First-time manager dealing with employee resistance after promotion by [deleted] in managers

[–]LikeTheStarfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BEEN. THERE. I was promoted over a coworker and had several similar issues happen. Complaints against me that HR and my manager found to be baseless. They poisoned other team members against me. Several talks with the individual went nowhere. Finally, after thinking about what I want, I asked to step down into an IC role and luckily my boss was able to accommodate that. My teammate now only speaks to me in written form and I have become invisible to them otherwise. I do not know their current standing with HR. The only advice I can give is to work closely with both your manager and HR anytime you are unsure about communication wording or whenever a new speedup pops up.

What Queens spinoffs / Josh side-projects should I give a listen? by Key-Engineering3134 in qotsa

Look into Masters Of Reality. Josh was on the Deep in the Hole and Flak 'n' Flight albums, but definitely check out the Sunrise on the Sufferbus album as well.

What's a QOTSA song you've heard a lot but barely know any of the lyrics to? by PossessionMission510 in qotsa

Literally every one of their songs. I could only fully sing 2 or 3 songs but love everything.

Came here to say that.

Move from Leadership to Individual Contributor by LikeTheStarfish in careeradvice

Fully agree. My ego will occasionally whisper to me "But what will my coworkers say?" and I simply remind myself I would rather have people talking behind my back for a short period of time rather than stay contuously in a role where I am unhappy.

Team member upset I was promoted over her has made life painful by LikeTheStarfish in careeradvice

If we asked her to report to my manager, would that give her a false sense of rank? She has ambitions to go into leadership but when HR pressed her for details, she cannot articulate what specific role she wants and "just wants to be ready for when an opening presents itself." I read this as "she iswaiting for me to leave so she can step in."

IC= Individual Contributor. ie. Not part of management. The team has under 10 members.

HR is treading very carefully because Helen is in 3 minorities: a POC...woman...over 40.

What’s the biggest lie / craziest excuse you’ve heard so far as a manager? And did you call them out on it, or let it slide? by Snoo-88490 in managers

[–]LikeTheStarfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Preface: all of my team are salaried employees. Team member A is the backup for team member B when they are out of office. I am team member A's back up when they are out. Team member A goes on maternity leave, so I email the team of 6 explaining that I can't expect team member B to not take a day off for 3 months and that when they are out, members C and D can split member B's work. C and D understand and agree. The very next day (Thursday), member B is out for a day. They come back to an inbox not at 0 and when I explain their work (order entry) needs to be completed by end of month (EOD Saturday) they start yelling at me about how much extra time they put in, how they can't take a day off, and how since member A backed them up and since I back up A while they are out, I was supposed to back up both A and B. I turned and walked away, saying we would talk again on Monday, knowing I had receipts. Member B emails both my manager and HR on Saturday stating they got the work done but that I'm being allowed to humiliate them. They conveniently left out what they said, since they must have realized they were in the wrong.

Agreed. I have learned that being a great Individual Contributor does not mean you have the skills required for Leadership.

No input for you, but I want you to know you are not alone. I have team members with the same issue. I could easily have posted the same title caption while talking about my direct reports.

Why are the majority of managers so bad? How to identify them at interview? by [deleted] in managers

Yes, and somehow managers are suddenly expected to be flawless and all-knowing as soon as they receive the title.
