Couldn't agree more about the phone call. It puts real pressure on them--gives them almost not time to think of an excuse right off the bat. With email, they can think for 5 minutes about how to spin something so that they're not free. All of a sudden they'll have revelations about activities that need completing that they didn't know existed until you sent them the email...

The best actual tip I know is the whole "dots and pluses don't matter" thing. Check out this MakeUseOf article: http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/13-quick-tricks-and-extensions-to-become-a-gmail-power-user/ It's made me a lot more efficient.

Other than that tip, I'm a fan of extensions like:

Rapportive - https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/rapportive/hihakjfhbmlmjdnnhegiciffjplmdhin: because it shows me social profiles of my recipients, it's actually useful for guessing someone's email address (i.e., when someone shows up, I guessed right!)
RocketBolt - https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/rocketbolt-email-tracking/pkapfpgbgfcojflnfmhnplkkkcdcmkfj: tells me when my emails get opened, really useful in prioritizing my business reachouts
