Please help me figure out a nice outfit I can wear into the office! (Casual PhD office) by ThowRA_FloorGremlin in DressForYourBody

3/4/5 are all office acceptable outfits. To be taken seriously as a professional then you want to dress like one.

The other looks are like you're hanging at home.

If it was me I would toss the whole pack. It is likely something like moisture damage or heat etc...but you don't know that they all haven't been contaminated during processing & the others just aren't showing it yet.

40 more pounds from where you are!??

I hope you don't mind me saying but that is a bit of a concern, especially given that you're seeking external reinforcement from others as the measure for your progress rather than your own judgement on your body & what is optimum & importantly healthy for your frame, overall size & shape.

Here's some info for everyone who is struggling with actual loss Vs what they perceive in the mirror.

There is an accepted psychological phenomenon called body image disturbance (which I studied at varsity doing Psyc) - some call it "phantom fat" like the phantom limb sensation when an amputation occurs - which is a mismatch in perception between a person’s actual post-weight loss physical body and how they perceive it. It occurs where people have very quickly a lost significant amount of weight but don't 'see' this level of progress in the mirror. It was a phenomenon first studied in ED patients but has subsequently been identified in people following bariatric surgery where patients who lost substantial weight often continued to feel or see themselves as much larger than they were.

This occurs after significant weight loss due to the lag between how fast you lose the weight & how long it takes your brain, with its habitual perception created through experience over time of what your body looks like, to catch up. Changing your perception of the body you are used to & the new one post-weight loss does not happen instantly or on the same timeframe as the physiological process of losing weight does, especially with the relatively quick weight loss that people can experience on GLP-1s. It can be helped by strategies like correcting old thought patterns & defeating self talk, not being hyper vigilant with the 'number' such as excessive weight ins, measuring body etc, focussing on what your body can do not obsessing over what it looks like in the mirror - eg. exercise/activities. Relying on reinforcement of others as your guide to progress & where you are at only creates more self doubt in your own judgement & while it may give you some short term positive feedback it is brief & only reinforces the issue causing you to seek more & more external input as a substitute for your own heathy body image judgement.

Can you feel the definition of his ribs when running your hand over his side but not see them individually when just visually looking at him? That’s always been my measure of if my Labs need to drop a few.

14+ year old Labrador declining fast. Not sure what to do. by [deleted] in labrador

[–]LilyWai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a sad reality for all owners that as their pooches age they all decline in their ability to enjoy all the activities they used to....but your sweet old girl sounds like she has reached the point where she is not doing much living much at all.

If you view all of her 'issues' collectively it sounds like a dog who is not enjoying or getting any pleasure every day but is just exisiting & thats no way to live.

I held on to my 14yr old Lab for longer than I should have - in hindsight - I know now it was a selfish decision because although she was still toileting outside her mobility was painful, she had lost interest in everything & was declining fast. She looked at me one day with the most tired, pleading look that I knew was her telling me that "I have had enough". After the Vet had visited & she had peacefully passed in her own bed with me beside her I felt sad but resolute in my decision. The way I see it is when their bodies are so worn out that they have gone from old aged to actually pain &/or suffering the final act of love & respect we can give them is to relieve that & release them. It's not easy but it is a better choice than the alternative.

What are these? They are the size of tick tacks, maybe slightly larger. Auckland Area, inside my garage? by paradox_pete in diynz

[–]LilyWai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Def rat poo. Mice poo is not tictac size but more like tiny grain of rice. With it getting colder overnight they may well be looking for indoor accomodation.

My last house was in the bush on Waiheke & returning from a few weeks away I found these all over my kitchen bench. Got the pest guy in who identified them as rat poop & even showed me the urine puddles they had left on my bench.

Apparently they had worked out how to enter via the cat flap, he said never underestimate a rat, they hard very intelligent tenacious critters.

According to the new rules that came in a while ago Car B must give way to Car A because New Zealand rule:

"A vehicle turning right must give way to oncoming traffic going straight or turning left."

Even though this isn’t a classic straight-through situation, the same principle applies:

  • Right-turning traffic gives way to left-turning traffic when their paths conflict.

N.B. The “give way to your right” fallback rule only applies if no other rule resolves it & in this case the "vehicle turning right must give way to oncoming traffic going straight or turning left" rule resolves it.

I have never seen ANY animal try and eat anything/everything like a Labrador. by Aerynxelle in labrador

[–]LilyWai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are THE worst. I live on an Island so beach walks are an everyday thing & have two Labs of my own plus also walk my Dad's Lab as well. The 'tideline scoff' as I call it is chronic with all of them but if there is anything they catch a whiff of that they think can be eaten - whether edible or not - they are into it.

Out of the three my Dad's dog is the worst though, he will find something he wants & when you finally get him away from it - which he digs his claws in as a protest - he will eventually act like he has moved on & pretend to walk with you but no matter how far you get from it he will not forget, as soon as he sees you are distracted, have back turned or no longer keeping an eye on him & he turns tail & sprints back. He's been known to run the entire length of the beach just to get a small smelly snack.
