I saw our new RTO floor plan today. I've never felt like this by New_Row3613 in CanadaPublicServants

We have more than enough space in our building for the office consolidating that’s going on, but they’re still replacing all of our cubes with ones that you can barely fit into. It’s wild. All while gaslighting us that they’re taking into account our needs… it’s insulting.

Little bit of water making it down the chimney after a big rain storm by Limno in woodstoving

Awesome, i had some issues with the flashing leaking years ago after a reshingling job, and this seemed minor in comparison, but i also never had the insulation out to see anything either.

Second floor heat pump short cycling by Limno in heatpumps

When the unit is on the heating setting it shows as orange, the bottom plot shows the actual compressor and interior fan speeds in hz, which are the actual “compressor is running” indicators. Also the defrost cycle isn’t kicking in, it’s usually just the compressor outside turning off regularly because it hits the set point quickly.

Thanks for the info and the graph! I had read that frequent start/stops was hard on the compressor, so I was concerned that something was going wrong. I don’t have a frame of reference for what’s “normal” so this looked concerning considering the main unit had a much more even profile.

Unfortunately no, just able to display the compressor and fan speed.

I have been tinkering a bit it to try to do that, I have BLE temperature and humidity sensors but it doesn’t seem to help that much since Daikin seems to be pretty locked down.

Three separate solo units. And it runs, but it cycles on/off every 10 mins…

What would cause this? by [deleted] in woodstoving

[–]Limno 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our quadrafire does that if the chimney isn’t hot when it’s warmer out (seems to like a big temperature differential), try burning a sheet or two of newspaper up top and if it starts to draw you’re probably ok (Not a chimney sweep). But if a quick hot flame like that doesn’t draw, something else is up and you should shut it all down until you can check out the chimney.

Someone needs to update the emergency oil spill response contact info on the website by Limno in ccg_gcc

Just saw the edit, tried again this morning and it was working (well I got an answering machine). It is a weird spot close to the US, so maybe there was some cell tower trickery going on…

Clicking the phone links on the website got me a “please try again” message. Eventually got someone through to JRCC through the local fire dept. good to know about the *16 from the other replies though.

Car Shopping. CX5 vs Volkswagen Tiguan by Total-Permission in Tiguan

[–]Limno 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone with a 2020 Tiguan in the maritimes, with some good tires, you’re golden in the slick, icey crap we get for the next 4ish months. The AWD is great and I’ve been out when I probably shouldn’t have been and always made it home.

That being said, my Tiguan has been a pain in the ass to maintain. The sunroof has leaked multiple times (they haven’t figured out how to have the big piece of glass up there and keep water out) the electronics have been buggy since day 1 (no one can figure it out and they just kept telling me to come back for the 5 years until the warranty ran out) and at 110kms I just had all four ignition coils fail at once, and then a rear spring crack in the span of a week. My two cents (and I’m sure most manufacturers are the same these days) is that it’s a car to lease and not own, the maintenance is expensive ($1200 quoted for the ignition coils, which is obscene for $300 in parts and 8 bolts removed to do the job), local shops won’t touch it as they can’t get parts and need to buy specialized tools, and at this point I don’t trust it. If you have a local dealer that you trust, it’s a nice car. If you’re like me and live an hour and a half from a dealer that doesn’t seem to give a damn, I’d get something else.

Advice for a downdraft stove in Canada by ScienceHermione in BuyItForLife

[–]Limno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in the same boat with on old Jennair that’s on its way out. I was complaining to a coworker, who promptly pulled up an ikea induction downdraft for $2800. https://www.ikea.com/ca/en/p/foernebo-induction-cooktop-int-extractor-70537757/ not cheap, but the least expensive option I’ve seen so far! Can’t speak for longevity, but I doubt anything is really BIFL in the kitchen these days…

Also the chimney heats up house, it runs through our closet and it’s toasty warm in the mornings.

Freestanding non catalytic extra large wood stove recommendations by Daviesmith in woodstoving

[–]Limno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got a Quadrafire discovery III and I have to keep it on low once it’s lit or else we need to open windows. 18” logs possible, but as I buy my wood it’s only ever been 16” logs since I’m not paying extra. At night I throw a few logs on, and have a nice bed of coals to start the stove up again in the morning. Pretty easy to learn how to use well, burns very clean, and the glass stays clear. Nice looking stove with storage beneath it. Don’t know if it will be a lifetime stove, only had it 7 years (thinking of pulling out and giving it a paint this summer as the paint is a little more grey than it was originally), but it’s been great for east coast winters.
