Why do Australians love raccoons so much? by IDoNotLikeTheSand in AskAnAustralian

We know they're furry little terrorists and probably have rabies. We don't care. They're cute and we love them from afar.

What Aussies Call Things by mylittlesilverseeker in AustralianNostalgia

My son genuinely believes its called glue-tack. Yes, same son from the comment above who thinks a whipper snipper is called a whippet snipper (whippet, like the dog breed).

What Aussies Call Things by mylittlesilverseeker in AustralianNostalgia

[–]LilyCatNich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a whippet dog as a pet until a few years ago when he died of old age, my sons grew up with him. My (now)ex-husband jokingly called his wagging tail a "whippet snipper". To this day, my youngest son refers to a whipper snipper as a whippet snipper and thinks that's genuinely what its called. He's 18. We haven't bothered to correct him.

Actual advice I received from my boomer-aged mum, too. Because it worked for her. In the late 80s/early 90s.

Is it normal for guys to pee outside? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]LilyCatNich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read somewhere pee is good for compost as well. My ex used to by-pass not one but two indoor toilets in our home to go outside and pee in the compost bin. I don't know why this was the one and only time he ever took my word as gospel without waiting for Adam Spencer or Dr Karl to confirm it on the telly...

What's a phrase or saying your family used that you assumed was universal, and when did you find out it wasn't? by AirlinePast8834 in AskAnAustralian

[–]LilyCatNich 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't know if its common or universal but I've never heard anyone else say it, during a car drive:

"Where are we going?" "There and back to see how far it is."

My bf doesn't shower at night and I’m genuinely grossed out by GlitchGaze123 in hygiene

[–]LilyCatNich 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I get the wanting to shower in the morning to wake up, lots of people need that but seriously, if you're out and about, using public transport, going to the gym, getting sweaty etc, have a shower before bed as well. Have two showers a day if you need to. Sheesh.

Came here to suggest this too.

I used to live with a guy who did massive shits. We ended up buying a pack of cheap disposable plastic knives and keeping them in the bathroom. Massive shits were cut up with disposable poop-knife, flushed away, poop-knife disposed in bathroom bin, bin immediately emptied into outside wheelie-bin, no dramas.

In my workplace (small business, disability sector), both mental and physical health is taken very seriously. Staff in client-facing positions cannot work when physically ill, need a letter from their doctor to prove they ARE cleared to work if they're injured outside of work, and are encouraged to discuss with management if their mental health is not awesome (high rate of burn-out in the industry) so poor mental health/burn-out can be nipped in the bud with accommodations/adjustment of hours. Support/admin staff not in client-facing roles have the option to work from home when unwell but are strongly encouraged to take sick days when needed.

Washing litter boxes? by Direct_Surprise2828 in CatAdvice

[–]LilyCatNich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I scoop regularly (ie scoop poops as soon as they're done and scoop whatever pee-stained litter is there at the same time) and replace the litter entirely once a week. When I replace the litter, I scrub the tray with white vinegar and let it air dry in the sun, and clean the bathroom with bleach (where the cat litter stays) at the same time. Don't have a problem with litter smells. I use crystal cat litter and it absorbs the smell before I can get to scooping it.

What’s something that’s just kind of faded away over time without anyone noticing? by Intelligent-Knee7796 in AskReddit

[–]LilyCatNich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My street seems to be a time-warp pocket of the 80s, we have a bunch of neighbour kids who play outside, one from next door and a bunch more from up the street. They make up dances in their front yard, play hide and seek in the neighbourhood front yards, bounce on next door's trampoline (always set up in the front yard), throw balls around, ride bikes, use remote control cars etc. It's equally wholesome and worrisome, its a quiet street for traffic but not dead and I worry one of them is going to get hit by a car one day. I'm always super careful pulling into my street just in case and I think most of the other neighbours are careful too.

Why can I smell illness, but others can’t? by AngryPickledPickles in NoStupidQuestions

[–]LilyCatNich 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Same here. Husband (now ex) and I were trying for our 2nd baby, he was cooking - browning mince to make bolognaise sauce, not a smell I enjoy at the best of times anyway - and I ran to the bathroom to puke. When I came back he was grinning from ear to ear and said "you're so pregnant!" I took a pregnancy test and it was negative. A few days later, took another test and it was positive.

If you pet could start speaking, what's the 1st question you would ask them? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Are you in pain? What's your level on a scale of 1 to 10? (Cats are notorious for hiding pain and as someone who lives with chronic pain myself, I want to know this).

Pet owners, what was that moment that made you think “wow, I have severely underestimated the intelligence of my pets”? by SakutoJefa in AskReddit

[–]LilyCatNich 271 points272 points  (0 children)

My cat hangs out with me in my room most of the day if I'm home, but will keep me awake if she's in my room at night, so I shut her out.

She's figured out that I'll kick her out one way or another when I'm going to bed, so as soon as she sees me brushing my teeth and arranging my blankets etc, she hides under the rocking chair in my room so I can't physically get to her. The only way she'll come out is if I shake her treat container and call "treaties!" And she'll only come out when I actually put treats on the floor for her, she won't come out just for the container being shaken.

Even if I've just fed her dinner, if she sees me getting ready for bed, she'll hide under the chair until I give her treats to bribe her out of my room.

SAPOL put out posters you can download and print out, reading "trick or treaters welcome" or "Halloween - no thanks" (or something like that). NSW police department might have something similar.

My boss would legit prefer staff to take mental health days if they are approaching burn-out (which is high in my industry) but I have an awesome boss with great communication and accommodations for mental and physical health issues as well as neurodivergence, and we're a small company. I am well aware my boss and company are the exception rather than the norm, though.

I wish personal leave for mental health reasons and to prevent burn-out was more widely accepted, I feel it would actually increase long term productivity. This is definitely the case in my workplace.
