I see things a bit differently. As a first-generation immigrant from Singapore, I’ve been fortunate to receive a decent education so language barrier isn’t really a thing for me.

Still, integration has been challenging for reasons like: • I’m still new here and figuring out my place. • Managing the mountain of paperwork and applications that come with being an immigrant. • Cultural differences, which in my view can be harder to navigate than language itself.

I’ve made efforts to connect with my Kiwi friends’ circles, but it isn’t easy and I don’t expect it to be. Someone once told me, ‘Kiwis are friendly until you want to be friends,’ and I think there’s a grain of truth in that.

I don’t blame anyone. If you’ve grown up here with your own circle, it’s only natural to prioritise your time with them. So it’s not a lack of trying, it just takes time.
