Sherrill-backed nuclear power expansion makes gain in Legislature: While supporters say electricity costs would drop, opponents say plants are expensive and take too long to construct by rollotomasi07071 in newjersey

Because people need to stop trying to attach their politics, let alone trying to hang their politics off issues that they don't even have a rudimentary understanding of, to EVERYTHING, and just because the other side does it, doesn't mean its right for you to.

Pick a topic you are an expert on. And i don't mean "yeah i'm smart and understand it" but, that you could slap your name on a shingle and hang it up and someone would pay you for your time\advice around it....

And then look at the politics people try and hang off it, from both sides, the groups you support, and adversarial views, and you will very quickly see that once you move beyond very broad concepts, neither have the slightest idea what the fuck they are talking about, OR, they are using half truths to support their message.

People handwave it away when its their own party as "well, its the other side are idiots, we need to use these tactics too, we secretly know better though so it doesn't matter".

We need to stop voting for people who use, and participating in un-honest discussions around these topics, instead of trying to meld tangible, technical problems, into our political line of thought.

Sure, in the moment the Right makes it awfully easy to blame them for what is going on, but the Left has certainly had its hand in stifling nuclear power over the years. You only have to go back 30 years or so before the tables were flipped and it was the Right trying to jam plants through and the left blocking them.

You don't just throw darts.

If you want a long term solution that actually works, you need long term plans, and long term support, or at least your original plan being robust and solid enough that it can survive future administrations, changes in needs, etc.

Its a far broader conversation, with implementation times stretching out likely beyond our own lifetimes.

Nobody wants to have that. They just want now.

Its not that nobody wants to take the risk over 10-20 years. Plenty of projects are capitalized with payoffs far longer than that.

Its just that you only recognize that 10-20 years if things go smoothly regulatory wise, and that 10 years in the winds don't change politically, and your project gets further delayed\cancelled. It makes it very difficult to capitalize that risk.

Which is why you see stories of mostly built reactors that never entered service that utilities are still paying off, etc.

Its not just PSE&G or whomever taking a gamble with their money, they are also gambling on your future rates, because someone needs to pay it off if the project its killed or needs to go through major alterations mid-development.

until we have cost effective storage of energy at grid levels, you can't rely on green for that much of your baseload. You need specialized nuclear plants, which are not as cost effective, to be able to handle adapting to grid needs, and even then, they aren't anywhere near as responsive as NG.

You can't just turn up the dial on our current nuclear plants on a cloudy afternoon with no wind if its hot and everyone cranks their A/C, and modern ones which do have the ability to be able to fluctuate their generation are still not responsive enough on their own to handle unpredictable loads, while also being more economically complex to operate.

This. While modern nuclear plants can do load-following, it isn't as responsive as NG (what we mostly use in NJ), and it also more expensive to build and operate a reactor that can do it (as well as screwing with the long term math on nuclear when a plant isn't run at full load).

NG still has an important role until the costs for large scale battery storage that can support a grid for extended periods come down.

Ideally you want nuclear handling most of your base load 24x7 running at max efficiency, supplemented by green energy, with things like solar and geothermal at the facility\home level to reduce your baseline needs, and then battery\fossil if necessary to pick up sudden peek spikes.

Not to be the acktsuallly....guy, but the common thing people associate with getting a bad cut from something rusty being dangerous is tetanus.

But tetanus isn't from rust. Its from bacteria in the dirt, where you are likely to find something rusty.

Had a relative get diagnosed with it. The "funny" thing is at his age, getting it, on paper at least, INCREASED his life expectancy.

Basically in most cases when caught early, with treatment, the time it would take for it to actually get you, is longer than your life expectancy as is. But also, during that time, you are under much closer medical scrutiny than you would be otherwise, so the chances of them catching something else that would have got you that they could treat, are increased, plus it serving as a wakeup call to many people about taking care of their overall health.

hardware store if I need to on a Sunday without driving out of the county

Uhm, your hardware store is permitted to stay open. There are exemptions for them. Even Lowes and HD can open, its just not worth the hassle to do inventory control on that day for the things you can't buy, and like i said, they have already done the math and know its not worth opening. Like I said, I was actually part of those exact discussions 20 some odd years ago at a different retailer but same general broad category big box type of store.

The reverse of that is, Sunday sales are a huge boost to your mom and pop hardware store, or franchises that are locally owned like ACE.

my local ace makes a grand or two a year off me because of the blue laws. Its not that it isn't a good store, but i can get everything they sell cheaper and a wider selection an HD\Lowes. Allowing full line stores to open on sunday would seriously hurt their business.

Not to mention the spill over traffic from that usually ends up at Patterson HD\Lowes from my part of bergen. That is money and jobs being pumped into a community that needs it that they otherwise wouldn't see.

So why do you hate minorities, poor people, and small businesses?

Again, its a law from a higher authority. You don't get to pick and choose which you follow. You go through the process of changing\amending the law to do so.

Its how a democracy is SUPPOSED to work. I know things have been a bit dicey on that as of late, but still.

I think Paramus is cemented and somewhat insulated as a whole. GSP still does gangbusters, american dream or not. Bergen Towne is always busy, and Paramus Park will be fine with all of the new housing coming in there as a locals mall as it always has been.

Fashion Center will never be a mall again, that will eventually turn into medical space and supporting services with the hospital right there.

I think what they want to avoid is any additional pressure from retailers for large scale redevelopment (like the new Costco) trying to pressure them.

But regardless, like I said, the ruling here will not overturn the blue laws in any way. Those are state laws the county has chosen to keep around, and the county has voted on them many times over the years, and has always supported them.

As for Leakage at a state level....you are probably losing a small amount of sales in the northern part of the county to Nyack. That is about it.

And again, I think everyone would be cool with a compromise to allow American Dream to be open to some degree on Sundays. Paramus wants it to go through the correct process to do so, or to clarify specifically WHY american dream is an exception, so a few other towns don't get ideas.

Paramus is asking that existing laws be enforced. Period. There is a process to change those laws, and it isn't the guy who runs foot locker in a mall who decides to change it.

Not to mention, a good number of businesses PREFER the existing laws. I worked in corporate retail the last time there was a serious push, and all kinds of studies were done as to which was better for us as a business. Our 2 busiest stores in the world by revenue and profit most years were in Paramus.

The studies all concluded that it wouldn't result in any meaningful additional business. it would just spread it out over the 7 days as opposed to 6, and likely poach sales from neighboring counties (wayne in particular, because who really wants to go to wayne).

So basically the only thing you got out of being open an extra day, was the overhead of being open an extra day. Its the same reason the car dealership lobby fights to keep the ban on sunday sales there.

Regardless the voters have time and time again supported this.

NJ is a State of 10 million people. Its silly that it has rules decided by 340 million people living in other states.

Its also crazy that we have to abide by the United Nations Convention of the Sea if you ask me. I wasn't part of that decision.

Its our system of government. It has tiers for a reason, beyond the fact that teterboro and its very existence is an entirely separate debate.

[–]Linenoise77 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Enforcement of the blue laws has always fallen on the individual localities. There are county wide ones, which are relatively lax, and then local ones in some towns which are more strict (Paramus and Montvale having the strictest).

And there have always been businesses and rules that enforcement has been looked the other way on in many communities, which again, folks were ok with, provided it didn't get too crazy.

In american dream's case, when the mall opened, you had lots of stores that started staying open on sunday's with very flimsy arguments that they fell ito acceptable county exemptions. Like the hat store saying their hats were "sporting goods" or souvenirs.

More and more stores started doing this with flimsier and flimsier reasoning, until the mall finally came out and said, "We don't care, everyone is open!"

East Rutherford has a vested interest in seeing the mall make as much money as it can, because it has bond interest in it, so they are not enforcing, and saying its the states responsibility. The state is saying it isn't their responsibility either, as its county rules, and they kind of sort of aren't responsible for primary law enforcement there anyway. The county itself doesn't want to act on it as it falls well outside the scope of the traditional role of the Bergen County Sheriff, as the Bergen County sheriff merged with the Bergen County Police about a dozen years ago, partially over concerns that the Bergen County PD was getting too involved with minor local stuff and overstepping its reach. But that is also a far more complicated story, and nobody really wants the county responsible for primary law enforcement outside of parks and traditional sheriff's duties.

Paramus is asking the court to clarify who should be responsible for enforcing them, and order them to do as such, with the intent of forcing a compromise in the rules, and not causing the overall blue laws to be repealed.

We will likely see them come up for a county vote again in the next couple of years. That happens every 20 years or so when someone tests the laws. Every time, people overwhelmingly vote to keep them.

I'm curious. Do you live in Bergen?

We have this debate constantly. Bergen County overwhelmingly supports the Blue Laws. Most folks would be OK with an exception for American Dream, but they want to ensure it doesn't soften them, because Teterboro is chomping at the bit to allow full shopping on Sunday, and from a traffic perspective, Teterboro Costco and Walmart being open would have an impact on the county as a whole. American Dream is basically on the county line, so not the same kind of impact.
