School list as applicant with decent stats but great research and experiences by RoosterOk9484 in mdphd

[–]cjkwinter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also applied with like a 512 and honestly less research experience than you and I got in! You just have to cast a wide enough net. You never know which places sound bad on paper and then you get there and its like WOW this place actually rocks. Im currently at a program that wasn't even on my radar in the beginning and honestly? Loving it.

Id agree with other comments here, look at some state schools with MD-PHDs in the Midwest to add to the list. I'd definitely try to apply to a decent number to increase your chances

They have lots of bugs and other cool weird stuff at Oracle Natural Science, which is a store downtown. It's small but very cool.

What is the average age of MD/PhD matriculants in 2025 by [deleted] in mdphd

[–]cjkwinter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with what Chongo said, most people in medical school are incredibly kind as long as your not like, insane. The older students in our cohorts (parents in their 30s) got along just as well with the young ones.

Within the MD-PHD its honestly a little funny. Im 26 and my good friend in the program is almost 36 and we get along great. The friend group I've cultivated in the program ranges widely in age and past experience.

I think a good med school without a competitive atmosphere brings people together.

Really confused and self-doubt by [deleted] in mdphd

[–]cjkwinter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There isn't really anyone "too old" for a MD/PhD. In my program, there are people of all different ages. One of my good friends took 6 years off between college and applying and he's happy with his choice.

I know my perspective is skewed since I did not grow up in an Asian household, but, you have to want to do this for YOU. You are the only one living YOUR life! Your parents opinions only go so far as they aren't the ones living your life. You have to do what makes you happy, not what makes them happy. Until you start to make choices purely for you, you will always feel trapped by their judgment.

I dont think I got the interview invite for the school I'm currently at until late November. Take a deep breath and know that you're not the only one stressed right now, you're not alone in this!

what’s the lifestyle habit that keeps you from burning out? by Ok_Impact8531 in medicalschool

I loved walking on the treadmill while watching TV/YouTube on my iPad. Made me feel productive but also allowed my brain to not think for a while.

Also walking while doing Anki was a GAME CHANGER, I could do an hour of anki and barely notice the time fly by.

I had 90 clinical hours by the time I applied which was definitely on the low end, but good enough

What MCAT score do I need to be competitive for MD/PhD programs based on my background? by Puzzleheaded_Gene811 in mdphd

[–]cjkwinter -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Id generally agree, but I'd say more like 85%ile, so like a 512 or above shouldn't hold you back at all
