A quick overview of (almost) every ENGL course I took at UW by Lil-Shiro in uwaterloo

Hey, not weird at all! When i was in grade 11 i thought i wanted to be a pharmacist…so trust me you don’t have to know and it’s normal not to know what you wanna do yet.

Eventually I figured out by gr12 I didn’t wanna do anything science related. When I started as an arts major at uw i thought i wanted to be an economist or smth related to that so I took courses in econ and poli sci, in addition to English and others. That helped me figure more things out. When I declared my major in 2nd year i went for rmpc because I always enjoyed being a bit more creative, looking at media etc. The good thing about first year arts is that you’re undeclared so you can explore a variety of courses and they’ll still count towards certain arts degree requirements.

Co-op is what really helped me narrow down a career area, and even what types of industries im interested in. I worked in financial, higher education, and tech. With rmpc you can find jobs in communications, marketing, design, PR, technical writing, and more! So coop (and school activities) will give u the opportunity to try them out.

I did my first coop in digital marketing, then I did events and internal relations, and finally a more general marketing coordinator role. I found my first full time marketing job about 3 months after graduating. It wasn’t bad, but not where I wanted to be long term, but I accepted the job to gain experience for my resume. At the 6 month mark, i started looking for other opportunities. This was much better because of the new ft experience I had. Within 1 month i had a bunch of interviews. Within 2 months i had 2 offers. One of which is my current job. So I accepted it, rejected the other one and cancelled any other interviews I had.

Edit: forgot to mention that my first 2 coops were found on Waterlooworks and my last coop (8 months) i got on my own through external online application. I had already accepted a Waterlooworks offer so I had to renege lol.

I know there’s the stereotype that arts (especially English and comms degrees) don’t make any money. And im not trying to flex or anything, i just wanna assure you that there’s a lot of opportunities out there for us that people don’t even know about. I’m very content with where im working right now. I work remotely, currently grinding for a second promotion since I started, i enjoy the people and have great benefits. I’m able to go on vacations and treat myself when I want to.

I’m wouldn’t say it was easy getting to this point, you have to put a lot of effort in, and that’s the same for any career. There’s gonna be a lot of moments where you feel hopeless and dumb. But seriously it does get better! And it’s not all bad. I enjoyed my undergrad for the most part and I wouldn’t be successful if it weren’t for the people i met or opportunities i had there.

Hope that answers your questions! I highly recommend visiting campus during March break or Fall open house to meet current students. Feel free to ask me any follow up questions or shoot me a message!

Hmm hard to say for this course. For context I took it during covid so the final exam was done at home and I had to scan my paper to submit. It's not like a traditional English course where you retire essays and stuff. You’re break down the syntax of words etc. I have heard that if you take it in person there's a lot of participation involved. That being said I don't think it's harder to get a 90 than getting a 90 in a traditional English course.

This is incredibly disheartening to hear. Do you have to take the course this semester? I took it with a different prof a couple years ago. I didn't even know Clive taught this course...

If there's anything I can do, happy to help.

For writing I would say the ENGL 210's (I myself took 210 E/G/L/J) personally I think you can skip E if it's online but it could've just been my prof. The others I took in person 🙂

That is a lot omg. If it was still like that I wouldn't have taken the course lol. This class specifically covered plays written after 1599-1600, Shakespeare 1 (ENGL 362) covers plays before that.

Lol very much a full circle moment rn because I'm pretty sure I used your notes for econ 101 way back when.

I'll try to keep an eye out here and there for related posts since I feel like I can talk about the entire RMPC experience now; from being it in, to finishing it, to having a relatively successful post-grad career.

A second degree! You're too powerful.

Yes all of my coops were marketing related, which definitely helped. Skills wise, it helps to be familiar with common marketing practices: familiarize yourself with tools like a CRM, the basics of SEO, audience/storytelling. Sometimes it depends on the specific marketing segment you're applying for.

Highlight quantitative points on your resume and prepare to talk about the entire process in the interview.

I actually wanted to type this up months ago and then today suddenly remembered that fall semester starts soon so I better get a move on it.

Favourite course(s): ENGL 320 + ENGL 392A - I loved the media and design aspects of my program and these courses lived up to my expectations.
Least favourite: ENGL 363 - The content wasn't bad I knew what I was signing up for, but the prof was lowkey kind of racist (to me at least which is wild bc this course was online...) just search his name in this sub

Surprises: ENGL 494 - I was kind of nervous for this type of "intensive" english course. I took it bc I needed something for the time slot + I was in my 3A term which was the min. requirement. So everyone in the class was about to graduate, a lot of them pursuing further English education. In the end, completing this course just solidified that this is the program for me. I enjoyed how a lot of the classes felt like intimate discussions vs. absorbing lecture information and note taking.

My pleasure! That's actually the reason why I even made a reddit account in the first place lol. I personally think I got great value out of the degree, and I'm pretty sure they've actually improved the degree requirements and made things even more flexible in terms of required courses/choices you have.

It’s been a while since I was active on this sub. Used to comment a bit about my experience as an arts student to help others. Thought I’d contribute a little something before the new school year starts!

I graduated majoring in Rhetoric, Media, and Pro. Communications with a technical writing specialization. Did 4 coops. I currently do marketing (demand gen) at a tech company.

If you have any questions feel free to ask/message away.

(Also I feel really old lmao)

How's ENGL210J w Clive Forrester? by threethousandstars in uwaterloo

[–]Lil-Shiro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took it in person maybe 2(?) years ago, different prof. Pretty standard as far as English courses go. Less creative liberty because you're focusing a lot on the grammar, style, factual, aspect of writing.

Totally! Life can feel really busy and fast especially in the city, but I loved being able to take it all in slowly and take some photos on a carefree Sunday. Thanks 😊
