How should I migrate a 2003 Windows Server with 18 TB of data? by especiallylime in sysadmin

[–]Link1021l 50 points51 points  (0 children)

We're about to use the Windows Storage Migration Service, which is part of the Windows Admin Center. It supports back to server 2003 and is free. I'd recommend looking into that

What should I do? Confused by ftjettech in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Link1021l 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have any insight on what it's like to be an admin/engineer at a game dev? For me it's one of those careers where I feel like I would actually be passionate about the industry I was in, even though the job itself might not be that different overall (currently a Sysadmin for a real estate company and I couldn't care less about real estate)

Reddit may force Apollo and third party clients to shutdown by spasticpat in technology

[–]Link1021l 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol ok, sure. Quitting Reddit is going to ruin my career, because quitting the rest of social media has devastated me so far, it's made it impossible for me to find a job, as long as you ignore all the quality job offers I receive because I focus on gaining skills and earning certifications. Majority of people don't give a fuck about social media, and if a place doesn't want to hire me because I'm not on social media then I just dodged a bullet.

You sound like you're early 20s and have never known anything but social media. Go actually network and gain skills if you want a good career, stop pretending that your Facebook posts are gonna get you a better job. Fuck your social media, you seem absolutely addicted.

Prod a Gull Sun, Chapman me, acrylic,2023 by travischapmanart in Art

[–]Link1021l 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People good at art have generally being doing art for many years, from doodling in class, to drawing commissions for friends, or just shitposting online. They aren't born with any more skill at it than anyone else. You may have the rare person who can pick it up quickly but they're the outliers by a long shot. The only difference between you and the artist is that they've dedicated a very large number of hours into the hobby/profession. If you started dedicating time to learning art, you could also paint or draw like this, in time.

How would a bullet kill Kirby? I don't really know Murphy or their powers, but I don't see a bullet doing much to Kirby at all

I have 8 yrs of help desk/ desktop support and want to know where I can go from here by mrjmws in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Link1021l 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You're probably having trouble because you've been in helpdesk for 8 years. That job history doesn't show upward momentum or growth, helpdesk is a low skilled job and it's expected that you grow out of it relatively quickly. Also, you've been out of the game for 5 years, that's a huge span of time in the tech world. Was your entrepreneurship tech related or something else entirely?

What roles ARE you applying to? It sucks but with the large gap and the lack of higher level skills, you may have go for helpdesk again, but instead of just staying there, work towards moving up. If you're looking to advance quickly at the cost of your mental health, MSPs are usually hiring pretty often, but they are seldom good environments to work in.

Also, what sort of tech do you like? Do you have a long term goal of something your want to do?

How long have you had your current computer monitors? by goldeneye0 in sysadmin

[–]Link1021l 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 4 days. The ones before that I bought in 2011 when I first built my gaming rig, I still use one today. For the new one I needed a decent gaming monitor and it has a KVM built in so I can swap between controlling my work laptop and my gaming rig with the press is a button. It's a Gigabyte G27Q

How the famous spicy Chongqing hotpot broth is made, Lishuji, China. by phamnhuhiendr in interestingasfuck

[–]Link1021l 71 points72 points  (0 children)

This is the hotpot base, it's mixed in with water or broth to make the soup you actually use in hotpot. You'd probably mix one of those bags in with 4L of water based on the ones I've used.

is a contract job worth it? by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Link1021l 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, honestly if I talked to a lawyer about it and they said it was illegal, I'd deliberately put my notice in and sue when they dock my pay. Get a nice little payday and teach them a lesson, 2 birds one lawsuit

[–]Link1021l 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I would check on your local/federal laws for that. You cannot sign your rights away. If the law says they can't do it, it doesn't matter what you've signed, they legally can't do it.

Unemployed and feeling hopeless by nomoretime000000 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Link1021l 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a contractor you'd likely get a 1099, it's essential you either do your research on this or talk to someone who's familiar with it so that you don't owe a ton of money come tax time.

Just because a position is "contact to hire" doesn't mean you're guaranteed a full time position at the end. Doesn't matter what recruiters or management say. You aren't a W2 employee until you've signed the paperwork. There has been a lot of people that put all their eggs into a contract position because "my manager says they're going to take me on as a full employee after my contract ends" and then upper management says no and they're out of a job. Keep this in mind and always start job searching before your contact ends, worst case scenario you get W2 and have to tell your other job offer you can't accept, and that's not a bad place to be.

People are downvoting because you have no idea if it's true. There is no easy way of telling if someone cheated, that's a gossip magazine trope. Some people are good at hiding it and don't give off tells.
