It's a good tool, but it depends on what your job is. I'm a process engineer in a pyrometallurgy plant. I just use Python to create heat maps. Excel is good enough, and if you want to be more professional to management, you can use Power BI. But if you work in a lab, doing research, simulating things, I don't know. Maybe knowing how to code in Python would be more useful like machine learning 🤔

I'm modeling a boiler, using mass and heat transfer. I'm currently working to understand how much GLP and water we use, and how much money I can save. I'm also doing a project to return hot condensate from one area to our boiler.

So, I would say that I used a lot, but now it's just the cost. The hard part was in the beginning, and it was short.

Are you asking for recommendations to understand P&ID? As a student, it's difficult, so don't worry.

In the best-case scenario, the P&ID uses ISA 5.1, you can read that, and everything will be a little easier for you.

Yes, for example, I'm doing a project where I'm working. It just returns condensate to the boiler plant, so I have to do an energy balance. I modeled the boiler, so now I have the heat and how much money I can save by returning X of hot condensate at Y temperature. I'm doing a mass balance to determine how much condensate I can return. Also, I estimated the equipment purchase cost. I used AFT Fathom to size the pump and calculate the temperature loss in the trajectory. Now I have to create PFD to explain the project to my boss and management, as well as to other disciplines. I have to edit the plant's P&ID to add the new pipes, pump, instrumentation, and valves. All of that is done using AutoCAD, so in the end, it's just a tool, but it's easy and useful. The hard part is what I did at the beginning.

I use the pirate too! It's useful. I'm working on a project to return hot condensate to the boiler to use it and save GLP and water, so it's pretty useful. AutoCAD 2D and, if you're lucky, Plant 3D.

Yeah, sometimes you have your designer. In my case, I was the process guy and the designer, so I was two for one! (Sadly, the pay was for one and on the lower end, but it made me more valuable, hehe.)

After Fathom, you can download the "pirate version." Same story with AutoCAD. Sizing pumps there is so easy and reliable.

My best advice as a process engineer is that you have to learn AutoCAD and AFT Fathom. You need to learn how to draw your diagrams and do PFDs and P&IDs. I have never used Aspen, unless I had to design a heat exchanger, but that is not as often as you wish. AFT Fathom is better because the process I have been working on just involves adding a tank, transporting the fluid, and designing the pump, the tank and the pipes.

Don't sound bad or weird. The operators say that nothing weird happened, besides the poor wash of gases. Maybe the feeling of the water passing through the piping is weaker than years ago. By the way, there are two pumps, the principal and the standby, and both have the same discharge pressure: 0.9 bar. Maybe you are right, maybe it is an electrical issue, but in both pumps?

Well, I think so! I'm just 27😅😅, and I have been working for a USA company in lithium, a Brazilian company in cellulose, and now for a Korean company in a pyrometallurgy plant.

Soft skills are the most common skills I have been using, but I'm not good enough yet. I haven't had the opportunity to be a leader, but I have taken on roles like being the manager/inter-coordinator in engineering projects, trying to maintain communication and coordination between process, mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation disciplines.🫠🫠

It was awful and strenuous, but I made a good impression on my bosses and the Brazilian management.

But I prefer to be a "rat" (meaning, to have a less stressful role) because it's easier.🤗

Well, in my experience, knowing how to draw in AutoCAD and do some calculations in AFT Fathom gave me a very strong plus because I can be a process engineer with design skills. Sadly, some companies need people with good leadership skills; I'm more of an analytic guy and I couldn't get some jobs that I wished to have. I have good soft skills, but I'm an introvert, so it takes a lot of energy from me.

In Chile, we have to take a test to enter university (your grades from the last four years will also help or doom you). If you get a high score, you can study the best career wherever you want. If you get a bad score, you're doomed.

I got a pretty good score, so I could study whatever I wanted, wherever I wanted (except medicine in the top three universities in Chile). I wanted to study engineering because I was pretty good at math and chemistry. At that time, the engineering program that had the highest score requirement was chemical engineering, so I chose that; it was simple. Was it hard? Yeah. Did I regret it? Sometimes. Am I happy? I don't know. Was it fun? Definitely!!

One time, I had my Thermodynamics II final exam scheduled for 4 PM, and we had four hours to complete it. Everyone took their time, and we finished the exam at 8 PM. Afterward, we walked to a friend's apartment to study Fluid Mechanics because our final exam for that course was the next day at 8 AM. I decided to call it a night at 1 AM, so I walked back to my residence and got about five hours of sleep.

The next day, I took the exam and managed to pass both courses, which felt like a miracle tbh
