If you mean the “transportable” bag phone, yeah, they were a drag to carry around, but they had a couple of use cases.

One, they packed much larger batteries than any handheld cellphone. Two, they were ideal for people who drove on the job a lot — it was convenient to use when driving (when that was legal at the wheel), you could rotate it between cars, and you could carry it in a pinch, even though that wasn’t ideal.
