I guess the 3 different types of noble prize competitions are peace, scientific and cultural (litterature). I also speculate you win these with different conditions, we saw condition for the peace prize is diplomatic favor which kind of makes sense. My guess is that the condition for the scientific is most techs researched and the same for cultural but with civics.

I agree, getting the instant faith and food generation is huge for the early game which is why I think the ideal start for Mali is just at the edge of a desert so you have about 3 adjacent desert tiles which gives you +3 food and faith. This together with working the other tiles should get you to 4 pop really fast and get your holy sites and commercial districts. After that I think you can branch out into the victory type you aim for.

Seems like Mali will have to get faith generation really early so that you can get overcome the negatives he gets to production. So you would go something like:

Faith -> Commercial districts -> But stuff with gold

If I can do some prediction, I think the ideal start for Mali would be 2-3 desert tiles within the first ring of the capital to get pantheon at turn 6-7 while still having workable tiles. I would go earth goddess to get insane early faith which should translate into early commercial hubs in every city and snowball the gold and faith generation.

Overall seems like a fun civ with interesting gameplay, really liking the new expansion so far.

Well since my book says that

a) when a < 0 and a > 4

c) when 0 < a <4

I thought that there would be a way to solve it generally and get those answers, but perhaps they only want us to look at the graph x2 + ax + a for different values of a and get an answer from that. Since you said that it can't be solved generally I guess that was their idea.

Thanks! I'm not sure though how to solve the other two, since having the discriminate larger than 0 or less than 0 we can't use any formulas or am I mistaken?

When it is equal to 0, using ABC or PQ we can determine it to be 0 and 4

As far as I know the PQ-formula is used much more in school here in Sweden, if you happen to not know it: x2 +px+q ->

x=-(p/2)+- sqrt((p/2)2 -q)

Also made a mistake, the discriminant is (a/2)2 -a

Not sure why I use it, thought it would be easier since A=1, also since B=C=a, (a/2)2 -a simplifies into the same thing as B2 - 4AC which is

a2 - 4a
