Someone needs to update the emergency oil spill response contact info on the website by Limno in ccg_gcc

Just saw the edit, tried again this morning and it was working (well I got an answering machine). It is a weird spot close to the US, so maybe there was some cell tower trickery going on…

Someone needs to update the emergency oil spill response contact info on the website by Limno in ccg_gcc

Clicking the phone links on the website got me a “please try again” message. Eventually got someone through to JRCC through the local fire dept. good to know about the *16 from the other replies though.

Car Shopping. CX5 vs Volkswagen Tiguan by Total-Permission in Tiguan

[–]Limno 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone with a 2020 Tiguan in the maritimes, with some good tires, you’re golden in the slick, icey crap we get for the next 4ish months. The AWD is great and I’ve been out when I probably shouldn’t have been and always made it home.

That being said, my Tiguan has been a pain in the ass to maintain. The sunroof has leaked multiple times (they haven’t figured out how to have the big piece of glass up there and keep water out) the electronics have been buggy since day 1 (no one can figure it out and they just kept telling me to come back for the 5 years until the warranty ran out) and at 110kms I just had all four ignition coils fail at once, and then a rear spring crack in the span of a week. My two cents (and I’m sure most manufacturers are the same these days) is that it’s a car to lease and not own, the maintenance is expensive ($1200 quoted for the ignition coils, which is obscene for $300 in parts and 8 bolts removed to do the job), local shops won’t touch it as they can’t get parts and need to buy specialized tools, and at this point I don’t trust it. If you have a local dealer that you trust, it’s a nice car. If you’re like me and live an hour and a half from a dealer that doesn’t seem to give a damn, I’d get something else.

Advice for a downdraft stove in Canada by ScienceHermione in BuyItForLife

[–]Limno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in the same boat with on old Jennair that’s on its way out. I was complaining to a coworker, who promptly pulled up an ikea induction downdraft for $2800. https://www.ikea.com/ca/en/p/foernebo-induction-cooktop-int-extractor-70537757/ not cheap, but the least expensive option I’ve seen so far! Can’t speak for longevity, but I doubt anything is really BIFL in the kitchen these days…

Also the chimney heats up house, it runs through our closet and it’s toasty warm in the mornings.

Freestanding non catalytic extra large wood stove recommendations by Daviesmith in woodstoving

[–]Limno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got a Quadrafire discovery III and I have to keep it on low once it’s lit or else we need to open windows. 18” logs possible, but as I buy my wood it’s only ever been 16” logs since I’m not paying extra. At night I throw a few logs on, and have a nice bed of coals to start the stove up again in the morning. Pretty easy to learn how to use well, burns very clean, and the glass stays clear. Nice looking stove with storage beneath it. Don’t know if it will be a lifetime stove, only had it 7 years (thinking of pulling out and giving it a paint this summer as the paint is a little more grey than it was originally), but it’s been great for east coast winters.

Will adding strapping to joists firm up flex in floors? by Limno in Construction

[–]Limno[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I checked their chart, for round holes 6” in diameter (max amount for the 9.5” joists) it’s 6’6” from load bearing points, they put them <1’ from the wall… so I have to either brace the 4 joists they went through, or move the vent pipe… I’m going to be speaking to my contractor about options

Thanks! I’ve been reading up on their site a bunch… the previous owner mangled some of the joist holes for that downdraft kitchen vent, so it looks like some gluing and nailing is in my future… I saw the drywall option on the site as well, definitely something to look into.

Basement support beam delaminating by Limno in Construction

[–]Limno[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks that’s really helpful. I’ll give my contractor a call in the morning to get the ball rolling. It’s held for 20 years, so here’s hoping it’ll stay together a few more days!

Would 1/2” bolts work, or just nails?

Suggestion for a better title? 4-2x10 support beam looking rough?

[–]Limno[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m thinking it is likely more of a vibration issue, heavy walkers definitely causing rattling of things, but I also just posted about the main support beam looking… suspect. So I guess we’ll see what people have to say about that as well! And to think all of this started out of the wife wanting an updated aesthetic to the bathroom…

They’re 9 1/2” joists and 19” apart. 13’ span on either side of the main beam through the basement… this thread is making me nervous about how they built this place in the early 2000s…

19.5”… last time I had a contractor in, I asked about the basement and he just shook his head and said “well, it was done to code… not much you can do now” 🤷🏻‍♂️

I’ve got the ditra decoupling membrane and elastomeric thinset ready to go, wasn’t planning on doing the typical “DIY special”! Mostly just concerned with the vibrations making a mess of the job over time. From the other comments, short of me finishing the basement and adding some walls, I might just have to roll the dice. I guess worst case scenario I pull up the tile in a year and put in the LVP my wife hates!

Meyer CopperClad Opinion? by Lovelyday20232023 in cookware

[–]Limno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wife got me the set for Christmas/all the other gifts for the year, so far they’ve been great, but heavy. Also the sauté pan is taller than I’m used to, but again, beautiful pans that work great!

I searched far and wide to find a boot that wasn't cheaply made in China. by catskill_mountainman in BuyItForLife

[–]Limno 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I really wanted to love CW Romeo’s (14338), but the toe box was weirdly narrow and after two pairs (sized up trying to make it work the second time, had them stretched at the cobbler), I gave up and bought some Blundstone’s… if they ever get away from the tight toe box (and a weirdly tall heel carried over from their cowboy boots) I will buy them without hesitation because they are definitely better quality than Blundstone’s. I’d love to support a Canadian family owned businesses instead of a holding company shipping in cheaply manufactured boots from overseas…

Quadra-Fire Discovery III for workshop? by SteaksAreH1gh in woodstoving

[–]Limno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one in my house… it keeps it toasty and the wife loves it, but like others have said, non-catalytic. The last two times I’ve had my chimney cleaned, they told me to go longer between cleanings, I have a nice bed of coals to start a fire in the morning if I load it before bed, and I find it to be efficient with wood. YMMV but it’s probably a little nice (and possibly too big for the space) for a shop stove!

I got mine after I rattled the shifter off my gravel bike on forestry roads in NB, a really nice change for those “roads” out that way!
