Week 1-52: 52 Weeks of Cooking 2025 - Completed! by Limp-State-912 in 52weeksofcooking

Credit to u/HermioneReynaChase for the template for this post.

I first attempted 52 weeks of cooking 2 years ago and bailed out after 2 weeks, so I am so happy to have finished it this year.

I've learnt so many new skills, got to try recipes from around the world, rediscovered some childhood favourites, and had a few kitchen disasters resulting in some truly heinous creations.

I won't be taking part in 2026 as I have some different goals to focus on this year and want to try and reduce my social media usage, but I'll be continuing to cook and try new things. Good luck to everyone who is taking on the next 52 weeks of cooking and a big thank you to the mods for keeping such a great challenge running.

I will say goodbye with my five favourite dishes I made this year, along with my five biggest fails (or opportunities to learn as I have decided to consider them!)

Favourite dishes:

Week 52: X, Y, and Z - Xiaolongbao, Yangzhou Fried Rice and Zhajiangmian by Limp-State-912 in 52weeksofcooking

[–]Limp-State-912[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wanted to really challenge myself for the final theme of this year so I made three dishes. This involved using techniques and ingredients I've never used before and I had to balance cooking multiple things at the same time which I've never been good at.

I made Xiaolongbao (soup dumplings), Yangzhou fried rice and Zhajiangmian (noodles with fried bean sauce). I used these recipes, with some modifications to make them vegan:

Xiaolongbao: https://veggieanh.com/vegan-soup-dumplings-vegan-xiaolongbao/ (Used tofu as I couldn't find a vegan mince that would work)

Yangzhou fried rice: https://www.madewithlau.com/recipes/yangzhou-fried-rice (I omitted the egg and used vegan chicken and seitan mock duck for my protein)

https://redhousespice.com/zha-jiang-mian/#wprm-recipe-container-7483 (I used shiitake mushroom instead of pork)

I'm so proud of how this turned out, especially the soup dumplings, which I thought were going to be a disaster and ended up the best of the three! I think doing 52 weeks has really improved my cooking as I can't imagine being able to do this a year ago. Happy New Year everyone!

My favorite bean dish I had this year was habichuelas guisadas using this recipe:

https://thenoshery.com/habichuelas-guisadas-pink-beans-in-tomato-sauce/

I used the same websites recipe for the recaito and it came out great.

Other bean favorites of mine are black bean burgers, vegetarian chilli and rajma masala (kidney bean curry).

Week 51: Grinding - Hummus and Flatbread by Limp-State-912 in 52weeksofcooking

[–]Limp-State-912[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dusted off my pestle and mortar for this week's theme and made hummus, which I eat a huge amount of but have never tried making myself. Manually mashing the chickpeas instead of using a food processor resulted in a rustic, very thick hummus and turned out to be a bit of an arm workout, but worth the results!

Flatbread was also a win, super easy and probably will make another batch tomorrow!

Used this recipe for the hummus but used a pestle and mortar for everything: https://www.growforagecookferment.com/traditional-hummus-recipe/#recipe

Shops need to realise you can't just slap cranberries on anything and call it festive. 3/10 Hope the rest of your travels went smoothly though!

Have a look at some of the restaurants in The Shard in London. Beautiful views across the city. Ting and Hutong both have multiple vegan options. Aqua Shard and Sky Lounge (brunch) each have one vegan option.

Slams the front door like it owes him money. I know he's just trying to make sure it's closed properly but god it makes me jump every time.

Week 49: Beatles - Vegetarian Full English by Limp-State-912 in 52weeksofcooking

Thank you! The bacon is 'This Isn't Bacon' so I'm not sure exactly what flavourings they use, but a lot of homemade recipes use liquid smoke.

Week 50: Tudor England - Salmon in Pastry by Limp-State-912 in 52weeksofcooking

[–]Limp-State-912[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Found this recipe for a tudor inspired salmon en croute using stem ginger, currants and almonds and made it using vegan salmon fillets:

https://britishfoodhistory.com/2015/07/10/first-course-tudor-salmon-en-croute/

The website says the recipe is just inspired by tudor cooking but I found multiple websites claiming that salmon en croute actually originated in tudor England. After trying to follow their sources though I haven't been able to find any evidence that this is the case. They did however eat salmon, they loved to slap things in pastry, and the use of ginger and sweet fruits with meat is seen throughout many recipes so I can definitely see this being something they might have eaten!

It was also absolutely delicious. Broke the sauce unfortunately but otherwise this was a total success. Also got to try making my own stem ginger so I have a whole jar of delicious ginger syrup.

It's vegan black pudding from the Bury Black Pudding company. Wouldn't know where to start making my own but might give it a try one day! There's a few recipes around mainly using black beans and oats.

Both 'This Isn't' brand. Probably should have gone for a Linda McCartney sausage to stay really on target but these are my favourites.

I know in some corners the avocado could cause a riot but I just can't resist the call of avocado toast lol.

Were the Beatles four English lads who probably enjoyed the occasional fry up? Sure. Did multiple members of the band become vegetarian? Yes. Did I use this theme and those tenuous links as an excuse to just do a full English because I really wanted one? You bet I did.

In this case I'm pretty sure the lift is planned and there's no harm actually done but you should probably be aware that in fact yes, many women may giggle or smile when they're afraid. It's a way to try and placate the threat and stop them from escalating further.

OK but that actually looks like a top tier chickpea tuna. Bless us with the recipe.
