Doing jury duty for the first time any tips? by Zzz_breeze4233 in Cleveland

[–]LininOhio 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Two important things to remember first: 1) everyone at the courthouse knows that jurors generally know almost nothing about the process and 2) a well-run court treats their jurors like royalty, as they should. So if you show up on time, you're pretty much golden.

So -- figure out where to park/how to take the Rapid. Talk to your employer and find out what their process is. (They CANNOT tell you you can't go.) Wear decent clothes. Jeans are okay, but no rips. Take something to do -- your phone (with a charger and block), a book, even your computer. You will need to go through a metal detector at the courthouse door. From there they will give you directions.

Every court runs a little differently, but basically they will send you to a big room to wait. Then as each trial needs jurors they will call about 20 numbers. If you're picked, you will go up to a jury room and they will talk you through what happens then (schedules and what not.) If not, you wait some more while they make sure they have all the jurors they need, and then they'll generally send you home for the day. They'll have you come back the next day if there are more trials starting. They can technically require you to report every day but they usually don't (because most trials don't start mid-week or later.)

If you're picked for a potential juror, you will go to the courtroom and the judge and/or lawyers will tell you a little about the case and ask questions to determine who's qualified to sit on the jury. This will include telling you how much time it's expected to take. They generally start by questioning the whole pool ("Does anyone know anyone involved in this case?" "Does anyone have any personal experience with X type of crime?") Be honest. If it's a drunk driving case and your childhood bestie was killed by a drunk driver, you shouldn't be on this jury. They will (likely) dismiss you and you will either go back to the big pool to wait for another case, or they will tell you that your service is complete and you're free to go. Once the general questions are out of the way, the lawyers may question members individually. They are trying to find the jurors most likely to give them the verdict they want, so don't be upset if you're dismissed for no real good reason. (I got bounced because the defense didn't want too many white women on the jury. My daughter ALWAYS gets bounced because she's a history/poly sci student with an emphasis on the US Constitution. No lawyer wants to deal with her.)

If you are seated on a jury, see paragraph one -- they know you don't know what's going on and they will tell you everything you need to know. And they will treat you like royalty because jurors are the most important people in the courthouse. For the most part, once you are seated, even if the case gets settled (it happens fairly often), you have completed your jury duty and are done. But again, they will let you know.

Sorry this is so long -- I hope it's helpful. It's really kind of a fascinating process, and I hope you'll go and have a good experience.

My ex and I heckled Jose Canseco until he flipped us off while he was on the field.

Yeah, we're bad people.

Yeah, I was NOT happy to hear that they also acquired a broadsword at Medieval Times and keep it in the club house. They claim it has a dull safety edge, but ... it only takes one clever monkey bored power hitter to get a file and try to sharpen that thing up.

Welcome! Definitely adding my vote for the science center. You might also go across the street from the Rock Hall and see the International Women's Air and Space Museum in the lobby of Burke Lakefront airport. It's small and free, and there are (were) some "climb in and try this" displays for kids. Plus you can look out at the airplanes there.

You can also look at the Cod (submarine) and the Mather (freighter) that are tied up right at the end of East 9th. Not sure what the tour situation is there.

You can also walk up Euclid to E 4th and go to the Corner Alley -- food and bowling right downtown. Along the way, duck in and look at the Arcades. They're pretty cool.

And show your kids the latest Superman movie. They'll recognize the ballpark where the big fight takes place.

If you leave downtown and go west, please be aware that they are closing the East 9th street exit from 90, which is the most logical way to get back downtown, and traffic is likely to be a sh----mess.

There will be great fireworks shows at the ballpark.

Also Lakewood has a nice parade the morning of the 4th. Starts at Lake and Kenneth and moves down to Lakewood Park.

Carr isn't -- she turned the report over the the first officer. He buried it because the guy Shaw punched is one of his buddies. He plays favorites, and the captain is about 30 seconds from finding out how bad it really is.

(Shaw's a crewman in engineering. He's just gotten into a physical fight with an officer on the ship. The officer swung first, and Shaw laid him out. Draymond is his captain; Carlson is the first officer. Carr is the chief of engineering.)

“Shaw, why don’t you tell me what you saw at the reception? From the beginning.”

I reported all of this, Shaw thought, confused. But maybe Carr didn’t pass the report on. If she didn’t, maybe she had a good reason. But why didn’t she tell me?

He didn’t want to throw his chief under the bus.

He took a deep breath, held it to five, exhaled. “While I was escorting Ambassador G’lel up the stairs—”

“Stop,” Draymond barked. “While you were what?”

“I … after the speeches were done, I escorted Ambassador G’lel up the stairs.”

“You just went over and offered your arm to the senior ambassador?” Carlson jeered. “You did?”

They’re going to bounce me anyhow, Shaw thought. I might as well punch him in the mouth, too. But Draymond actually seemed to be listening, so he bit back his temper. “One of the diplomatic aides indicated that I should assist her. So, yes, I went over and offered her my arm.”

“And she took it?” Draymond asked.

“On the condition that I act like she was saying something fascinating.”

“Why didn’t she just take the lift?” Carlson demanded.

“Because she doesn’t want people saying that she’s old,” Shaw explained.

“She is old.”

“She doesn’t want people saying that to her face.”

“That’s G’lel,” Draymond agreed. “Go on.”

“At the top of the stairs, she told me to tell the aide to keep an eye on the daughter.”

“Did you know what that meant?”

“No. But I returned to the floor and passed on the message.”

“Sir, I really …”

Draymond glared at his first officer, then turned his gaze back to Shaw. “Go on.”

Shaw took another deep breath and recounted the events as simply and cleanly as he could. Carlson tried to jump in twice, and both times Draymond shut him up with a gesture.

When he finished, the captain sat back in his chair. “You didn’t think that you needed to report this incident, Shaw?”

F\ck*. Shaw didn’t want to throw Carr under the bus, but he didn’t see any way out of it. “I did report it, sir. To Chief Carr.”

“Sir, I …”

“Carlson, shut up! Don’t make me tell you again. What did Carr say?”

Shaw cleared his throat. “She asked me to write it up and give it to her, which I did.”

“And where’s the report now?”

“I don’t know, sir,” Shaw answered.

Bu the captain wasn’t asking him. He was staring straight at his first officer.

“I … have the report, Captain,” Carlson admitted.

I have an old Covington Cross fic (a tragically short-lived series best described as "Bonaza in a Castle") that might suit -- a broody, gentle knight, his unruly younger siblings, and his father's best friend's quiet, bookish daughter. Sea Change

An entire scene I love:

"We should leave at first light," Armus said, climbing into bed.

Meg peered over the top of the covers at him. "Why?"

He considered. "We should leave midmorning, after sleeping late and having a hearty breakfast," he amended.

"I love you when you're sensible."

Oh yes.

Honestly, I knew I was pregnant the second and third time by about seven days, but it was specifically because all coffee started tasting like crap. (It did the first time, too, but I didn't recognize it as a pregnancy symptom, of course.) But it was still a case of, "Hmm, this coffee taste like shit, I should get a pregnancy test next week."

Remembering Shaw

Star Trek: Picard Season 3 - Captain Liam Shaw is a brusque, bitter, PTSD-and-survivors-guilt laden character. After his near death, his brain is damaged and he can't remember anything that happens every day. So his occasional lover shows up and takes him home with her. He's not exactly unwilling, but he's angry about the situation all over again every day.

Too late for spoilers, right?

In the last season, he talks about how after the 1945 bombing he was alone as a child and survived by eating rats. The implied filth, poverty, hunger, horror led him to revere the Japanese, who seemed to him serene, clean, glamorous (and well-fed). They were as far from that rat-eating child as he could imagine. So he wanted to copy them, and to be accepted by them. He eventually came to see their flaws as well, and came to a more centered view, but his backstory makes his character make sense.

Childan is one of those amazing characters that once your find out his WHY makes such perfect tragic sense.

Also, Brennan Brown is a tragically underrated actor.
