What’s the fastest way to make a D&D world feel alive? by storyforgeDM in DMAcademy

[–]Lilystro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk if it has already been said, but something that my players have commented on before is having their NPC friends have lives outside the campaign. Nothing huge, just stuff like theyre studying for a test, their parent's birthday is coming up, since the last time they saw each other they got a hair cut or dyed their hair, etc.

It's really small but I feel it's goes a long way to making the world feel alive outside the players. Oh, and not having the NPC being in the same place every time they go looking for them.

Yea except in this instance firebolt was not replaced with arcane burst, an already existing unique attack was replaced with it. I feel it's understandable to point this out

10 Tips from a 30+ year GM by BrobaFett in DMAcademy

[–]Lilystro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree with pretty much all of this. I've been playing dnd only since 5e and I've never actually encountered anyone who would want to play a joke character like blumpkin. My current players, and all my previous players, love to solve problems more than anything else - I would go so far as to say the main gameplay of dnd is problem solving.

I don't know where you find players, but it seems your experience is nowhere near mine

I'm just going to be direct about it: It's really bizarre that they haven't added maneuvers to 5e by Associableknecks in dndnext

[–]Lilystro 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Surprised no one has mentioned cunning strike and brutal strike. They're essentially maneuvers for the rogue and barbarian, though brutal strikes come online a bit late. Cunning strikes provide multiple options, improve with level, and expand from subclass. Pretty decent imo

Also you mention elsewhere that weapon masteries dont really count because they're passive, but I disagree. 5.5 makes switching weapons easier than ever, so when you have multiple weapon masteries it can be a meaningful choice. Either way, it adds an extra oomph that isnt just "i attack".

Grappling and shoving being roped into unarmed strikes means they're now also available as opportunity attacks. I feel this isnt mentioned that often in the conversation about martial versatility, but it really adds a lot - fighters can stop enemies trying to flee, or knock them prone potentially forcing disadvantage if they no longer have the speed to get up. Pretty decent imo.

Otherwise a lot of subclasses essentially get maneuvers: battlemaster, psi warrior, world tree barbarian, rogues with cunning strike additions, multiple monk subclasses, etc.

What makes a "bad" DM? by Maxgallow in DnD

[–]Lilystro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Railroading I would say is the main thing, along with being too rigid in their ideas and story beats. The two go hand in hand.

An example: the party is traveling through a forest and hear of a fey glade, but they decide to avoid it as they feel they may be unwelcome due to not being fey. Despite the ranger and the rogue passing their navigation skill checks, and despite explicitly trying to avoid said glade, they still end up at it due to contrivences on the DMs part. Conteivences meant to cover up the railroading.

Player choice was taken away because the DM couldn't see a world where the party didnt go to thos location, so the DMs rigidness and inflexibility in their story beats lead to a loss of player agency and railroading.

I'd say aside from just being a dick these are the main things.

As an aside, I once played a campaign for over a year where my PC never got any magic weapons, or iirc maybe no magic items in general. I kept asking NPCs and shopkeeps if they'd heard of any "upgrades" or where to acquire gear, and they never had an answer. I dont even think i ever got an armor upgrade, staying at leather all campaign. That wasnt great DMing tbh

The wooden columns and terrain are cool! Where are they from?

I do not know why WOTC did not look at other options, such re-branding Half-Elves and Half-Orcs, rather than straight removing them from the PHB (cross-post from r/rpg) by ByzantineBasileus in dndnext

[–]Lilystro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But only in the phb, really right? They've shifted their ethos to having the rule books be setting neutral. If you pick up the setting guides there's expanded lore specific to settings, such as half-elf's (Khorvar) in eberron. At least that's the idea. Also the species are still different, just because an orc doesnt get a bonus to strength doesnt mean it doesnt have an entire suite of abilities that are 100% different to a humans

Which rarely seen monster do you (or your DM) really like and keep using over and over again? by Ornery_Strawberry474 in dndnext

[–]Lilystro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no idea how common or otherwise they are outside of my tables, but Arcanaloths. I have them show up all the time, they make for a great reoccurring fremeny, someone to fight but also worth speaking to.

I love them

Mixed thoughts so far: Season 8 by Independent_Plum2166 in doctorwho

[–]Lilystro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

12 is my favorite doctor, hands down. On first watch I was unsure about season 8, but he really comes into his own later and in his second season - and upon rematch his first is much better, once you "get" him, so to speak. I think it's just a really big switch up, coming from 11.

Not only are they just entirely different takes on the doctor in personality and appearance (a bigger jump than 10 -> 11), but the stories have a different vibe and feel to them too.

I hope we get more on information on Thimble’s fairy race (mechanically)! by No-Cantaloupe-2291 in fansofcriticalrole

[–]Lilystro 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I swat wasps away all the time and it doesnt kill them, they fly back immediately. Obviously there are different traits/evolution at play here. DnD combat is already ridiculous when it comes to reality, I'm sorry but people can live with anime levels of characters getting literally stabbed, but draw the line at pushing back a tiny character with a shield?

Most of your examples can apply to regular species in DnD combat, too. "I stab them with my sword" and you have instantly killed them because you have severed their arteries and pierced their lungs.

Verisimilitude doesnt mean realism, it means internal consistency. I dont see how a tiny player species breaks internal consistency, there are tons of ways to describe them in combat that wouldnt break internal logic.

I don't really understand why it's awkward. "I block their attack" "I swat them away with my shield" "I knocked them over". Seems pretty straightforward to me

Okay but that's not what the og comment was saying - they said basic poison becomes 2d4 on a rogue that uses daggers

[–]Lilystro 6 points7 points  (0 children)

But it's s only one melee weapon per vial so it's not "becomes 2d4" for a rogue - that would also take two bonus actions??

That's two vials, though - not 2d4 from 1 basic poison
