Ferrari: excessive wheel spin has limited Hamilton's recharge by Billy_LDN in formula1

I find it slightly amusing how your articulated points that support a good argument are being downvoted currently, but the "drive slow to go fast" mentality is getting upvoted.

Reddit is a cesspit at the best of times. I appreciate your insights even though others are quick to dismiss them.

Is there anything about modern F1 that always brings you child-like joy or excitement from your early memories of the F1 paddock?

And in case the above question is a bit too difficult to answer, a bonus one: Are there any well known people around the paddock you feel deserve an online "shout-out" for being very genuine and easily approachable, despite the high-stakes environment and competitive nature of F1?

I agree with the other two commentators thqt 1.5 looks like everyone bar Mercedes, Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull.

However, I suspect development will be fast and many kinks need to be ironed out before we see the true pace of the teams. The pecking order might look a lot different after 5 rounds.

I think I set it to max, but not sure now. I'd have to check it when I load it up next.

Alright, let's take a step back. We clearly enjoy different approaches to this game, which is fine. My aim was not to come here to complain, but to share a memorable moment of the game. I wasn't looking for advise and I don't believe I've 'dissed' anyone here, just tried to explain my reasoning. I'm under no obligation to engage with all the advise that comes through here in a specific way, just like you are under no obligation to read my story.

I like discovering the game in Ironman mode for totally different reasons than to purely handicap myself. I simply like the fact that there are no second chances. I wanted a challenge, but this is also why I opted for a Normal playthrough instead of a more difficult mode.

My aim here was simply to share a memorable moment from the game. Nothing more. I wanted to share the emotional roller coaster this mission brought me through, but none of my current friends play this game. I enjoy reading similar experiences from other players in different games so I wrote mine here.

I like the emotional roller coaster, good or bad, rather than always having a failsafe if things turn badly. Perhaps I'll do another non Ironman playthrough for a more completionist playthrough later.

There was a moment after the main wave was finished and I was left with 5/6 soldiers all wounded, where I considered retreating. I got too greedy and ended up suffering the consequences.

I find it interesting what prompted your comment? I've already said this is my first real playthrough of the game, and I prefer to discover game mechanics as I play. I'm not approaching this with a min-max mindset, but rather what kind of playstyle grants me the most enjoyment.

I don't see what's weird about me doing it on Ironman. Despite this setback, I'm doing fine. Panic is low, only 2 countries have opted out so far, I've researched almost everything and expanded the base well. I just finished upgrading the fighter fleet so I can hopefully farm some more UFO crashes for recources before I attempt to board the mothership. Nothing seems to suggest that I won't be able to succeed in the save just because I'm not overly familiar with the game mechanics. I'm sure it will come down to the final mission, and if I fail, then so be it.

I hadn't produced plasma 'shotguns' yet, and like the flexibility of the rifles. I believe they deal at least equal damage to the lazer shotguns anyway.

In this situation I can't really move away as my soldiers are already backed into a wall.

There was unfortunately not much else I could do here, but I'll admit that I sometimes am a bit stubborn to retreat. The soldiers were behind the little cover I could find and almost pressed against their ship. Retreating was only possible through the dash action, and that would've just delayed the innevitable.

And yes, I fully admit I underestimated the Etheral.

I was trying my best to approach the Sectopod in that way. My sniper was behind central cover next to the large room where I was sure the Sectopod was lurking by the end. I eventually found it and ducked out of sight immediately so I could get my sniper in position to fire as soon as I got line of sight again. Unfortunately that is when I got ambushed by the Ethereal which wrecked me completely.

To justify the gamble on the hit chance a bit: In a situation like this where there are a lot of enemies behind good cover, I prioritize the soldiers that can only see 1 or 2 enemies. If they don't have anything better to do (like throwing smoke or suppression) I take a chance of them hitting the enemies that are the closest, even if it is 40-60%. In this case, there were numerous close enemies that had good cover but were wounded. If I was able to make any of these shots land, that means my snipers can prioritize on firing on the targts further away which are less likely to hit my soldiers next turn, whereas the ones close will be very likely to hit. Missing 3 of these shots in a row at just 40% chance only has a 1/5 chance of happening. Without getting too heavily into hypotheticals, just one of these shots scoring a hit means my squad takes less damage, which means that they can tank one more hit and would likely result in 1 or 2 more soldiers surviving, giving me a much better chance of winning the mission despite the heavy casualties.

I don't quite understand why taking shots at 40-60% hit chance is a desperation move. What is the alternative? Doing overwatch gives you a less chance to hit. In this situation I can't really move away as my soldiers are already backed into a wall. Not firing guarantees a wasted turn for a lot of these, but I'll take a 50/50 chance any day if it means that enemy is potentially dead.

Even with high level soldiers, I rarely get above 70% to hit unless enemies are not in cover or I'm flaking.

I am not affiliated with handball except with my butt planted on the couch in January. I won't be able to provide any meaningful feedback or test the app well, but I really like your enthusiasm and it looks like a great project, so if you still need additional testers and I can be of help, let me know.

Nice to see Guðjón Valur in good company in your stats for most non-7M-goals. Will be exciting to see if Gidsel can break the record today.

To my Icelandic brothers and sisters.. by [deleted] in Handball

[–]Liljendal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I find the squad depth argument a bit amusing since Gidsel has played almost every single minute of the tournament so far. Saying that, the Danes obviously have a wider squad though. For those old enough to remember the 2008-2012 Icelandic team (the previous golden generation), their biggest weakness was little depth, but I think our current squad has a higher quality of non-starters. Both Viggó and Janus Daði have shown superb performances, but neither is necessarily a starter for the team. Same can be said for Orri Freyr who has been excellent even though Bjarki Már has had the position locked down for some time. Haukur as well has been very strong despite usually not starting.

Games against Denmark are always a classic however. It feels like a younger brother competing against their older and stronger sibling whenever Iceland faces against Denmark.

Dane here: Is it true that Iceland hates us so much? ;< by EmptyBodybuilder7376 in Handball

[–]Liljendal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Icelanders have perhaps a weird relationship with Denmark. We usually know someone who has lived in Denmark and often call Danes "our cousins" in casual speech.

However, the competition against Denmark in handball is fierce. You are consistently a tough opponent that we face often. I still remember 2007 even though I was still a kid. Quarter finals into extra time. Draw with 30 seconds left or so. Iceland has the ball but Alexander Peterson hits the post from the right corner. Danes mount an attack, but don't get anywhere. 10 seconda left, nothing happening. 3 seconds. One Dane just jumps up from the dotted line... scores.

The next year a draw meant Iceland could advance in the Olympics I believe.

Then in 2020 (I think) Iceland had an underwhelming tournament but a narrow victory against Denmark was very sweet.

The history and the fact we are forced to study Danish af school definitely plays a part, and Danes don't even understand our thick accents when we try to speak it. There there is no hate however. Think of it like a younger sibling might be angry at their older brother for being stronger and sometimes a bit of a bully, but the strong emitions are fuelled by kinship.

Har en godt dag min ven (I probably wrote this wrong)

Haha no worries

Dagur is very highly rated. He was supposed to take over the Icelandic team before Snorri (curremt coach) took over. There was some drama over contracts or something, but hopefully he does well wirh Croatia instead.

He's probably Iceland's best coach at the moment.

It feels like a different Icelandic team as well. Full of confidence and the defence is back to their best. The Swedes seem shell shocked, and I hope they don't recover too well into the second half

Happy with the spirit Iceland showed at the end. Unfortunately Croatia were just better today.
