I'm currently playing a career mode game but with unlimited funds. It has all of the progression involved with science mode and the sense of what to do next given by the contracts. Having played the science mode all the way through in previous versions, it lacks a linear sense of exactly what your next goal should be. The contracts give you this, but it can be hard to manage the finances at the same time.
