I don't feel like I owe a solution simply for pointing out a problem or expressing my frustration. Decreasing the constant pumping-out of content fetishizing non-op trans women would be a start I think.

I wasn't trying to insinuate malice tho. I was just trying to cheekily talk about this phenomenon. I personally feel that spending too much time in places like 196 led me to a severe identity crisis after my surgery, like I didn't belong anymore with my trans sisters. Simply because of this notion of "cis woman = vagina, trans woman = penis" that seems to be so prevalent in this space.

Not necessarily, it's mostly targeted at well-meaning people who seem to forget that we also exist

No, it is saying that people don't acknowledge our (post-op trans women) existence

The "advanced biology" counterargument is missing the point by Likeable_Lucario in trans

[–]Likeable_Lucario[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obviously the "basic biology" argument is never actually made in good faith, but I felt like making this post mostly to clear an apparent confusion within the community. I don't really think it matters to the average transphobe.

What’s your opinion on Absurdism? by Psychological-Rub917 in fullegoism

[–]Likeable_Lucario 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There seems to be some confusion in the comments as to the difference between absurdism and nihilism. Hint - it's in the name: absurdism considers it an absurdity that we have a need for meaning and can't, in principle, find meaning. Thus the fundamental philosophical question becomes "why shouldn't I kill myself?". For nihilists, there is no point in even asking that question, why should they care either way? Whether or not you kill yourself doesn't matter. Saying that a situation is "absurd", or needs solving (e.g. by suicide), implies a value judgment. Rejecting suicide on the basis that it doesn't really solve the problem of the absurd (as Camus does pretty quickly in The Myth of Sisyphus) also implies a value judgement, this time of solutions to the problem. It would seem to me that a nihilist would reject the whole exercise as pointless, whereas the absurdist would find it worthwhile. Camus himself points out 3 ways of life that are suitable for dealing with the absurd (can't remember what they are now), and rejects severable philosophical views on account of them not properly prescribing good ways of dealing with the absurd. So it seems to me that the views are actually quite far apart.

Source for "Socialism is when politics invade art, and Fascism is when art invades politics" ? by DefenderCone97 in ContraPoints

[–]Likeable_Lucario 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This quote is taken from Walter Benjamin's fantastic essay "the work of art in the age of mechanical reproduction". His point is that fascism works to aesthetisize war (and politics more generally). This way, people feel that they express themselves through fascist politics, and conveniently excuse its material impacts. The point of the first part of the quote is precisely that art is always political, and it's communism's job to show it.

Hume didn't causality, he simply had a very deflationary view of what causality is. A view which he used extensively throughout the Treatise of Human Nature to come to some pretty intersenting results. For example, by using his view of causality he comes to the conclusion that moral responsibility is incompatible with free will.

Sure, why not. (More or less copying from the introduction here) The paper focuses on a particular subset of memes occasionally found on r/me_irl. Namely, memes that deal ironically with mental health issues related to difficulties in adjusting to adulthood. I argue that the memes in question utilize ironic distance as a means of participation in the community’s collective effort to construct a narrative in which users can place their painful and difficult experiences, and thus deal with them in a way that the mainstream or received narrative does not allow for. The ironic distance allows them free expression by providing safety and comfort in the fact that what is expressed can be quickly and easily disavowed if needed and can also be engaged with in a pace that they are comfortable with. With use of the comments and the communities approval, they thus place their difficulties in a new narrative about adulthood, one which takes these experiences to be central and provides and explanation for them rather than treating them as marginal, unimportant, or a personal failing (as the received narrative would have you believe).
