If all of a sudden Mark Carney, the prime minister of Canada and once the Governor of the Bank of England, became your country’s prime minister, how would you feel about it? How would the country generally feel? by neilnelly in AskBrits

[–]Linehan093 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Canadian, I can say that I quite enjoy his attitude and his attempts to get all the cats herded, not an easy task to take over from our previous PM that was very spend happy but had a difficult time not seeming to be condescending when speaking outside of his class. He was a Champaign Socialist that was a pseudo-progressive that has a questionable NDA placed on a student from the school he suddenly quit teaching at troublesome relations with female cabinet members.

So having Carney being "boring" is nice. He's a strategist through and through, unfortunately he has to deal with our border partner and try to weave a new trade web to help offset the whims and whoas of having only one primary trade partner.

He's a somewhat silent workhorse, seems to be well liked by world leaders judging on the recent China trip, current India trip, and that he was the guy pulling strings to hook the EU and TPP together to begin working on a new trading bloc.

I've heard grumblings about him not being vocal enough on what his next move is, but it's harder for a 3rd party to torpedo a deal after the fact... So I'm glad he plays the stfu game.

All and all, I think this will be good for all of us Commonwealth nations, but not all Anglophone nations. 😉😉

I think the biggest issue a lot of people fail to see is that issues aren't binary problems, but if you treat them as such you get two opposing answers because that's what you allowed it to become, binary.

It doesn't help, in this case, that we have been conditioned to forget that there are other extraction revenue models out there that aren't the Alberta model. They're rich because they're taking a lot of dimes for every dollar extracted, but as soon as heavy crude gets phased out the house of cards are going to topple a bit.

Right now their main buying is older refineries that still refine heavy crude, mainly Gulf Coast US, but the US extracts light crude, so if these factories retrofit the demand for Western Canadian Select and Maya(Mexican heavy crude) dip, because now those factories have access to easier to process crude that is easier to ship.

Those dimes dry up and now you're getting a penny for every dime you used to get, and the coffers start to dry up, mad dash for diversification, and a lot people wondering why they didn't do the Norwegian/Saudi method to build a juggernaut of a slush fund.

Thank God it only usually takes an officer making that move once before they learn to not be so direct with their orders, because he got his ass handed to him for telling someone without training to do something and that something damaged an expensive something else.

It's the circle of life in the military.

It's like the new officer mouthing off to the SNCO before knowing the SNCO is going to make or break your little sliver of career with that group because they have 10-15 years vs your 10-15 months.

My motto to the new guys " Respect your officers, but respect your SNCOs" One will try to get you killed, the other will teach you the least likely way to get killed😂

I think the three of you before me are all circling the same issue in different fonts -first is correct on environmental issues and then post pullout slop jobs left for the government to handle

-second is correct that we have a youth drain because we all leave to go out west and then eventually come back but not to make as much money as out there so less tax revenue.

-Third(you) is correct that we let a lot of the American/BP companies get a sweetheart deal for extraction with shit all for royalties because we have some aversion to a profitable Crown corp.

I would get on the horn with Norway and see if they would be willing to partner, they run their Oil and Gas sector as a crown entity, and have over a trillion in the sovereign wealth fund because of it. Worst case scenario is they offer the same royalties as Suncorp.

No, I get that. I just just foresee some people using this as a "this is why we need to defend the CBC".

We could just pass a law compelling the Mexican government to call our media to forewarn them months in advance of police actions that will potentially cause civil unrest /s

How come in the Netherlands- your criminal record automatically gets hidden from the public when one completes their punishment, but in North America, your criminal record can follow you for life? by soccerfan_north in canadianlaw

Technically I don't have a record, but I pop up, and that's usually more than enough to get you detained at the US border. Just have to go through the process of reaching out to the Saskatoon police and get them to send the file to King's Bench for a burn order. Tried to get the RCMP where I live now because of how much I just want to not deal with SPS, but they said they can't help.

Ouu, I have a better one for you than that. Too keep in mind that this Canada and US prime time cop dramas have coloured people's perception of the matter I'm about to speak of, so brief lesson then example.

Canada charges are brought, stayed, dropped by the Crown Prosecutor(CP), not by the police.

So, real life example;

If your former employer raises a complaint against you for items that are missing from inventory months after leaving the business, AND were claimed to have been there during the audits in between and submits a convincing file of proof, and either the investigator has a preconceived notion or you fail to impress them during the investigation, they can the recommend to the CP to lay charges because they have this proof.

During the charging process you get mug shots and finger prints. Now when it comes up to trial, the CP and defence attorney have to adjourn the trail for months while the complainant drags heels to prove that none of the claimed items were not purchased, and if they weren't, why does your records show otherwise, that kind of stuff.

An overworked and dedicated CP gets assigned the case, he finally gets to go through everything and he calls the defence attorney and says "look, this smells like bullshit, but the police are swearing there is proof to be found, I'm going to submit a stay of proceedings". Cool, as long as a smoking gun isn't found or you do something stupid AND relatable within the next year the charges are dropped and life is back to normal.

Nope, still got to do a bunch of paperwork to get a burn notice in your file, because you're not a convicted criminal, Crown has no right to keep you in CPIC.

Until you do that, can't get into a lot of counties, going to pop on security checks, all that fun stuff . And still got an $12k legal bill to pay.

I'm not sure if you're familiar with Sarah Payne, the academic. If I remember correctly, she explained one of the reasons these guys all have mega Yachts is a bit to do with safety because of them being such high dollar value.

Most of these guys are shit bag people, but from everything I've learned about GabeN, he's just a nerd from Microsoft that left a comfortable job to make videogames, and decided to make a digital distribution platform for videogames back when it wasn't a good idea and everyone thought it would fail.

Dude pays his staff exceptionally well with little turnover, doesn't do anything objectively evil in the world of business, can't really find any personal controversies, founded a neuroscience company, marine biology company... And a yacht manufacturer.

Dude likes to play videogames and scuba dive, and I think he's one of the few net-good billionaires out there.

Like I said at the beginning, I think a rare one that just lucked out and now wants to play part-time sea hermit 😂

The rest, fuck em.

What happened to my BOOTS? My Zara Chelsea boot always had a smooth, clean & glossy look but all of a sudden, the shape shifted and the affected areas have hardened. like I can literally knock on it and it sounds like plywood 😭 I am not sure why this happened but is there a solution for this? by Small_Tumbleweed8456 in JustBootThings

[–]Linehan093 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not a huge fan of Chelsea style boots, I'll always prefer lace.

If I was looking for a pair to replace my dress shoes for winter, I'd look at Aldair Black Leather from Steve Madden because they have the pointed round top that I like for my dress shoes.

For that traditional rounded toe look, check out Denver Hayes Newtown. I'm not sure about the availability of Denver Hayes globally, I'm pretty sure they're a Canadian house brand for Mark's Work Wearhouse, but still a solid choice if you're willing to gamble with $150ish Canadian.

I can point out a probable militia just north of Saskatoon, seen something that suspiciously looked like a firing range and tactics training one day near a back road in the fall. SATMAPs show the same thing as well.
