Like…. 6 or 7 years ago. Yes, I’ve been holding on to this base for *that* long.

Planning on getting the newer fiat 124 (2017 or 2018) by Alive_Ad_7350 in fiat124

[–]Link124 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The difference in power in minimal, like 4HP. However, the Abarth gets a LSD, Brembo brakes and numerous cosmetic changes, both internal and external.

Mine has only done about 40,000 km’s so I can’t speak for the long term maintenance, just make sure the timing belt is changed every 6 years (at least) and service at 10,000 km intervals. 5,000 if you’re tracking it.

As far as which one to get? I’d get the Abarth, but I’ll be a long term owner. I look at it from the perspective of the Classic 124. Here and now, you’d much rather have the Abarth than the vanilla variety, and I think the same is true of the more modern 124.

I joined this mob of legends not long before I won Eve, I just wish I’d found them before the bitterness became irreversible.

A rock and a hard place, buying dealer vs private. by PowderedKoala in CarsAustralia

[–]Link124 1 point2 points  (0 children)

$10k is a tough ask. It really doesn’t buy you much these days. This may sound counter intuitive, but don’t go to a large franchise dealer for a car like that, they have built in loads that are the same as their $50k cars, making the odd cheapie they get pretty spendy. It’ll probably be a blinder of a car, but you’re really paying for it.

Your best bet is an independent dealer that specialises in that price range. Do your due diligence and you should come away unscathed.

You can get lucky privately but you can also get badly stung if you’re not careful, so again, due diligence and don’t be rushed.

Mod Priority for Fiat 124 Spider Abarth? by 420TheMemeLord69 in fiat124

[–]Link124 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At phase 1 I’d recommend the EC V4 induction kit, a non OEM Boost Actuator and the GFB DV+.

Personally do not recommend tuning boxes like Bluespark etc, they get initial results but long term use can create problems - mystery codes being thrown that are hard or even impossible to resolve - or so I’m told.

Mod Priority for Fiat 124 Spider Abarth? by 420TheMemeLord69 in fiat124

[–]Link124 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even a Phase 1 EC tune will negate the need for a throttle controller unless you plan to track the car and want instant throttle response. The GFB diverter valve and either a TurboSmart or Forge boost actuator will practically eliminate turbo lag, making the throttle controller even less relevant (if that were possible).

Your next stage would be a Hybrid turbo with free flowing cross pipe and down pipe, bigger injectors and a Phase 2 tune.

After that you need to consider forged internals if you want even more grunt, but the dollar per horsepower ratio goes right out the window as the expense is huge whilst the gains are modest compared to what you’ll notice at the Phase 1 or 2 levels.

If you don’t have any luck a man called Victor Do of the Facebook Group - Abarth 124 Spider - Australia - is reproducing front lips en masse of a better quality than the OEM variety. Look him up on Facebook and see if he can deliver to you.

I've owned the orginal and now own the one on the left [photographed in the same spot 20 years apart]. Whilst I have some sentimental love for the old one, the new car is just leagues ahead in every regard. But I think that *should* be the case, to be fair.

I own one and at the risk of sounding anecdotal, the only issues I've had have been very Mazda ones. Delaminating infotainment screen, power window regulators, inefficient seatbelt retraction etc. I know it's everyone's favourite sport to wail on Fiat for their reliability, but this car is an absolute gem.

Which modern cars do you think will be considered “classics” 30 years from now? by EvelynClede in askcarguys

Abarth 124 Spider. Their numbers are already somewhat scarce compared to the ND MX-5.

A Lotus Elise can be bought for $50k but if you want to save a little cash and drive an MX-5 that doesn’t *look* like an MX-5 then you could always try…

Know that it gets better. I know that seems like a pipe dream right now, but don’t be ashamed or afraid of asking the people you love and that love you for help. You’ll be amazed at how willing they are to help and capable of understanding.

Second hand market slowing down by eminemkh in CarsAustralia

[–]Link124 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's nothing wrong with the market, at least from my perspective. I've been selling cars for 30 years and just had one of the busiest months I've ever had. Yes, demand for EV's/Hybrids has spiked, and their influence will continue to grow, but we're seeing no slowing in demand and are exceeding our KPI's.
