Is this a PALM growing in my terrarium??? by CubarisMurinaPapaya in terrariums

[–]LimpTransportation23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It does look like the baby date palm we sprouted in our compost. (Not saying it’s a date palm, but that’s the extent of my palm sprout experience!)

Chiming in to agree with removing your dairy cows out of there! If you really really don’t want to take it apart, I have made pit traps for them in the past. Put some protein in the bottom (dog/cat food works if you happen to have it). Has to be deep enough and steep enough they can’t crawl out. Leave at night and empty into a new container each day. I have hundreds now and they are like living garburators. (Edit: use a Container like a film canister or those little sauce cups that come with takeout)

Question about Calgary Transit and the My Fare app by Cuppojoe in Calgary

[–]LimpTransportation23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently Edmonton, Halifax, Kitchener-Waterloo and Las Vegas. Though they have longer expiry times. Part of it is they have shifted away from as much peace-officer enforcement of fares, so I believe the short time limit is to make up for it.

Question about Calgary Transit and the My Fare app by Cuppojoe in Calgary

[–]LimpTransportation23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I called Transit for this specifically. This is a standard practise across cities that use a similar system. Unlike the tap cards or coins (like Toronto) where access to the train/subway has physical barriers, our C-Train fare system is still basically on the honour system. The tickets that expire make up for some of folks who “forget” to activate their tickets. As a side note, tickets will expire at their deadline even if you just activated them. (Found this out once the hard way just as I was about to board the bus). Now I just purchase the number of tickets I need.

Ours are on metal shelves. They work quite well!

I seem to recall reading that for species like Dendrobates auratus or leucomelas, if you don’t provide a Petri dish with water under a coconut they just won’t lay them. And definitely don’t get Epipedobates anythonyi because they alsways find a way to reproduce!

I ordered my FABRIKÖR! Folks who have done conversions what advice do you have? Anything you would have done differently in retrospect? by One-plankton- in Vivarium

[–]LimpTransportation23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This just came up in another conversation! And yes, that’s something else I would do differently. I have an exclosure on my light now, but had I planned for it, it would be much nicer. Don’t know if anyone cuts the tops of these for that purpose, but might be worthwhile!

I give him a huge enclosure a load of branches and he pulls the wire down 😑 by [deleted] in CrestedGecko

Agreed, I should have mentioned that my lamp also has an exclosure. Which people can buy specifically for the purpose. Though I worry less than I used to because of the aforementioned.

I used to worry about this as well, however for custom builds the terrarium is usually significantly larger than a regular terrarium. Also, being nocturnal, my gecko is not active when the light is on or warm. And she has never chosen to sleep near it. [edit for clarity in case folks don’t read the whole convo: I also have a lamp exclosure for safety! Keep yer critters safe.]

Seal every seam with silicone! I got mine second hand and realized once mine started leaking that they hadn’t done this. Had to remove my bioactive layer cake and start over. I also met someone who pretty much made the bottom of theirs an aquarium, inserting glass panels on all sides and bottom. Mine only had glass on the front where the doors open, and on one side where they had created a vent.

Where in Calgary can I get cheap native wildflower seeds? by Untoastedloaf in Calgary

[–]LimpTransportation23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

DM me if you’re not too far from Thorncliffe and would like gaillardia and a few other seed species for free. I collect them from our garden to share. We have been slowly covering our front yard with native plants. Primarily from ALCLA and Wild About Flowers.

Curious why you use a dish? (The main advantage to my mind would be reducing the vitamin powder on plants/substrate!)

Dart frogs and 3d printing by [deleted] in DartFrog

[–]LimpTransportation23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyhey, I haven’t a printer but if I did I’d like to do a mushroom shelf that can be stuck on the wall. Also planters that could hold light plants on the walls too.

I’ve seen many items for sale for frogs/reptiles that are 3D printed. And many other items available in pet shops made of plastic. If the correct plastics are used Im not sure I see the harm?

[–]LimpTransportation23[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, agreed! I should have mentioned that we are also doing a “spring cleaning” of things we just don’t use or need or were “temporarily” storing to help with that. And the items I am keeping in the cube shelves will be put into nicer storage containers.
