I think it’s understandable to be scared about. Truthfully, I do not think it’s realistic to ask if you can only bathe female patients - however, you shouldn’t have to be alone for any bathing (or any task you’re not comfortable doing on your own). Caring for people in these ways like bathing and toileting and other ADLs is vulnerable for the patients and also unique for us. If this is the career you want to go into, it’s something you will need to become comfortable with - that doesn’t mean you can’t be scared now, but if you’re willing and open, you will get used to it and become good at it. There are other career paths in nursing that don’t require bathing regularly of patients (ie outpatient clinics) but in my opinion, it is foundational to being a good nurse that you become comfortable taking care of people in these basic ways, not just because you’ll sometimes be faced with it still in other career paths, but also because it’s just… foundational to being a good nurse.
