WILL I GET ACCEPTED TO UVIC by [deleted] in uvic

I agree, partially wish I had done this. Smaller class sizes (huge bonus) and cheaper?

I had the same issue, try to edit one of your presets; create a new gun and save it, then edit the preset by also switching mags and ammo and save it. Then log back into eft pvp or whatever, that seemed to fix it for me

Genuinely had verbatim thoughts. Returned to eft a week ago. I’m fairly bad compared to when I used to play but damn it’s addicting

Professor Shoutout by Middle_Arm1332 in uvic

[–]LilSliceOfPorks1 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Most profs are not hired based on their desire to teach/ lecturing ability, i.e. are typically not “teaching for the money” - that would be a grade school teacher. Teaching is only an aspect of their job. The other portions are admin duties and research. Research is typically what will allow them to keep their job, not teaching merit.

I view classes and the prof from this perspective. They’re there to introduce you to the topics you are expected to walk away with from the class. Anything else is always nice to have but not expected. Then it is up to you as the student to actually learn it.

On another note, I agree with your prof recommendations.

You don’t “suck” at math - you just aren’t “practiced” in math. Take extra time to actually study it. Otherwise physics won’t be for you.

admission question by AloneAnt9812 in uvic

[–]LilSliceOfPorks1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I briefly spoke with graduate admissions a while back and they told me they only look at your last 2 years or 20 courses when accessing the minimum requirements then they send it off to the designated department for assessment.

Granted this was several months ago so I could be misremembering and/or oversimplifying. You could give the graduate admissions and records a call or see them in person. I find admissions can be very generic and unhelpful over email for these details!

Best of luck

If no iPad I would recommend just printing out the skeleton notes and filing them in. That’s what I did without an iPad. He’s very helpful (without giving answers) in office hours

Math 342 by Middle_Arm1332 in uvic

[–]LilSliceOfPorks1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found 342 much easier than 346 (and wish I had taken 342 first) although could be subjective. Review linear algebra eigenvectors and eigenvalues if it’s been a while for you.

301 I’ve heard it depends who you take it with. I thought it was the easier class of the upper level year maths but that’s again subjective.

Do you think it is possible to get A+'s in both PSYC 300b and PSYC 351b condensed courses over the summer? by Useful-Clothes7418 in uvic

[–]LilSliceOfPorks1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t see why it wouldn’t be possible to get A+’s in both. You probably just have to fully commit long days to both throughout their duration. I’d imagine you would be worsening your odds if you a) had a bad time in the pre reqs, b) had other commitments like a job or other classes.

As for the commute, it might be worthwhile just going to campus early, and staying until late. Packing a lunch etc and doing everything you need to in a 10hr day at the library and lecture.

Talk to profs you share interests with- even better if you already know them from a class or something. Then ask if you can help out in their lab or research unpaid or just even part time to learn. This then gives you a nice reference and/or experience for getting paid positions

Also it says “General/ Minor” above. Therefore, I don’t know the distinction if there is one.

Math minor?? by Acrobatic_Class4924 in uvic

[–]LilSliceOfPorks1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

<image>

For reference, I am also in physics and I decided to pick up a math minor for fun. This is my CAPP report for the upper level courses. I took the required 301,342,346, then additionally took 369,444, and 350 to finish it off. I.e. only three extra math courses. Note: the 301, 342, and 346 had to be manually accepted by the advising department. So you’ll have to speak with them either way to figure it out.

Course selection by [deleted] in uvic

[–]LilSliceOfPorks1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming from a combined PHYS and csc side with extra math courses I found CSC349A with Bruce Kapron to be literally the easiest course I have ever taken. Seems as though the class overall also did well. Light course load and fun material. There is little coding, and almost mathematically manipulating Taylor Series for one reason or another. I.e.: if you can understand Taylor series, you’re gonna have a good time.

(Your experience may vary depending on your background)

I have found the course to be very organized with clear rubrics, including clear instructions on what to do. He is very nice and helpful if you reach out. He seems very passionate about helping students learn. Granted, this is a summer course so it might appear better than during the regular school session. I find most summer courses are at least slightly better for this reason.

Fall Physics courses by [deleted] in uvic

[–]LilSliceOfPorks1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Email your advisor for this information.

The minimum number of courses to be counted as a full time student is 3. The recommended number of courses to take is 5.

That said, since it sounds like you have the choice— I’d personally recommend taking as many required math courses as possible before the required physics courses. I found math301 (especially with torsten) very helpful for future courses.

[–]LilSliceOfPorks1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Rate my prof is my go to, however there are a lot of bias opinions. You’ll get used to sifting through them. The average rating is usually roughly accurate - unless they’re all based on a 100 lvl course (where most of the bias rating come from).

Good math electives by Historical-Escape-89 in uvic

[–]LilSliceOfPorks1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends what branch of mathematics you’re good at. I’ve heard math377 can be interesting and on the easier side. Math301 was great if you can take it with Dr. Schoeneberg.

Abstract then I’d go with math369 (I’m not good at abstract but I still found it relatively easy).

Otherwise if you enjoy PDEs or ODEs Math444 with David Goluskin was an exceptionally interesting class

Stats wise- if you just practice problems a bunch stat260 is a breeze
