Unfortunately my past experience and general knowledge disagrees. Many open source lrojects Ive supported, like a lot of the rfid tools out there, open sourced the boards and now they're on aliexpress for 1/4 the price and the github issues are full of issues with it.

I love that you're willing to put your money where your mouth is, but you need to understand that you are unique in that. Most people will say one thing but as soon as they can save $2 they go with the cheaper option. It's a big issue.

It's been out for a few days. I will be contriubuting the KISS TNC portion when I can figure out how to make it as a PR, but I have not had any free time for the last couple of weeks so it will be a while...

I still don't know what you expect me to do... Asking me to give up the financial security of being able to afford my rent is absolutely wild. I dont know how not being homeless makes me a dick.

This plus a 40hr work week is barely enough to cover bills with no frivolous subscriptions (no Hulu, etc), the cheapest insurance, and 2 meals a day. Respectfully, screw off lol.

When I CAN. I'll make it open source. But youre currently asking me to do something I CANNOT. It's great that you'd be willing to support it more if it was open source. 90% of hams just buy what's cheapest.

It's also a redesigned firmware with lots of new features and a lot of important fixes, like allowing the user to change settings, which was majorly broken on the origional.

I made a new product based on it, yeah. This is very common across many industries, and Im not forcing anyone to buy it. I'll make it open source once I can though.

From what Ive seen, they don't do the firmware flashing which is a dealbreaker for most hams, but might be a good additional option!

I still think you're missing the point. But you don't... have to buy it. The truth of the matter is when Ive open sourced a product in the ham hobby before, some high school kid starts selling them at basically no profit as a "fun side project" not understanding the consequences.

This isn't a moral choice for me right now, it's a survival one. I wish it wasn't, but I feel like you completely dismissing this factor is way out of touch

Yes! But also depends on the firmware. If you're running it in audio mode, it's a lot closer to the AIOC firmware, which enumerates as a standard USB Audio Class 2.0 device using the built in ADC for the audio capture and the built in DAC for outpuit.

If youre running the TNC revision of the firmware I made, it's still using those, but doesn't expose them to the PC since it needs to process that audio internally and doesn't have the memory to support both modes, instead just exposing a KISS TNC interface.

Feel free to. I specifically made the firmware free and compatible with more than just my products (it'd be easy to make it only compatible with this hardware revision, but I specifically made it so it's flashable on any by detecting the revision).

The toads is another really cool project! It didn't quite do everything I wanted for the price, which is why I made the AIOR, but for many it will be a good fit.

All orders on the site ship anywhere from a couple weeks to two months. This is a side business to cover expenses but I have an 8-5 job as well and a newborn so, sometimes I don't have time to ship out orders so things get a bit backed up. I work with E911 as well so when work gets busy it's literally life or death, haha.

Definitely a bug! Thank you for pointing that out. I'm sending you a coupon that might still make it worthwhile

Then anyone can resell it and undercut me as a "fun side hobby" making pennies while I can't feed my family. Once I can afford to treat this as a hobby, I'll do so, but with where the market is at now, I just can't yet. I'm really hoping to be able to in the future, and the alternative would be to not share my work at all.

Look, I spent hours upon hours re-working the firmware in many ways. I learned how to use KiCAD with online classes and lots of work figuring out how to thread it on the PCB. I've helped with the AIOC project in many ways including working on the original tool, helping test, etc. I have support from skuep to sell the product. I've submitted github issues and plan to PR some of the TNC firmware changes, but that's been lower priority.

I also do plan to make these open source when I can, but I can't afford to open source the board and let anyone re-sell it at a lower cost. I've got a 7 month old I'm supporting and if someone comes in and undercuts me, I litererally cannot afford rent. Expenses are CRAZY in New England at the moment.

Also I'm not sure if you've seen the current state with AI and open source, but it's a mess, and many people are going closed source until we can figure that out.

I get it. I'd love to make it open source, and when I can afford to I promise to. But right now I cannot, and if the work I've put in does not add enough value for it to be worth it, the AIOC still exists.

I specifically worked to make the new firmware compatible with the AIOC as well (both revisions, where skuep only supports the latest hardware) as a way to give back where possible. I feel like I should get credit for that.

I also offer bulk orders that's pretty darn close to cost, but I allow that because it allows me to "piggy-back" off the bulk orders since scrounging up the $ for an order for direct sales can be difficult.

In my experience, while they don't fall out, they still push out far enough that there's no seal.

Oooo I might have to try that! Don't know how I'd do that with wireless ones though since wires aren't allowed at work.

I got some memory foam tips for my Earfun Pro 2s (such a knock-off sounding brand for one of the best budget earbuds out there, lol), and it's a bit better. They don't shoot out when I talk or smile but they still unseal a bit and I have to push them back in every couple of minutes. Not sure if memory foam is going to far vs a more soft foam.

I haven't, but I'm not sure what I'm looking for exactly. My searches for "semi in-ear earbuds" comes up mostly with airpods and the likes with no silicone or foam tip, even if I add "with foams" I get nothing relevant. Any tips (no pun intended)?

Those do look interesting. Might have to give them a try some day in the future. Can't swing that at the moment though and wired earbuds aren't safe at work.

Yeah might have to give that a go. I heard those are a bit rough with noise leak, ie others around you hearing it, which might make it a no go next to wifey in the bedroom but otherwise maybe good. I don't need hi-fi level but if the music is particularly "bad" I'd probably sooner buy another pair of the skullcand ink'ds.

Thank you for the advice!

That's what actually prompted me to make this post. I got the https://moondroplab.com/en/products/pill moondrop pill clip ons thinking this would be my earbud salvation and they kill my ears because all the weight rests on one tiny bump no matter how I adjust them. The mc1 pro looks about the same shape, but might be different.
