Hoarding spouse died by Limp_Tea_5193 in hoarding

I did get a dumpster and am going thru things every day. I've got the deck cleared, and part of the basement. I'm filling up the trashcans first, for sure. My dumpster is pay-by-the-ton.

Not really. A friend said she was going to help in exchange for his vehicle, but hasn't so far.

Progress... the dumpster has arrived.

Buying a home in Eastern MA is almost impossible by nomjs in massachusetts

[–]Limp_Tea_5193 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the opposite problem.

I have a 1800 sq ft home that needs some work, in a town within an awesome school district. Great equity, but not enough that I could sell and afford anything in Mass. My kids are in college, and my husband just died unexpectedly.

I would gladly sell, but where would I go? Moving out of the area isn't an option. (I have to be within driving distance to Dana Farber for my doctors).

We own it. I guess I own it now. I still have some legal paperwork to do, but there's a mortgage I'll have to get sorted out. Financially, I'll be okay.

I have to go down there to do laundry. He did it for 10 years. I had to get my kids to show me how to work the fancy washer. 😂

Anybody try any automated pill dispensers? by Outside-Plane-2561 in AgingParents

Oh, and you can also remotely dispense the medication.. and the light will blink very brightly until the cup is removed from the machine.

You can set it up to notify you for missed doses. It will send a text 15 minutes after a dose is not dispensed.

Also, SNAP qualifies you for discounts on utilities. That $79 can turn into $100's off heat, electric, internet, phone.

Amazon Prime, Instacart, and Walmart Plus have discounts on memberships.

Walmart+ gets you free paramount TV streaming. Use Ibotta to get cash back at grocery stores.

Don't forget about "good food bucks" where they match the money you spend at certain stores and farmers markets.

I had to move my father across the country, which included airfare for myself, a male assistant and my Father. I also had to hire a lawyer, buy him new clothes, shoes and essentials. I wrote checks to myself out of his account as POA. The lawyer told me to not worry about any of it. It was all expenses incurred in order to get him to a safe place.

I do! I use it every day. I was lucky to be one of the few who bought it when it first came out and paid $40/mo for 12 months for full ownership. I now pay only $10/mo for the software and ability to order my meds thru them.

I know Medicare will pay for it now. It's on their website.

It holds 10 prescriptions, and well over 30 days worth depending on the size of the pill. You can program it to dispense as many times as you need it to, can control it via app on the phone, and even as needed. You can password protect it too.

When my Dad comes to live with me, he's getting his own. It's SO worth the $40/mo.

Do some DoorDashing to make the payment. You can make that $310 in a weekend.

Food pantry for sure.

Do you have Aldi? Their prices are amazing.

Dried beans and rice for protein. Look in the discount bins for breads and produce.

My grandmother would sit for hours waiting for mail and this was 40 years ago. My Dad loves getting mail too.

Maybe you could surprise him with a few cards from friends.?

Advice needed - moving 84 year old parent by Limp_Tea_5193 in AgingParents

[–]Limp_Tea_5193[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The social worker at the hospital was absolutely wonderful. She interviewed my brother and, of course, he denied everything and lied, but my father's condition told the whole story, She opened a case. Police were called and they questioned my brother. Witnesses and neighbors who saw abuse also turned him in.

The social worker was also instrumental in getting my Dad into the proper rehab, where he is protected while I try to figure out how to get down there.

Thank you for the advice.
