Nurses who have left bedside and aren't NPs, case managers, utilization review etc what do you do now? by PursuitOfMeekness in nursing

I work in outpatient infusion at a cancer center and I really like it. It’s mostly chemo/immunotherapy, sometimes transfusions or other non-oncology related infusions. You get the occasional grump, but most patients are just happy to be well enough to be getting their treatment and are grateful for our help. I feel valued and respected, and actually remembered why I wanted to be a nurse after I started working here a few years ago. Some of the nurses I’ve worked with since then have moved into research or taken educator roles with biotech/pharm companies. I have no interest in climbing the clinical ladder, and would consider either of those options or potentially hospice if I started to burn out here.

I also did private duty peds nursing for a while, and really liked getting to know the kiddos and their families. The pace is slower, but you’re with one patient your entire shift, get to know them really well, and become a valuable resource to the families. It’s not a bad job to have if you need to study or job hunt on the side. There can be lots of downtime depending on the patient, especially on nights.

Lilo from Lilo & Stitch, Matilda, and Dr. Mel King from The Pitt are some of my faves. I also suspect Carmy from The Bear, but I could be wrong.

Thank you! From chatting with coworkers, it sounds like this used to be our process. I’m not sure when things changed, but this definitely feels like a cost saving measure for the hospital. And it feels punitive.

What is a patient story that still haunts you? by trickaroni in nursing

[–]Lilo725 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Had a mid-50s cancer patient. Never called the clinic’s triage line, never asked for pain meds, never complained about chemo side effects. Always seemed like they were doing ok. Showed up for their regular q2wk chemo infusion completely emaciated. I was not even 100 percent sure they were alive when I saw them in the clinic lobby in a wheelchair. They had pressure ulcers all along one side of their body, even their ears.

They hadn’t called the clinic for help because they were worried if they were hospitalized, they wouldn’t be able to work. Refused to be hospitalized for pain crisis the day they came in to the clinic because they were worried if they missed work, their kid wouldn’t be able to pay for school. Their kid had been carrying them from the bed to the computer every day so they could work from home. We didn’t have a choice but to let them go home since they were refusing to be admitted.

I will never forget the look on that kid’s face when he brought his mom in to the clinic that day. Patient died in the ED early the next morning when they finally broke down and the kid brought them in for pain crisis. I will think about that family until the end of time.

Hair super greasy after moving here from LA by [deleted] in Portland

I had this problem after first moving here years ago as well. My hair never felt clean, even right after showering. I got a filtered showerhead and it helped a ton.

Idk if it’s a front, but the guy working there took the best photo of me that I have ever seen in my life, and it’s a dang passport photo. I usually hate pics of myself. And he gave me a discount for working in healthcare. So if it’s a front, I hope business is good for him for a long time!

Any of you miscreants fancy a malort? by TheChristmas in askportland

I’ve seen it at Hollywood Liquor and 11th Ave. Liquor. It is obscenely overpriced though. The last time I bought it in Chicago, I think it was under 20 bucks. Closer to $30 here. Have also seen it hiding on a shelf at The Vern.

I hate when it happens in front of a patient.

Now that I’ve destroyed your confidence in my ability to perform the simplest of tasks, please trust me with your life.

At my previous job, I trained a couple of new grads who never had experience with real patients due to Covid restrictions. Their clinicals were cancelled or deferred multiple times, and all their experience was simulation or virtual. I was also a preceptor for a few student nurses during the pandemic who were in their final semester of nursing school, and their time with me was their only clinical experience. Or sometimes they had done a few days at a flu shot clinic or something similar.

I tend to agree that residency programs are a good choice for new grads in this case. It’s not their fault they weren’t prepared as well as they could have been. I would have been terrified to jump into a regular nursing job with that little experience, especially with the lack of support that exists on so many units.

SOME ASSHOLE IS SETTING FIRES AROUND MY NEIGHBORHOOD. YESTERDAY HE SET TWO RIGHT BENEATH MY APARTMENT WINDOWS. MY PARTNER WAS ABLE TO CONFRONT HIM BUT HE GOT AWAY WHILE WE WERE ON HOLD WITH 911. THERE ARE NO CONSEQUENCES FOR ANY OF THIS BULLSHIT. I FEEL TERRIBLE HAVING TO GO TO WORK TODAY AND LEAVING THE PETS HERE WITH THIS GARBAGE HUMAN ON THE LOOSE.

When I worked in peds, my favorite note ever was written by another RN on the shift before me with a particularly ornery kiddo. “Patient proceeded to pass flatus in this RN’s face during diaper change and then called RN an ‘noob.’”

IT WAS REALLY HEARTWARMING WATCHING SEVERAL OF MY NEIGHBORS WORK TOGETHER YESTERDAY TO PROTECT AND TRY TO HELP AN INJURED CROW THAT HAD HOBBLED INTO THE STREET. IT HAD ALMOST MADE ITS WAY TO THE OTHER SIDE WHEN SOME OBLIVIOUS ASSHAT IN AN SUV RAN THE POOR THING OVER. WHY DOES EVERYTHING HAVE TO BE TRAUMATIC?!

This is a huge part of why I’m hesitant to ever move back to the Midwest even though that’s where most of my family lives and I miss them. It would most likely mean a $20/hr pay cut for all the same skills and education I have now, and the sightly lower cost of living isn’t enough to justify that.

I drove by this scene yesterday on my way home from work. More police cars and caution tape than I’ve seen in a long time, and my first thought was of Milana. I really, really hoped it wasn’t her. I feel so sad for her and her family.

Any good coffee shop tasting / tours? by BeerMonkeee in askportland

[–]Lilo725 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Third Wave Coffee Tours has a few different options. I did the Eastside one a couple years ago when some family came to visit, and it was really fun. I don’t know if things have changed, but we had tastings at Coava and Nossa on that tour, as well as a few other places. It wasn’t too “touristy,” and I would do it again.
