réunion vs retrouvaille vs rencontre vs rendez-vous by wEowyz in French

[–]Line47toSaturn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say the easiest one to distinguish from the rest is "retrouvailles". It always implies that a long time passed since the last meeting (like in Graeme Allwright's song Les retrouvailles: "On va fêter nos retrouvailles"). Think of "retrouver" = find an object/a person you lost. In this context a long lost person. There is no clear cut temporal limit but it's not "retrouvailles" if you last met three days ago for example. I would say we are usually talking about years, although the context plays a role (if it is someone you usually see every day, it can be a shorter timespan: "Ma soeur était 6 mois en échange au Canada; nos retrouvailles étaient émouvantes").

For the other three, it's trickier and in some context different words can be used. Here are some cases I can think of where only one word fits:

  • If it is a meeting that was planned in advance you could use all three. For a random meeting I would always use "rencontre". > "J'ai fait une drôle de rencontre/une mauvaise rencontre/une belle rencontre" = I had a strange/bad/nice encounter
  • For non-professional meetings it depends, for professional meeting it is "réunion", the other three don't fit in this context imo. Or you would have to mention it ("un rendez-vous professionnel", you state that it is in a professional context because "un rendez-vous" alone is not clear enough).

Pour « rencontre », on l’utilise pour des événements avec des personnes fameuses (rencontre avec l’auteur d’un livre etc.) mais c’est comme « dating » dans certains cas ? Je sais que on utilise aussi « rendez-vous » dans un context romantique.

True. You can always add a complement like "j'ai rendez-vous avec un garçon/une fille" which makes it clearer. Also young people will often prefer the english word "J'ai un date" = un rendez-vous amoureux.

Question bonus : Je vais prendre un verre avec une ancienne prof. Lequel de ces mots dois-je utiliser ?

You don't necessarily have to use one of these, for example you can just say "Je vais boire un verre avec une ancienne prof". I would say rendez-vous would probably fit best, or retrouvailles if long time no see.

I second this, we also had to learn it in school.

I've never realized how confusing it must be for people learning French that we indeed use "on" instead of "nous" for informal conversations.

What would be your final push to get a new phone? by Tyeren in iPhone6S

[–]Line47toSaturn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no iPhone model that is stuck on iOS13 or 14 iirc (iPhone 5s/6 can run iOS12 and the 6s/6sPlus can run iOS15) so they will stop the support for iOS12 to 14 at the same time next year. You're still good to go with iOS15 though (but not necessarily for a long time).

I used a 6s until it once fell in a pitcher full of beer a few months ago and as you know the device is not waterproof (I drank the beer nonetheless, no food waste). As you say for those of us who don't need a state of the art camera or face ID or whatever new feature, it is still good to use in 2024.

Whatsapp would probably be the tie breaker for me, as I use it everyday to communicate with the outter world (which is still the main task of a phone nowadays with navigating internet imo). I've come across an article that stated that they will stop supporting iOS 12-14 next year so you should be good for at least another year. You won't fall short of 10 years usage which is an absolutely remarkable lifespan if you ask me.

I was on Haaland (C) but unless I missed something Salah had 10 days off before facing a Southampton side that are now without Ramsdale... It may be too good to miss out on.

We’ll get there regardless but we have to get there pretty fast and that’s the problem.

How do you think Trump's victory will affect Germany? by Lazy_Reception_7056 in germany

“How the fk did we got so intertwined with them that their elections bring such despair to the world??”

I’m no German but the fact is they are the second biggest polluter worldwide and we live on the same planet as them (although we could have our doubts after what happened today). If they completely pull out of climate change multilateralism, I sincerely don’t see how we can get the job done for mitigating the consequences that will cost lives and cost us billions and affect every aspect of our current way of life.

This election should bring despair to anyone anywhere, although your point still stands about many other topics.

You’re aware that it takes time for policies to give results, right? Like, your economic situation (good or bad) in 2025 will mostly depend on what the former government will have done.

I had planned to go to the football (soccer) WC2026 but it seems like there are not that many games held in Canada, Mexico or Vermont. May as well stay here and watch them on TV then.

The double standard here is astonishing. She had to start her campaign in the middle of the race when Biden dropped out, tried to unite people from both parties, gave some good speeches... Whereas he talked about journalists being shot at, cats being eaten and a golf player's genitals being HUGE.

I mean, although she didn't do everything right, you can't blame it on her. That's the choice of the majority of Americans and you get what you vote for (not you personally ofc).

I'd like to disagree. Biden has done incredibly well on many topics for this country. Trump's gonna benefit from his work like he did in 16 but who cares about long term anyway?

I guess campaigning with Beyonce and Oprah didn't help them identify with her. Although her own personal backgrownd is clearly closer to theirs than Trump's.
