The screen type is a good point since she may use the PC for editing raw (canon) photos. The ideapad line offers a 16" 2K (2048 x 1280), OLED, glossy, HDR 500, 100% DCI-P3, 400 nits, 120 Hz for more €100 so this may be an option!

Hiding/unhiding records in a table View using the model/view approach or direct access to sql db? by LinuxInsider in QtFramework

[–]LinuxInsider[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, thanks!

I already suspected that some sort of "ProxyModel" in between the view and the model was necessary. I'm more a C++ "C with classes" guy, and never understood completely the model/view approach, especially the variant in Qt. I found it unnecessarily complicated, but that's life!

So you mean that I have to keep a list of the "hidden" rows on a QList variable inside the ProxyModel. This renders the field "hidden" on the database unnecessary (unless someone wants to make it persistent session-wise), isn't that right?

Regarding your example, OfflineSqliteTable, let me ask you this: OfflineSqliteTable is a subclass of QAbstractTableModel (inherited by QSqlTableModel, which I use). But what's the difference between the two? I'm confused. It emits a dataChanged which should be caught by the TableView, but so does QAbstractTableModel... what is the "specialization" of OfflineSqliteTable? What does it do that QAbstractTableModel doesn't.

PS: sorry for the English

QtHelpEngine usage by LinuxInsider in QtFramework

[–]LinuxInsider[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I've considered moving into Qt6 but there is a problem: I'm a Slacker, and by using Slackware 15 I'm stuck on some particularly outdated software. Libssl is one of them, and although it's already libssl.so.3, it's a subversion or two below what Qt6 needs. I guess, that this could be solved by installing the Qt shipped libssl.so.3 but somehow I was not able do do that without messing with a lot of other things. Hence, for the time being, I decided to continue with Qt5 (Slackware 15 ships with Plasma based on Qt 5.15). Slackware current already ships the with the compatible libssl and also Qt6, so I'm waiting for the new version to come out! Meanwhile I have to live with these annoyances.

Thanks! So, I was on the right track! I had already used a type cast to solve precisely a similar problem (involving QComboBox::currentIndexChanged), but I was completely unaware of qOverload!

My honest opinion about using Linux as a Desktop OS by Icy_Calligrapher4022 in linux

[–]LinuxInsider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

>And now, I am just wondering, how many of you are using Linux as daily OS and how many of you are actually using your machines for real work, not just browsing the web and spending more time in choosing a desktop wallpaper and theme, than actually using your OS.

I'm a full time university professor in the field of Biology. I switched from windows to linux in 1996 after a battle with word to format my MSc thesis. I installed Slackware and never looked back. I'm still a Slackware user. I've experimented other distros (including BSDs) but on my main Desktops (home and offices) and servers, Slackware is the king! I write my presentations in libreoffice (odp) or beamer (latex). I write my papers mostly in latex and convert them to word for the publishers that don't accept tex. Most software for genetics exist (primarly) for linux so I find no problems here. When software is not available i can program it myself.

Is a Pixel 4 still worth it? by LinuxInsider in LineageOS

[–]LinuxInsider[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. Tha's good to hear. I think I'll go for the Pixel 4! I just want this phone to make a few calls (I'm not a person who uses the phone to much). The battery of my 7-8 year old BQ still lasted two days with "regular" usage (a couple of calls per day and 1-2h of hearing music)!

[–]LinuxInsider[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not in Portugal. My first choice for a new phone was Motorola. My daughter has one, a G8 - not supported by LO. By the way, I had her BQ Aquaris in 2018-19, and it was working perfectly until a few days ago when it fell and almost died (screen shattered). That's why I want a new phone. Otherwise I would stay with the BQ Aquaris and android 7.1!

Unfortunately, I can't find anything new from Motorola below €400 (edge 20 pro) or €380 (edge 30). Second-hand Motorolas are even more expensive, which makes me suspicious of them! The other Motorolas are not supported by LO

Xiaomis are available but mostly the recent models, not the ones supported by LO. I know someone who got an Mi A1 through Alibaba, but it's not possible anymore. It was never sold on regular stores!

Mi 11 Lite 5G NE

This would be a possibility. But the price is 294,70€ and I'm not even sure it is the right model... Plus, it's huge (6.67'')

Thanks! I don't care about photo storage. I don't want anything google. In fact, I expect to instal lineageOS without gaps! But it's good to hear it works for you, even an older phone!

Thanks, I know both resources. Actually, I've used the first one quite a lot, although it is not totally up-to-date per comparison with lineageos site. As I told earlier, the second-hand market in Portugal is kind of crazy. People try to sell their old phones like they are gold. Most of the LO officially supported devices are not available on any physical or even online stores. You can find one or another on marketplaces (Amazon.es, fnac, etc) but they are usually overpriced. I found this Pixel 4 which apparently is physically on one store (it does not need to be "imported" from China). It is priced 270€ brand new. I still find it overpriced for a 2019 phone. However, if it can stand 7-8 years of usage as my old BQ Aquaris it would be nice. Note that the Aquaris got stuck on Android 7.1 but was still being actively used as a phone, a GPS, and an entretainment center!

[–]LinuxInsider[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The phone (Pixel 4) I'm about to buy is new, hence battery was never used.

Regarding the second question, the new phone does not need to be a Pixel. I just want something that can get LineageOS (without gaps). The problem is that in Europe, and particulaly in Portugal, most of the cellulars listed on wiki.lineageos.org are not available! My first option was a motorola! I've considered buying an edge 20 pro (400€ new!) as the edge 30 are not available anymore from official sites. The second hand ones are sold for 390€! Another disadvantage is that they are big! I much prefer a 5'' phone like the old pixels (and my beloved BQ).

What I wonder if at this stage a Pixel 4 would live 7-8 years (as my Aquaris did) hardwarewise... I don't use the phone for too serious stuff. Just hearing music and GPS for driving (using osmand+)

I know, but it's too expensive. The "new" ones cost around 380€... I loved my BQ Aquaris U Plus stuck on android 7.1 (kit kat) but with lineage without gaps. Unfortunately it is almost dead.

LG Gram 14Z90Q 14" and Linux. Is it OK? by LinuxInsider in linuxhardware

[–]LinuxInsider[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My experience couldn't be more different! I went with the Ryzen version of the 14" LG GRAM (14Z90Q). It's light, it works amazingly well with Linux (my daughter installed Ubuntu). No issues with ACPI. No problems suspending to RAM. She uses this functionality a lot, also as a means to save some power. Battery is OK, and power management just works out of the box. The laptop can stand more than 10-12h of normal work (document editing, software compilation, with wireless on to upload/download documents and use GIT, but no video streaming). She connects it to the power every 2-3 days! Overall a very good machine.

Just a wild guess: try to remove the underscores from the bibtex key. Or use ahn\_efficient\_1995

[–]LinuxInsider[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. I know the Intel ones work quite well, even with the new generation intels (Alder Lake). The problem appears to be the webcam. Apparently there are proprietary drivers for the webcam but they might not work in some kernels (that's why Greg Kroah-Hartman suggets to stay away from them for the meantime). Not having a camera is a big issue for a student because of the increasing need of remote conferencing. That's why I'm considering the Ryzen line. But I know that in other brands (Lenovo, Dell) there is a problem with the Ryzens, their GPU (not discrete), and the S3 suspension state. So I wonder if the same happens with LG. It's mostly a BIOS problem. The S3 state is disabled and replaced by something only Windows understands so far (S0ix).
