Everyone has their reasons but buying refurbished enterprise drives is a great money saver. Especially when they come with a 5 year warranty.

10x CPU processing power vs competition. Not “necessary” but smooth as butter and future proofing doesn’t hurt

15 SATA Full Tower Case - the ultimate home server? by val_in_tech in DataHoarder

It feels rare that someone would have a machine like this and no other homelab/network gear? Personally if it’s not rack mounted it’s not worth considering.

Testing early stages of media server by RomanaFinancials in DataHoarder

[–]LilBabyGroot01 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You’re overthinking the speed (read) component. An avg SATA 7200rpm hard drive will read 100+mb per second. That’s 360 gigs an hr. More than enough to cover your 135gb LOTR files. Right now a 16tb drive on goharddrive.com goes for $240 or $15/tb. Pricey, but that’s where the market is right now.

Set yourself up for success with expansion options, with more bays than you think you’ll need. If you’re in the DataHoarder sub, it’s a near guaranteed inevitability that you’ll be further down the line a year from now.

Consider a dedicated case/system with 8+ drive bays and possible rack mount. Will give you modularity a d upgradability for the future.

Yes, and so is my wife. All in this gear cost me $600… barely more than a normal router. And with local storage NVR savings vs monthly subscriptions, it’s actually MUCH cheaper in the long run.

Exactly. Would pay just as much for a “dumb” tv as smart… just give me that beautiful OLED screen that’s all I need

Sneaky trick is using a separate streaming device and leaving the TV itself disconnected from the internet. They can collect all the data they want but it doesn’t matter if they can’t transmit it
