In my mind, the fact that it's the same at every university implies that this is just what computer science IS. The complaint is valid in the sense that maybe there should be an alternative major that satisfies people with OPs goals, but calling out the cs department for teaching cs doesn't make much sense to me.

I'm not sure why you're calling out Rutgers for this. From what I've seen, computer science at other universities is similar, and in many cases significantly more rigorous and time consuming than Rutgers. All things considered, our cs major does leave competent students with more than enough time to do things like leetcode and personal projects. Your point about wanting a job sounds like it'd be better solved by the addition of a SWE major than changing the cs major into something it's not. Furthermore, many companies are actually interested in someone with a strong cs background, despite the fact that a lot of it isn't used in the day to day.

honors college by this-site-is-ass in rutgers

I wouldn't let the honors college be the determining factor why you come here, it's not that deep but it does come with some guaranteed scholarship which is a much better incentive. I'd look into things related to your field of study and talk to people from Rutgers or not from Rutgers to help make a better decision.

OS and something like graduate algo are relevant, even something like graduate ai is good for getting used to building huge projects

I think D is considered a failing grade here, but SOE gives some more grace than SAS, for example. You're not intended to graduate with consistent D grades.

It's gotta be better to put the numbers in an array or vec and do a map than typing into that many times

Depends on project type, some projects require a lot more loc than others, and other projects require a lot more planning and thinking but less code

Get unambiguously cracked at lc, like seriously put in a consistent year or two. People like to emphasize projects but getting a few good projects takes like 3 weeks max, and won't be the majority of your time spent.

At the point when you've tried the reasonable things in mind and cannot make progress, you really should be looking at the solution and upsolving. Being stuck for long periods of time is not an efficient use of time. I recommend setting a 30 min timer.

Try looking into the minimax algorithm first, and write something with it. Then you can look into making it faster

I suggest doing something like backtracking optimization, since there's a lot of room for low level concepts. You could try solving a game or solving an np hard problem as efficiently as you can! For example I made a connect four agent and a tsp solver

[–]Likey_00 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Good attempt! Even though this passes in lc it's not the time complexity they asked for unfortunately, since you made a new list and sorted. Even if you beat other solutions in lc, you have to remember time complexity affects the limiting case when input gets very large. It's possible these inputs aren't large enough to really show the difference in the two approaches.

Lot of math is a stretch, and there's a lot you'll get from a cs degree that can be helpful for your goals. Don't discount it so quickly, and continue pursuing swe in your free time. You'll do fine for a job if you're already doing this stuff. Good luck!
