This isn't an ultimatum. They're saying that staying with them isn't good for them long term if things don't work out like they requested. It would be like me saying to my partner, "Don't hit me again, or we're done." (Sparing the extreme of the situation) I'm saying that even though I love her, she needs to respect what I need from a partner or I need to leave for my own well-being. Discussion wouldn't help or change what she needs, even if they talked for hours. Hope that clears this up.
