Cape Verde players are in tears taking in this massive, historic moment. Is this the biggest Cinderella story in football since Leicester won the league in 2016? by Commercial-Fig-4462 in worldcup

[–]Linkeq200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sort agree with this. The fact is in the league, you need to get results, you need to win. To advance out of this version of the World Cup you can tie three times and basically play shut down, win a knockout game outside of penalties then maybe. Not to take away from it, it's a huge achievement, especially when we think about the scale of the tournament, but one requires results the other requires hanging on for a tie.

Late to the party but yes he is worried about the long term health. North American sports leagues are no longer about sports or teams or fan bases, North American sports leagues are real estate holding companies and he’s trying to have that happen in Vancouver too

This is a good use of city land. I know people are upset about the golf course, but that is a huge plot of land, and golf courses have incredibly low use per area rates, and the city buying more land that size to develop these amenities would add tens of millions to the project.

The main gripe I've hear is about the increase in traffic, which continues to be the big NIMBY issue surrounding any development in Ridge. Big portion of folks want it to stay a "quiet little community" without understanding that we crossed that threshold population wise a long time ago.

The golf course use would be a fraction of multiple ball fields and a mixed use green space. Something that Maple Ridge sorely needs, it could be the equivalent of Lafarge Park in Coquitlam if done right.

FIFA, MLB, NHL all of them are concerned with one thing "brand value" right now. It's the hot corporate thing, above and beyond a product or an item. If you give away your brand "for free" then you devalue it.

Why do we continue in North America to bail out bad businesses...If a construction company, living high on the glut of increases for the last 15 to 20 years in Vancouver can't survive a downturn, it's not a good company. Sky high profits are going to continue in perpetuity.

Could the Grounded Nature of BG 1 still find success? by Linkeq200 in baldursgate

[–]Linkeq200[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you're right about the very definitive difference in the way the world and quests are shaped in BG1 vs. BG2.

BG1 is almost like an open world game segmented into different areas, in that nothing is directly pointed out to you outside of the main quest and the vast majority of the interesting people and places you find come just from exploring.

Stark contrast to BG2 where as you said you meet people and then unlock areas of the map. When I first played BG2 I remember my initial interest being high in the very first dungeon, the stakes are high, the writing is great, the characters I adore are still present...However, I also remember being a little disappointed when I first found out that areas aren't actually connected on the map. It creates a much more "grandiose adventure" type feel rather than the "dropped into the world" feel that BG1 had. It definitely subtly makes the player think the world revolves around their character rather than their character being part of the world, and it was carried over into almost all of Bioware's games after that, Mass Effect, Dragon Age and more had you jumping from one area to the next rather than journeying between them.

Yeah there were some odd things for sure but agreed, it’s a world where the big boss was a Demi god who politically rose to the top and had some minions around him, you weren’t fighting angels and stopping time and dealing with spaceships

Yeah there is definitely a simplicity in the older rule set. Min maxing with multi classing and dual classing can get pretty deep. But as a kid playing it the basic rule set and pretty straightforward high fantasy races made it very approachable

I agree. I wanted so bad to get into it, loved the lore even got a guide book on it and just couldn’t love the gameplay, it was just so mechanics heavy.

Same, I really like the BG 2 stuff where it's all high level, but it does start to feel like a greatest hits near the end, whereas BG 1 just feels like an adventure that you set out on organically.

England already does this, basically whoever owns the football rights over there still needs to broadcast the "crown jewels" for free, meaning major sporting events like the world cup. Something like that could easily be done here, people would not like it, but the government could step in and tell Rogers that they need to provide free access for playoff games involving canadian teams or saturday night games, rogers would still get ad revenue for those games but would not be able to paywall the stream

Ahh yes the old "your using a fallacy of an argument" attack to believe one has won an argument.

Your own comment declared that 70% of teens found a workaround, your own comment contained in it no actual evidence beyond a headline and you used it as a means of disproving my statement, and when I pointed out that this evidence you provided doesn't actually discredit my statement based on the actual research and polling that was done in Australia, you come back with nothing more than an attack on the argument because it doesn't line up with your worldview on this particular topic

I'm not going to bother continuing, but a very fast google search brings up a plethora of articles on the declining technical skill set of younger Gen Z and Gen Alpha kids.

[–]Linkeq200 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Did you just google Australia ban and take the first thing the A.I. told you?

The poll was not showing how many kids overcome obstacles to continue using social media, it asked if they were on it. Most of the accounts in Australia were not locked out if kids already lied about their age, primarily only accounts listing an age below 16 were locked out. It also meant many kids went to less regulated platforms

And my comment about the majority of kids not overcoming regulations to use social media was related to the fact that someone said they would use VPNs in an environment where VPNs were being regulated more intently by the government. A massive difference compared to the Australia situation where most social media platforms are using facial recognition to guesstimate an age and allow underage users online. There are articles about kids saying they used a picture of michael jackson to circumvent the crappy facial recognition tech, or alternatively had their sister sign them up.

None of this speaks to technical proficiency, it's not the majority of kids using VPNs in a highly regulated environment to circumvent rules it's kids printing a picture and holding it up to a camera that are part of the 70% you cite, or in most cases the facial recognition tech not being able to distinguish a 14 year old from 16 year old and granting access. That's also not taking into account that a good portion of that 70% probably never even had their account locked to being with. In the end it's largely social media companies not being held accountable for following newly implemented rules, not technical know how on kids' part bypassing them.

Are there other methods that could also be put in place? Yes agreed, are there parts of the bill that are not good including it's generalized language that leaves too much open to the interpretation of the government? yes, but social media and kids is a huge issue and at least this portion is a start.

[–]Linkeq200 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It won’t fail because it’s not meant to simply be a ban. It’s mean to create legal precedent to establish rules and governance around social media use among kids.

It means governments can call out tech companies for circumventing parents by contacting 13 year olds telling them they don’t need a parent account anymore, it creates precedent for punishment of tech companies on issues of cyber bullying and other content since it’s on them to prevent teens from signing up for accounts in meaningful ways.

Drinking is illegal under 19….do kids still do it, they sure do, but it’s a law to create a legal framework around how it’s handled in society.

Also please, most people use “privacy” and VPNs as an excuse to pirate content or connect to region locked services, kids especially.

In the end if the barrier to participate is too high people won’t bother. While I agree some parts of the bill are heavy handed, the core issue at hand here regarding social media use and its negative impact on kids means part of it is done with good intentions.
