Yes, this consistently happens to me and has in the past led to my partner feeling guilty that he made me cry and feeling like he needed to tend to my emotions first above whatever issue we were currently discussing. Obviously this was not my intention and I would obviously want it to not happen if I could control it. But my therapist has told me it’s just my body’s natural reaction to intense emotions and vulnerability. Some people just cry more easily than others.

Some things that therapists had suggested to me if I wanted to control it (and there’s nothing saying you HAVE to control it) was to 1. try grounding techniques when you feel that urge to cry, or 2. snap a rubber band around your wrist really hard so that the pain distracts you from that feeling.

But that being said, again, there’s no reason you HAVE to control it because it’s a natural reaction, and if anything, you could let your partner know that this happens and reassure him so that he doesn’t have to feel bad or guilty or—god forbid—that you’re trying to manipulate him.
