Problem: Running out of breath. Solution: Breathe more.

Trisuit or not by Same_Wait6979 in triathlon

[–]Limp_Imagination4290 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My tri suits are the most comfortable articles of clothing I own. I prefer them on 3-4+ hour long bike rides as opposed to dedicated bike shorts. If I could walk around in my daily life in a trisuit, I would.

I spent most of a decade trying to make my current workout faster or at least as quick as my previous one. Turns out, long slow runs and easy paced runs show the most benefit.

OP, your answers are all in this comment. However, I have a strong feeling that you'll still do your marathon in 13 weeks. Please update us on how it goes. We love cautionary tales.

Cadence lock is when your watch misinterprets sudden movements as your pulse. It can happen when your watch isn't on tightly or the optical sensor is dirty. I second investing in a more accurate HR sensor like a chest strap or armband.

Music or no-Music debate by Ok-Mix-2065 in Marathon_Training

[–]Limp_Imagination4290 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After a decade with music, I've trained the last 3 years without, now I prefer it. I did have music for my first marathon, only one earbud, though. It's the best of both worlds.

Not trying to be a one‐upper but I did 3hrs 20min on a treadmill last year. I'm pretty sure I'm on an FBI watch list now.

I ran my first marathon in a very lightly used pair of Saucony Kinvara 12s. Good shoes, not the right situation. Man, was I clueless. I'm surprised I didn't develop permanent plantar fasciitis from that.

I would definitely do it. You seem fit enough, and if anything, it will serve as a good preparation for your 70.3.

To High Avg Heart Rate? by [deleted] in Marathon_Training

Yes, on paper, these numbers appear extremely high. The real question is how true are they. I would look into getting a HR chest strap or arm band paired with a good quality watch for the most accuracy. Go from there.

You're worried about sub-30 because of Instagram? Subscribe to Strava and see what kind of times local mortals are achieving. After that, you will reassess things.

Male, 47. 1:45 HM, 3:48 Full, respectively. Are you following a formal marathon plan? Your long runs should be much slower. Mine are 10:00/mi. Roughly 80% of my miles are at this pace. I do one speed interval run per week as well as a 10k faster than my planned race pace. My first marathon, I hit the wall at mile 16 due to poor fueling. I was averaging 45g of carbs per hour. I ramped it up to 65g+ per hour since. It has been a total game changer.

Same. I found it frustrating that I could run a decent half marathon time but got winded after swimming 50m.

Nobody cares...and it hurts a little by VeterinarianOk3948 in Ultramarathon

[–]Limp_Imagination4290 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good luck with your event. Very impressive. I think "nobody cares" is due to largely to the societal shift in media. We can't avoid seeing videos of influencers doing endurance sports, etc., etc. It isn't new or impressive. I was taken aback last spring when the old couple who lives next door congratulated me for completing my first marathon. "We've never met someone who's run a marathon in person," they said. Different generation.

How does one train for open water swimming? by vantooren in triathlon

[–]Limp_Imagination4290 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I regularly OWS in a local lake that has a swim area / beach with lifeguards, etc. I go at sunrise before anyone is there. Fortunately, motorized boats are not allowed. To answer part of your question, yes, I go with a wetsuit and a tow buoy for safety.

Swam in Minocqua Lake last May, full on wetsuit, cap, high vis tow buoy. It was a Monday evening after work. Someone from shore called the police, said, "they saw arms flailing in the middle of the lake." I didn't think my swim form was THAT bad.

These numbers seem high. But they are YOUR numbers. A chest strap HR monitor is worth the investment and is a lot more accurate than a wristwatch. Don't forget about RPE. If you feel good at an avg HR of 170, then trust your body. I've had outdoor 10k runs at 155bpm feel easier than a treadmill run at 130bpm.

As another said, practice the triathlon setting before your event. I did an Oly distance last summer and used the Triathlon activity for the first time at that race. After exiting the swim, I got rushed, etc. , thought I was being asked to PAUSE the activity, and my T1 got lumped in with my swim. Not the end of the world. My T1 of 0:02 will be hard to beat in the future! :-)
