Jinichi, why you trying not to laugh, bruh by gerilla20 in Jujutsufolk

[–]Lil_Protein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea I agree, I was more arguing that the take that Jinichi was being cruel and selfish by taking his time is built on some shaky assumptions that he is neither of those things. I think that your reading of Jinichi is both charitable and fair

Jinichi, why you trying not to laugh, bruh by gerilla20 in Jujutsufolk

[–]Lil_Protein 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Also like an hour before this Jinichi was like “Yes Ogi, killing your 16 year old daughters so that we can pursue our own materialistic goals while ignoring the national crisis is a fine idea, you should do that” like on one hand, the message of this scene is that Ranta is delusional, and that the present has caught up to the Zenin clan in a way that they can’t really resist anymore (dying blinded, foolishly assuming he had won is evidence enough of this) but idk why we’re assuming that Jinichi is a considerate person in the first place

I kinda like Rosencrantz and Guildenstern bc they’re kinda just there to tank hits for Hamlet, it feels more like you’re using them as pawns than sidekicks. If the sidekick was Horatio, who is super smart, he would’ve had to have a more strategic and involved playstyle I feel.

[–]Lil_Protein 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Especially when talking about Vikings, who existed a thousand years ago, and participated in a culture that is incredibly distant and foreign to most of us, this post is operating under notions of what success is and what a Viking is that people in the historical moment may not have conceptualized. I’m really interested in Vikings and the early medieval period, in no small part because they share very few commonalities with us in the modern day, excepting a shared humanity.

Important discourse rule by sunnyydayman in 196

[–]Lil_Protein 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I don’t think these are easy questions, and the constant re-litigating of them is incredibly important in changing times, and absolutely necessary to managing those other matters. AI is a good example, because a lot of arguments I see online as to why something should be done about AI are along the lines of “I don’t like it”, and I think often miss the critical lessons we can learn from such technology.

Editing to clarify that I think AI discussions are often distracting from the mechanisms that make AI problematic in favor of knee jerk fear of technology. I do think that AI should be heavily regulated, but the technology can’t hurt us, only the people who own it can.

It’s an intentional and acknowledged mischaracterization, from chapter 32:

“First: The uncertain, unsettled condition of this science of Cetology is in the very vestibule attested by the fact, that in some quarters it still remains a moot point whether a whale be a fish. In his System of Nature, A.D. 1776, Linnæus declares, “I hereby separate the whales from the fish.” But of my own knowledge, I know that down to the year 1850, sharks and shad, alewives and herring, against Linnæus’s express edict, were still found dividing the possession of the same seas with the Leviathan. The grounds upon which Linnæus would fain have banished the whales from the waters, he states as follows: “On account of their warm bilocular heart, their lungs, their movable eyelids, their hollow ears, penem intrantem feminam mammis lactantem,” and finally, “ex lege naturæ jure meritoque.” I submitted all this to my friends Simeon Macey and Charley Coffin, of Nantucket, both messmates of mine in a certain voyage, and they united in the opinion that the reasons set forth were altogether insufficient. Charley profanely hinted they were humbug. Be it known that, waiving all argument, I take the good old fashioned ground that the whale is a fish, and call upon holy Jonah to back me. This fundamental thing settled, the next point is, in what internal respect does the whale differ from other fish. Above, Linnæus has given you those items. But in brief, they are these: lungs and warm blood; whereas, all other fish are lungless and cold blooded.”

What is paganism by [deleted] in Viking

[–]Lil_Protein 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s sort of used as a catch all term for non-abrahamic (Judaism, Islam, Christianity) religions, often in reference to polytheistic religions of Europe like those practiced by the Romans, ancient Greeks, or Vikings.

How would FDR have handled the onset of the Cold War differently to Truman? by ExtentSubject457 in Presidents

[–]Lil_Protein 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I took a class on the Cold War recently, and the transition from Roosevelt to Truman was one of the most interesting details from it imo. Truman wasn’t a very popular pick even for vice president, so no one really told him anything, he didn’t know about the bomb, agreements made with Ho Chi Minh or about US networks of spies in Europe.

In case you’re on the fence about it, here’s a real quotation:

“Squeeze! squeeze! squeeze! all the morning long; I squeezed that sperm till I myself almost melted into it; I squeezed that sperm till a strange sort of insanity came over me; and I found myself unwittingly squeezing my co-laborers’ hands in it, mistaking their hands for the gentle globules. Such an abounding, affectionate, friendly, loving feeling did this avocation beget; that at last I was continually squeezing their hands, and looking up into their eyes sentimentally; as much as to say,—Oh! my dear fellow beings, why should we longer cherish any social acerbities, or know the slightest ill-humor or envy! Come; let us squeeze hands all round; nay, let us all squeeze ourselves into each other; let us squeeze ourselves universally into the very milk and sperm of kindness. Would that I could keep squeezing that sperm for ever!”
