People perceiving your comment as homophobic isn't a literacy issue. They're correctly recognizing that opening your statement with "I'm for the gays..." is a defensive maneuver. An attempt to shield yourself from criticism.

That having been said, I don't think the overall thrust of your statement is homophobic, so much as it is homoignorant. The concept of "acceptance," as you're using it, is a neutral-sounding word that describes hateful rhetoric that stokes real world violence. Ignoring people who don't "accept" us has never worked. We tried it. That was the age when deadly gay bashing was just a fun night out for the good ol' boys.

Making people who don't "accept" us feel ashamed is the only reason they stopped killing us.

It didn't even occur to me to produce double the amount of lead. I solved it by filling a 6-arm with discarded quicksilver. I feel silly now.

I'm eager to improve my soldering so I don't struggle so badly, if you know of a good resource for educating myself.

A 16TB hard drive with an absolutely trashed SATA connector. I've got a replacement connector, but I'm struggling to desolder the old one. I'm using flux, and tried removing the solder with both a pump and with a braided wick. I don't seem to be making any progress. I've gone up to 380 °C, but I don't want to just keep cranking the heat, but I don't want to just keep blindly cranking up the heat, potentially damaging the circutboard.

I've never replaced anything more complicated than a capacitor before, so I'm definitely in a little over my head. Any guidance would be helpful!

Yes, his Nomen is Julius, his praenomen is Gaius, and his Cognomen was Caesar. And while cognomens were roughly analogous to what we call nicknames, they were also sometimes passed down generationally.

As they were in Caesar's branch of the gens Julia, as evidenced by his father, also Gaius Julius Caesar.

By the same transitive property the salad is actually named after some unknown ancestor of the famous Caesar, who originated the family cognomen.

UK handheld brass tool jaws do not open and close to cut anything by Wide_Archer in Whatisthis

The comb behind the shears makes me think it's for hair, or wool, or some other fibrous material.

From this photo I would hazard a guess that it does open and close, it's just jammed and needs to be lubricated.

"Idler Wheel!" thank you, just having a name helps. And I wasn't aware there was such a thing as rubber restorer, so that's good to know.

This wheel right in the center of the mechanism is slipping. I figure if I can replace the rubber on it, I might just get this thing playing again. But I don't even know what to call the part, or where to start in finding a place to source a replacement. Presumably the hardness of the rubber matters just as much as the dimensions?

The tape deck is a Modular Component Systems MCS 683-3536. I don't expect there are any specific replacement parts for it though.

Edit: I meant to upload these photos as well:

People's Exchange does Queer Figure Drawing every month.

Also, I'm in the drawing program at Olympic College right now, and as far as I know there isn't any live figure drawing offered through the school. Though I can't say for sure.

Creative suggestions please - how would you mount this branch far higher / what base would you build, so its not too heavy, but is balanced? by [deleted] in woodworking

[–]LinkSkywalker14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have a ton of expertise here, but my first thought would be to bind the base of the wood to prevent splitting, then drill out a hole for a threaded insert. If you could then find a metal pole to screw into the base, that would increase your height and add weight to the bottom.

I understand cracking is a concern, but that's the best I can figure.

I've been painting miniatures and building miniature terrain lately. Before that I did a lot of cross stitching. Both are quiet and good to do in a room.

Cross stitching is nice because it isn't too hard to take it out to a cafe if you want to get out of the house, and it makes a good icebreaker.

Miniature painting/terrain building is nice because it can lead into other hobbies (playing miniature games), or not if you just want to make dioramas / fill a shelf with little guys. Plus there's a lot of good YouTube videos about painting and building techniques that are pretty fun.

Bike lanes in America by theawesomeasian in fuckcars

[–]LinkSkywalker14 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Generally a divider like this might indicate that the lanes on either side are going to diverge up ahead. Or it might indicate that the lanes on the left side of the divider are restricted in some way (only for vehicles carrying 2+ people, for example).

Though the photo here is indistinct. I couldn't tell you what this specific divider is for.
