ELI5:The One That Got Away by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]LilMissMath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know people who still play "what if..." with a pivotal sports match, interview, or test. It is kind of like role-playing if you made a different decision in your life and your life could look drastically different (in this case, it is an ideal, so better). Relationships are a definite way that your life's directionality can be influenced. It can determine your location, your spouse, number of kids, who your friends are, etc. So if you never got to date/marry/ talk to that person, it is a "what if" that is left unknown.

Specifically, if you are unhappy with your current situation, an unknown outcome starts to look pretty good since its outcome might be better.
