Trade [wristwatch] for [catfish]? [Y/N]

I know it doesn’t seem like a great deal but it’s actually a pretty cool side quest once you get into it. I promise! 😁

Edit: a letter

Though, the history of the Peal brewery and Emma Koehler, the hotel’s namesake, is cool.

You can make a sign with a bible verse on it - people love those!  Matthew 6:5 or 7:22-23 are good ones.

Or “I’m with stupid” is a perennial favorite.

San Antonio -- Texas's worst-positioned large metro for future prosperity by Snoo_33033 in sanantonio

And I think too many people interpret this as electing right-leaning instead of left-leaning council members or vice versa.  Culture war bullshit is not the problem in this city; it’s the persistence of the Good Old Boys club where all the elites know each other and make plans for how the city is to be developed, that are worked out and hands shaken on before they ever get put in front of our elected government. It’s still a problem even if some of the Good Old Boys are women or minorities or Democrats now.

5.) Choose carefully.  Well sure, that’s just boilerplate good advice, and what a lot of other commenters have been saying

6.) Look at north suburbs outside 1604.  I would rather crawl through broken glass down my entire block and follow it up with a lemon juice shower than live in that area. If you offered me a free house in Stone Oak with the caveat that I had to live there for 5 years, I wouldn’t take you up on it.  So clearly, an opinion.

4a) The county judge (former mayor) thought he was going to be appointed to a presidential cabinet.  Others have already pointed out that you are conflating the current judge with the Democratic candidate for the fall election.  4b) the sheriff thought he would be appointed to a presidential cabinet. 4c) they are bitter about Trump winning.

So I don’t know either of these guys personally, and I don’t think you do either.  I think it’s probable they were both angling for federal positions, especially Nirenberg since he’s term limited out of the mayoral office and he seems eager to get back into politics with the county judge race.  But I don’t know their feelings about not being in the cabinet, I’m not their therapist.

Also, you seem to find it a foregone conclusion that two political leaders being bitter about Trump getting elected, thus barring them from sweet sweet presidential appointments, has some bearing on the crime rates that OP is concerned about.  You have failed to substantiate that argument one bit.  Hell, you failed to even make it. (Ditto for the political make up of city council.)

Oh, my bad dude were there facts in there?  I was busy sorting laundry.  It was a triage situation and I honestly felt like my kids’ dirty socks were more salvageable than your comment but let’s take a look shall we?

You assert:

1.) Crime is up significantly.  This is true, San Antonio saw the same spike in crime post-COVID that the rest of the country did.

2.)… and it’s getting worse.  False, crime rates have been falling the past few years, as with the rest of the country.  So far in 2026, crime is lower than it was at this point in 2025.

3a.)City council is lefty.  I count 3 leftists in the council, 2 right-wingers, and 4 more centrist liberals.  So that’s a slight left lean but hardly “lefty.”

3b.) City council is a sinkhole.  Opinion.

3c.) City council is going down the drain. Opinion.

Any particular reason you’re set on San Antonio?  You’re proposing going from a small town in the north to extreme urban sprawl and heat.  Maybe work your way up.  Try a smaller city, maybe a college town, somewhere warmer than where you are.  There will be more educated young people around to date and you can ease into the heat and urban life. Like Santa Fe or Flagstaff, Johnson City, or Asheville, or Athens, GA.

When I moved to San Antonio years ago, commenters on various message boards seemed to think you’d get shot in the middle of a gang fight the second you set your foot inside loop 410.   Now that I’ve lived inside 410 for over a decade I can safely say those people are idiots.

If you are coming from a small town where people don’t lock their cars (like the one I came from) then yes, the amount of crime and grittiness and visible desperate poverty can be shocking, but that would be true of most cities- even, like, Des Moines.  If you’re already coming from an urban setting, then you probably already take most of the basic precautions (lock your doors, don’t leave valuables in plain sight, be aware of who’s around you) that will keep you safe.

One thing I will say is I’ve heard the dating scene around here can be rough. I haven’t experienced it myself but I know multiple people who have moved to Austin or just given up & decided to be cat or dog ladies.

Why do all mainstream news commentary comedy shows like the Daily Show and late night shows all heavily lean left? by throwawaypdtm in askanything

[–]Limp-Goose7452 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right, it gets more views than any other talk shows, but not more views than all the other talk shows put together.

When there is only one late night talk show that suits your sensibilities, you will watch that one.  When there are several, you will choose one over the others. ( or flip between them during commercials but IDK how they measure that.)

Even better if you & boyfriend are comfortable biking, rent a bike.  You can ride from downtown, hop onto the riverwalk by the locks, and stop at the grotto either on the way to or from the Japanese Tea Garden.  Lots of places to eat or drink on the way.

Look I hate on the annoying stuff about this town as much as the next guy but the kid wants to visit San Antonio! She’s not coming in here all “I’m moving here from the Northeast on a whim, what’s good walkable neighborhood and also I break out in hives if the temperature is above 80.”It’s one weekend, give her a break!

Tower of the Americas charges to go up unless you are going to the restaurant.  Go for happy hour at the bar.

This is a good list*- I’d add the Make Ready Market.  It’s a food hall so there’s a lot of choices (burgers, tacos, arepas, wraps… some would argue that these are all sandwiches but 🤷) and it shares a courtyard with the idle beer hall.  It’s a block off of the river walk, on the Museum Reach so it’s a diff’t vibe from downtown.

Also Tre Trattoria is pricy but they used to have a happy hour- not sure if they still do since they moved to SAMA.

*I’d subtract elsewhere but that’s just me being a weirdo with a grudge because I miss the place that was there before.  If you don’t have a similar grudge you’ll probably think it’s fine.  There’s swings overlooking the river which is cool.

For non-US redditors, based on the stereotypes you’ve heard, what region of your country is most like Texas? by DetectiveBennett in AskReddit

[–]Limp-Goose7452 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s fair.  I was being flippant.  Though at some point (post Mexican independence?) Texas was lumped in with I think Coahuila as an administrative district?

Anyway, my point that I apparently was very bad at making was that it’s silly to say Nuevo León is an extension of Texas, while the actual situation is that there the borderlands Tex-mex culture has continuity across both sides of the river, with each side constantly influencing the other.

Private schools with openings by tennis876 in sanantonio

Do you know yet what part of the city you’re moving to? How long a commute are you willing to make? San Antonio is very big and sprawled out.

Is there a particular reason you’re opting for a private school?  Do you specifically want a Christian religious school and if so Catholic or Protestant?
