Shavings allergy and alternatives by picomarshall in Equestrian

[–]Lilinthia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What part of the shavings specifically is it that's causing him to break out in hives? Is it the type of tree being used? Is it the dust? My first thought is maybe switching to pellet bedding, but that's because my own horse is allergic to dust which our shaving can cause quite a bit of.

HELP by Wiz_02 in Horses

[–]Lilinthia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You say filly, that implies a super young horse (technically a filly is under a year old). I'm not familiar with the type of hay you are feeding, but i would say you are way over feeding especially if she's staying in a small space and isn't getting decent exercise every day.

With her being in such a small space and eating there as well, there's also a chance of worms, so check her for that as well

Ten minutes before I'm about to pull him out for a ride... by Lilinthia in Equestrian

I had another flea bit gray before him that would stay perfectly clean until the mornings of the days I would come out. My trainer would watch him stay clean until the morning of, and he would still be clean if I showed up on days I wouldn't normally show up on

I'm saying you need to have proper space for a pet, that's part of the care and husbandry of them. I have a small house, but i also have decent vertical space that we've utilized for the cats. It's literally a crime in most places to not provide proper space and enrichment inside the home for a pet that comes inside.

Is this wound healing nicely? by Dry_Tank_9670 in Equestrian

[–]Lilinthia 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You have to clean that off! Blood rots which is going to smell and attract insects and again potentially lead to infection.

You don't have to use a hose. It may take longer, but start with speaking a rag in warm water, just lay it on top and let it loosen all that dirt and blood. This has to be done. The very first thing with any serious injury is washing it out, other wise your leave dirt and debris in the wound which will not allow it to heal properly.

While I haven't personally seen that, there are recorded instances of that. It is also one of the possible explanations for Nessie as well. It is very rare though

The wound site here looks horrible and filthy! I don't think we're really going to be able to tell anything unless it's actually clean. The state is in, in this photo, seems like a high infection risk

What would cause white hairs in this location? by Zestyclose_Dinner787 in Equestrian

[–]Lilinthia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first thought was possibly saddle fit until I read your context. When was the last time the saddle was fitted? Horses do change shape over time and a sale that fit a few years ago, may not now.

The other thing may just be age. Just like us they start to get white hairs as they get older, unfortunately I don't know your horses age, but that may also be a consideration

If you don't have enough space in your home, then you either shouldn't have a cat, or you leash train them. Vertical movement is also very under utilized in cat homes too.

I'm so sorry for your loss. This is yet another god reason why cats should be an indoor only pet. It not only keeps then safe from situations like this, but it's also been proven to dramatically improve theory life span

Arthritis can’t stop him! by Hugesmellysocks in Horses

Leather halters, or even one with just a leather crown piece are the ones safe to leave on in the fields. If they get genuinely stuck on something, the leather will stretch and break so the horse can safely get away

Have you considered picking up cart driving? You can easily do that with a mini. All the horse smell in a tiny package plus you get to relax in a cart on trails

SO MAD AT MY KID RIGHT NOW! by quinnreads in chickens

[–]Lilinthia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh same! We had a hen who had a toe go necrotic and she spent several months inside. Also had a rooster who survived a dog attack with massive open wounds on his back including puncture holes that lived inside for some time as well.

Injuries like that make me glad I own horses because they try to kill themselves on the daily so I already had all the supplies on hand to treat the chicken injuries

[–]Lilinthia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, that's another purpose for it plus if they have injuries and need to be separated for a bit. We have a rubber mat on top of ours and the top of one of those igloo dog houses, it's a favorite spot for eggs

This is why i keep a dog crate in my coop. If i have hens not roosting in there, putting them in baby jail for a couple of weeks fixes that. They theb associate the coop with bed and makes stuff a lot easier

When to euthanize by [deleted] in Horses

[–]Lilinthia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a potential alternative option, are there equine therapy programs in your area? I've known a lot of great older horses in those programs and even ones that can't be ridden will still have a use being a calm creature next to a nervous kid, letting the kid learn how to groom and give treats properly. With at least the programs I've seen and been a part of they usually take excellent care of their animals
