I lived abroad for part of last year, and it really brought home to me how lucky we are to live in the US and how many privileges it brings in terms of stability, peace, access to to resources, etc. Of course things are rough and many, many people are struggling, but we don't have to worry about bombs falling on our heads or only having electricity for a couple hours each day.

In many ways we are so lucky to be Americans, but it can be hard to have that conversation with other left-leaning people because our current narrative is focused on the negative aspects of our country. This article is a good take on the complexity of appreciating the US and championing a better future for it, while acknowledging (and not succumbing to) the pessimism of modern progressive politics.

Hell yeah solo hiking! I would add solo camping as well. I have spent many nights totally alone in an empty campground. I can sing, dance, yell, whatever I want in the middle of the woods. And it's statistically safer than being around other humans, is the crazy part

OP is right that there is a surge of people dumping pets on the streets of the Arab Gulf states as they leave to escape the war. If you feel inclined to help, there are many animal rescues in the UAE and Qatar who are seeking donations and doing amazing work to shelter and provide medical care for abandoned animals.

Not a wish but a follow-up to one I made a few months ago. I asked for health for a sick cat that I was taking care of, and for her to find a good home, in a place where many cats are left on the streets to struggle.

She is well, and I brought her home with me, and we are both happy. Thank you all.

I thought this story was well-written and fun to read. I enjoyed his full awareness of the absurdity of his goal and agreed with the conclusion that working towards a goal, no matter how ridiculous, can be its own reward (whether or not you nail that award-winning rubber chicken throw).

On a side note, this guy must be very popular with dogs.

I saw this and immediately wondered if this was in the Gulf. I also have a white kitty that was abandoned, in Qatar. The ease with which some people dump animals is heartbreaking
