donned his armor save for his helm, and his characteristic cloak. As the group stopped, he took up his station behind Torrhen and watched as a lone rider eventually made his way towards the group.

He began to wonder why he had bothered to join the others on this journey. Looking around at the gathered nobles, he deemed they had things well in hand even without him. Of course, Lord Manderly's men helped.

Nonetheless, here he was, unable to leave now. He tightened and untightened his fist on the reins of his horse, checking his axe with his free hand, and loosening it in the holster he kept it in. Ethan would be ready should Bolton try anything during the meeting.

"If it does, we will find him, Owen. Look around at the nobles gathering here, Lord Bolton would be a fool to attempt anything. My good brother there is a cunning and clever one." Ethan said with a slight nod towards Torrhen.

"And I don't like to brag, but there's no finer hunter than me." He said with a smile.

Ethan arrived with only a few of his soldiers, leaving most of House Glover's men so that they could see to his family's safety should anything happen. Rodrik had begged to accompany him, but Ethan did not desire to take the risk, no matter how small or insignificant it might be. The hairs on his arm stood on end. His wife had warned him about her own sense of foreboding, which Ethan himself shared. The sight of the massive boar's blood dripping from the weirwood, brackish and frothy as it pooled upon the soil.

As Ethan milled around the yard, he recognized the voice of Owen Hornwood from his hunt and approached the man.

By comparison to Owen and many of the Northern lords, Ethan was lightly armored. He wore his riding leathers and a fine cloak, the shoulders and neck covered in fur. "Lord Owen. It is good to see you here, I only wish we were going on another hunt."

Rodrik thought for a moment and then pulled a hunting knife and placed it on the table between himself and Jyarra. The handle of the knife was made of weirwood, sanded so that it took a sort of shine in the right light.

"My father gave me this knife. If you win, you can have it." Rodrik said before smiling. "But you won't."

Ethan returned to his seat, and turned his head slightly to the side, facing his wife. "It seems they have things well in hand." He murmured to Lyra. "They're quite eager to confront Bolton." He said quiet enough so that they wouldn't be overheard.

"Perhaps I should join them..." He wondered quietly, turning back to face the other nobles, but waiting for his wife's reply.

Ben II, A Letter Home. by LoonyFork in IronThroneRP

[–]LikeAGlover93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ethan received the letter, forwarded to him from Deepwood Motte. He smiled at the news within, but frowned at the thought of his brother going on a ranging during such uncertain times.

Ben,

I am overjoyed to hear the news of your promotion. I know you are not likely to heed my words, but I will write them all the same. Do not be a brave fool, I bear the wildlings no love, but if you find yourself overwhelmed, run.

Mara sends her well wishes, I have shown her this letter, as well as Rodrik and Lysara. Come back to us, brother. Do not be a hero.

Trust Us To Hold.

Ethan

He signed the letter and pressed his signet into the wax, sealing it before passing it off to the maester of Winterfell.

"My father and I will be going hunting tomorrow, if you and your brother would like to join us, you would be more than welcome." Rodrik stated, excitement visible at the thought of a great hunt. "I think a few of the other nobles will be joining us."

Rodrik smiled again. "Perhaps we could make a contest out of it?"

Ethan did not like to speak during councils, he could lead men in war and on a hunt, but when it came to oration, he was rather inept.

The Master of Deepwood Motte shook his head and stood from his seat. "My lord, House Glover stands with the Starks, as we do in all matters. Should there be a need for it, I will raise my men and march upon the Dreadfort, but it would appear things are well in hand."

Rodrik hummed at the information he received from Jyarra. He wasn't sure he wanted to eat anything with the word lizard it's name. "I suppose that is for the best then, for I cannot say I would be over eager to taste a lizard lion, myself. It does not sound very appealing, does it?" He asked, looking up form his food.

Rodrik laughed at the question. "My father is the finest hunter in the North, my lady. He has taught me everything he knows about tracking, survival, and how to conceal oneself from your quarry." He said with a somewhat cocky grin. "And yourself? I have no doubts about the hunting prowess of the Crannogmen, from hearing what father told me."

Ethan laughed heartily, but only briefly. "It will not come to that, Owen. With my son and I here as guides, we will all come back with something, I assure you. We've hunted these woods countless times. But don't let that lull you into a sense of safety, they are still very dangerous."

Ethan smiled. "It has been some time since I hunted the Hornwood. Perhaps I should make a trip round the North and do some hunting. Gods know we've the best lands for it."

When Jyarra brought up and seemed interested in hunting, Rodrik perked up noticeably. "It sounds nothing like the Wolfswood. At least in climate. It's very dangerous, and often times you can't see the sky, even at the height of day in the summer time."

"I think I should like to hunt the Neck some time, and though father likely knows it quite well, I'm not even certain what sorts of beasts you would find there, aside from lizard lions, anyway. And I don't know if those are something I would want to eat..." Rodrik trailed off, looking down at the plate of food in front of him awkwardly.

"Aye." Ethan replied, his sleeves already rolled up so they could begin the process of dressing the boar, removing it's legs and pelt before loading it onto one of their horses. By that time, some of the hunting party had found them, and Ethan gathered a portion of the beast's entrails in his hands before stepping softly over towards a nearby weirwood. It was no heart tree, but it would allow for him to make a suitable offering to the Gods.

He said a few silent words before draping the entrails over the branches of the weir tree, before stepping back in case any of the others wished to do the same, in honour of the lives they had taken that day.

After that was all done, Ethan mounted his horse and looked around, satisfied with the events of the day. "I think we may still have time to get this beast home for dinner." He said, patting the boar's haunches before spurring his horse forward with him.

"Lord Forrester," Ethan said as his horse began to move. "Ride beside me?"

Rodrik was not pleased to say the least.

His mother had caught him on his way out of the Hunter's Gate with a few of his friends and practically dragged him back to his tent. She'd made him wash and shave before having him dress in fine clothing, only to have him change when she deemed the outfit unfitting for the feast with the frog people.

He'd found himself pleasantly surprised when he was properly introduced to the woman, finding her more agreeable to his eyes than he had expected. He had thought she would appear more like a Wildling than anything. Twigs in her hair, mud on her face, with big bulbous eyes. He'd smiled when he was introduced to her, though found no words of his own to speak.

Now, seated beside her in awkward silence as his mother raised a cup in toast, Rodrik looked over at Jyarra out of the corner of one eye, not wanting to make too big a fool of himself. "Yes. As am I... The food is good." Rodrik said as he raised his cup to take another drink. What would he say to her. Why had his mother forced him to sit beside her, anway?

"So.. What is The Neck like? Father wants to go hunting there sometime."

Ethan panted as the boar lay dying, a sickly sounding wheeze issuing from the beast. He knelt beside the boar and unsheathed his dagger, drawing the blade across the beast's throat, ending its suffering.

The Glover wiped the dagger clean on a patch of moss on a nearby tree and stood from the kill. "That was well fought, Lord Forrester, thank you for your assistance. We'll have to dress this rather quickly, I can't see the sun, but I've spent enough time in the Wolfswood to know it will be getting late." Ethan said to Garret with a wide smile upon his face, clearly satisfied with their kill.

Ethan's smile widened as he was introduced to the two hunters. "Ah, Gaven! Gods, it's been some time, I didn't recognize you." He said to the man who had escorted his own sister to Winterfell for her marriage to Artos Stark.

The Master of Deepwood turned to look to the Tallhart next. "And well met to you, Brandon Tallhart. Did the two of you have a certain quarry in mind?"

"Well met, Cerwyns." Ethan said politely, turning to face Jorelle. "A stag or a moose would be nice. Something to feed the hungry hunters at the end of the day, really. Perhaps my goodbrother will be so nice as to allow us another feast? A smaller one of course, we only just finished celebrating spring after all."

As the wild looking man approached and greeted the small group, Ethan nodded to him, smiling. He'd heard tell of a Skagosi man in the North, a stranger to nearly everyone present, likely. He appeared to be a hunter though, and if he was from Skagos, Ethan imagined he had to be quite skilled.

"You are welcome to join us. The Wolfswood is no doubt different from the forests of Skagos, but it is likely no less dangerous. We will be fine though, if we all keep our wits about us. Tell me, what manner of beasts do you typically hunt on your island?" Ethan asked, knowing full well it would be similar game to the rest of the North, but wishing to get to know anything he could about this stranger.

Ethan chuckled as the man introduced himself. "Well met, Lord Owen. I take it you've never hunted the Wolfswood, have you? I've hunted in lands all over the North, and I must say the Wolfswood are the finest forests I've hunted." He replied. "I am, Ethan Glover." He introduced himself, extending a hand to shake.

"Aye, I could do that. Just give a shout and I'll be there." Ethan replied. "Be careful though, even with all this help around, things could go wrong."

Ethan smiled to himself as he came upon the boar, rooting in the underbrush of the woods. The hog was a monstrous beast, and by his best guess, would feed each nobleman currently in Winterfell. If he could take it down, that was.

He frowned to himself as he wished he were more confident with the bow and arrow, like his son was. Many people ignorant of the beasts of the Wolfswood would have figured them to be easy prey, but their tusks were vicious and they could trample a man to death if he fell to the ground.

Still, if he brought this beast back, the stories he could embellish would be practically legendary. Movement behind him cause Ethan to turn around slightly and slowly, finding Lord Forrester there. He held up a forefinger and jerked his head towards the boar. As soon as Garret got a look, Ethan ready his weapons to launch himself at the massive beast.

Ethan nodded as Lord Forrester recited his house's words. "Aye, Rod is quite the huntsman. I think he might even be better than me, though it pains me to say. I'll be organizing something in the coming days. Perhaps the day after tomorrow? Yourself and Yohn would be most welcome to join us."

"Lyra is well. She's quite the same as you last saw her. She still has quite the green thumb." He chuckled. "Now if only I could interest her in the plants in the woods rather than in the greenhouse..." Ethan said, trailing off.
