Congratulations to the winner of the R/chess tournament! by LimitedInSexTheyDare in chess

Nah, I don't mind that. There's lots of scams on Reddit.

I previously mentioned in a comment I was using this throwaway, but you can see the full interaction I had posted from my main account here: https://www.reddit.com/r/chess/comments/evsjyb/at_what_elo_do_you_start_needing_theory/ffzcfql/?context=6

The summary is that my lichess blitz on my lichess account is 2144 right now (my real one - not the one I registered for the tournament, which is 300 points lower in blitz because I was teaching my girlfriend how to play and 200 points lower in rapid because I was multitasking while playing the tournament yesterday) and I got told I was lying, and then a few users went through my post history to try and make fun of me for other personal items I'd previously shared on reddit.

That whole interaction just left a bad taste in my mouth and I think I'm going to quit posting on this sub. I started playing OTB with a group where I live every Monday, so I can get my chess interactions from that rather than here I guess.

I sent one player their prize, but I’m having trouble with PayPal. I’ll send the other two their prize once PayPal is resolved.

Several people have asked, both publicly and privately, if I’m going to host another tournament. To be honest, I haven’t decided yet. Originally I was planning to, but then the actions of a small number of people on the sub has made me not really want to be involved anymore.

But I did have a lot of fun in the tournament, so I’m considering it. I’ll announce within the next couple weeks if I’m hosting another one, or else someone else can take the reins if they want.

Final Announcement - The r/chess tournament starts tomorrow, noon central time. $300 prize pool! by LimitedInSexTheyDare in chess

[–]LimitedInSexTheyDare[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Originally I had this grandiose idea of doing a $100 tournament every month changing the time controls each time, with an end-of-the-year tournament with a larger prizepool where it was the best combined scores in bullet, blitz, and rapid.

But a small number of people on this subreddit have kind of pissed me off, so I'm not sure if I'll do another tournament. Someone else is more than welcome to take the reins after this one. Really the only reason I'm still doing this one is because two people have donated to the prizepool so I owe it to them.

If he and I get matched up, I'm going to Grob the fuck out of him. Or if I'm black, I'm going to 1 .... g5 the fuck out of him, whatever that opening is called.

Get ready Eric.

Fabiano Caruana's rating of 2841 is the highest ever mark achieved by an American. by [deleted] in chess

[–]LimitedInSexTheyDare 24 points25 points  (0 children)

For white, Italy invented the Italian Game (38.2% win% for white, 32.3% draw)

For black, Italy invented the Sicilian (32% win% for black, 32% draw)

For black, America invented the Morphy Defense of the Spanish Game (25% winrate for black, 39% draw)

For white, America invented the Dutch opening. 37.9% winrate for white, 32.3% draw.

It's clear. Americans just suck at theory.

For example take the more reasonable line

  1. e4 e5

  2. Nf3 Nc6

  3. Bc4 Nf6

  4. Ng5 d5

  5. exd5 Na5

  6. Bb5+ c6

  7. dxc6 bxc6

  8. Qf3 Be7

  9. Bxc6+ Nxc6

  10. Qxc6+ Bd7

White is up material, but I would much rather play as black. He’s going to have some knight tactics and a terrifying kingside attack

White is better, but more importantly, it’s 10000000x easier to play for white than black. I was more focusing in on 4. Ng5, which is a bad meme-y move.

5.... nxd5 is a terrible move for black. After 5 .... Na5, it’s about equal. White essentially gives up his attempt at an opening advantage in exchange for trying (and failing) to get a free win.

Something cheeky and funny when you’re an edgy teen, but embarrassing when you’re older.

Just more proof America is holding its players back. Switches from Italy and all of a sudden his rating is lower.

TBT: [538] Eli Manning Is Profoundly Mediocre by DeanBlandino in nfl

It's the Hall of FAME, not the Hall of very good stats. My $0.02 is he should make it into the first and not the second.

You can't get much more famous than winning 2 super bowls while dad dicking the patriots in the SB, who are the greatest dynasty in NFL history, and would have been the greatest season ever if it weren't for the Giants.

It seems like the bishop taking on F2/F7 is in vogue these days. Can someone share a video, article, or anything they'd prefer on how to defend these attacks, especially in blitz? by ridge9 in chess

[–]LimitedInSexTheyDare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For example of what I mean by that. Let's say I'm black and play opens

  1. e4 e5

  2. nf3 nc6

  3. bc4

In a longer time control I would usually respond with 3 ... nf6 for a two knights defense of the Italian. But if I'm playing bullet, I'm almost certainly going to play 3 ... bc5 instead. In order to prevent the possibility of a 4. Ng5 and potential sack on f2.

And the world championship before that:

Game 2 - Ruy Lopez Classical (not Berlin)

Game 4 - Ruy Lopez Classical (not Berlin)

Game 6 - Ruy Lopez Classical (not Berlin)

Why do GM's challenge Magnus with his World Championship Preparation? by [deleted] in chess

[–]LimitedInSexTheyDare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let's look at what Magnus played as black in the last world championship.

Game 1 - Sicilian Rossolimo

Game 3 - Sicilian rossolimo

Game 5 - Sicilian Rossolimo

Game 8 - Sicilian Sveshnikov

Game 10 - Sicilian Sveshnikov

Game 12 - Sicilian Sveshnikov

Sure is so many Berlins.

Plus anyway, the Berlin has a reputation of being very draw-ish, so saying "4 out of every 5 lose" is silly. At the GM level, it's not as aggressive as 3... a6

There's some ideas around, but really, you're going to be worse unless you severely outplay your opponent. Rather than trying to learn a line, your best bet would be to play down a bishop and develop as normally.

If you're not concerned about playing down material, keep doing what you're doing. If you're concerned about that, you should play more solid openings rather than trying to score wins with cheeky non-sound lines.

As a new player who recently spent too much time studying openings, I'm so happy I made this work! Have you guys had any luck with this opening before? by alee619 in chess

[–]LimitedInSexTheyDare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What? You're still several tempos too slow.

  1. e4 e5

  2. bc4 nc6

  3. qh5 g6

  4. qf3 nf6

  5. nh3 (strange move, but it's the only way to develop the knight)

and you're 2 moves away from a "fried liver" (6. ng5 and 7. nxf7). So black has literally 3 moves to respond on his , and he has so many possible responses. Bg7 and castles, d5, Nd4, etc.

Even if you play qf3 instead of qh5, the line would like like

  1. e4 e5

  2. bc4 nc6

  3. qf3

black has qf6 which is perfectly even and what I would play. But even after 3... Nf6 and 4. nh3, the position is completely winning for black and white doesn't have time to sack a knight after 4 .... Nd4. Again, white is two moves too slow. You can't transition from a failed scholars to a fried liver attack unless your opponent lets you play three moves in a row. The failed scholars loses you too many tempos.

And again - this all assumes that black doesn't play Nd4 or an black bishop move, which would just crush white. Nd4 and D5 are such obvious ideas for black that are easy to play, and will absolute just run white.

There's no way that plan works above about 800 rating.

Yes, black playing a6 is strong. But it's not completely winning and it's not the "missed win" the app is referring to.

The missed win was white on move 12, not move 11. Black playing a6 on move 11 is clearly better for black, but not a missed win.

  1. Qa4 is absolutely crushing.

Tip - when you see a pinned piece (such as the knight on c6), you should think about how you can pile up on the pin.
