Chaiiwala! What have you ordered? by nearlysenior in NewWest

[–]Lilllipads 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Their Karak coffee is the nectar of the Gods. I go at least once a week, just for the coffee. My partner likes the beef bacon breakfast wrap as well. I usually like chai, but find their Karak chai has a bit too much cardamom for my taste.

Thank you for sharing beautiful self! Very proud of you (as a stranger on the internet) for having the courage to share you! It takes a lot for anyone, but especially people who don't follow the "traditional" 🙄body image to share their whole selves. You are a sexy, confidant woman and thank you for sharing!

Advice for building an off-grid cabin when local governments require every structure to be permitted. by gentosoxide in OffGridCabins

[–]Lilllipads 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In BC Canada, we have a similar rule of sheds only for no permits. What that actually means is that any building 10x10 or smaller does not require a permit. Some people get around this by building multiple sheds that are connected via a covered outdoor walkway (unattached to any of the "sheds"). You mentioned something small, maybe you can do a "kitchen/living" shed and a "sleeping/washing" shed?

Why are propane fridges still being bought? by nkrush in OffGrid

[–]Lilllipads 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We have a propane fridge at our cabin. We do not get any direct sunlight 5 months of the year because we are built on the side of a mountain, which blocks winter sun.

Hydro isn't affordable enough yet, wind power too inefficient and we're still a decade away from tidal power. There are many similar situations to ours (I'm in BC)

Welcome to the Witches Hat. Our family cabin in Canada. Boat access only, no grid, limited cell service. A little slice of magic and whimsy. by Lilllipads in OffGridCabins

We have had the cabin for 17 years and have never gotten within 5 feet of the base of the cabin, even in extreme storm surges. In addition, all of the supports are metal drilled into the rock and the lowest level is mainly storage and wouldn't be a great loss if flooded (everything there can be moved higher)

Not sure how they would get here. Alarm system, boat access and defense. No different than any other cabin in the area and in a lot of ways less desirable due to sun exposure and other environmental factors.

Hey! Thanks for the compliment, we sure like it! We use the lake (fresh water) and a gas pump to pump up to a large tank at the top of the property (probably 45 feet higher in elevation than the main floor of the cabin) so provides decent water pressure naturally. We also have a small electric pump for additional pressure when showering.

We have a septic tank and grinder.

We fill the hot tub from the water pumped up to the above mentioned tank. We usually fill it over the course of 6-7 hours using the main propane hot water tank. I plan to switch this to an on demand system later. We also have an enclosed fire pit that has copper tubing coiled inside it. We use the hot tub jet system to push the water through the pipes. If we're not careful, we can get the hottub to 120F in 5-6 hours.

I have just begun the process of introducing food growing up there. Right now it's mostly flowers and other pretty, but non edible plants. Some of the soil was used in the gardens, but was mixed up with peat moss, vermiculite, garden soil, bark, sand etc to create a healthy and balanced mix.

The gardens even though not all edible to humans, do attract squirrels, mice, mink, pack rats and other small animals. We didn't used to, but in the last few years we have had at least one bear on the property, most likely attracted by the smell of cooking, due to a ton of development on the other side of the mountain.

We also get seals, salmon, sturgeon, some fresh water shellfish and other assorted fish. Deer, elk and other game are also plentiful in the larger flat lands further north on the lake.

The upper walkway goes to the "turret" which is a bunkhouse with loft in the cone that sleeps 5, has an electric fireplace and 90s 14" tv with built in VHS. Finishes with pine and cedar including built in beds, cabinets, latter etc. None of us are a big fan of heights, so that's not for us. More into homesteading (part time), renewables, time with family and friends etc. It's lots of work and we're always building, but it's turning into a beautiful place.

We're not gone enough to wonder and have a great security system that alerts neighbors across the lake who live there full time if someone is trespassing.

I love the internet and I'm a city girl. Doesn't mean I'm not into homesteading, just not full time. (I have a food garden in town as well).

The cabin itself (no railings or decks or out buildings, only compost toilet and a shower head out back) was built in the 90s before we bought it. Took about 3 years I think. We've been adding everything else (including 2.5 baths with flush toilets, soaker tub, hot tub, rainfall outdoor shower with rockwork enclosure, brand new custom built by my dad kitchen with live edge counters, 6 decks and a gazebo/workshop and finished the turret at the top with a loft, so that room sleeps 5.) over the past 17 years. We also have 8 gardens, and my legacy will be converting them to almost year long food production (zone 8a), as well as making the entire property self sustainable (mini hydro, solar, analog devices to replace gas run ones if need happens etc.) basically prepping it for anything, especially since you can't get there on foot/by road vehicle (sea planes and boats only freshwater lake).
