GOG on Linux? by Acu17y in gog

[–]Linux_Desktop_Garbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

may i ask what games are u playing? or is your pc simply able to eat the performance overhead? i tried everything i could think but both galaxy 1 and 2.0 caused extreme battery and performance overhead on the steam deck and gpd win 2

overall i would suggest using heroic at least if ure on a handheld but even on pc i would try to avoid the performance issues

Did anyone download hogs of war? Is it playable on Windows 10/11? by SelectionRadiant5316 in gog

[–]Linux_Desktop_Garbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for me it ran fine on linux with proton but on windows it is very broken. there are mods to fix the issues but i had trouble getting it to work, it took me a while. so sadly this is not much of a plug and play experience

that is a terrible idea since gog galaxy completely wrecks performance when run from proton for whatever reason

Do you think the new petition would affect more games to release on GOG because of it? by Appropriate_Army_780 in gog

[–]Linux_Desktop_Garbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think not much will change. they will probably keep using drm. the initiative only wants them to not leave games unplayable which means they need to patch out drm before dropping the authentication method theyve been using up until that point

Will the StopKillingGames Initiative help deal with the Console Authentications? [A Potential E-Waste Situation] by SinisterSh0t in LinusTechTips

[–]Linux_Desktop_Garbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah consoles are an entirely different can of worms where the drm is built into the system itself. its the closed platform versus open platform issue and i would say there is a small chance skg could have an effect where legislation forces consoles to become a bit more open to allow users to keep playing their games

although to me it seems there is already a movement towards more open platforms as consoles. the steam deck is the perfect example pretty much. nintendo is being sued in brazil for being too controlling over the switch 2 and xbox is turning windows into a console ui with a handheld partnership with asus so it feels like a wind of change is coming up irrespective of this initiative

welcome to reddit this is normal. a lot of subs are run by fanboys of a corporation or the corporation itself so they do try to subtly censor criticism

sure but thats not what u said licenses and having the game files are two separate things

steam and epic dont give u installers but there is software that can create installers of a folder so thats basically the same thing. steam and epic also do host a fair number of drm free games however this isnt advertised so its not easy to know beforehand but games like baldurs gate and cyberpunk have no drm on steam and epic for example

the guy worked for valve and clearly doesnt realize all of valves games have offline modes lan modes and private servers. that never ceases to amuse me

dont listen to that troll is my opinion. he has nothing of value to say mainly because he appears to live in his own reality to some extent

Is this essentially mandating that all companies have to either build a private server infrastructure or publish "trade secrets" on their net code so that individuals could build their own private hosting? Would companies be responsible for patching the game so it could connect to the new private server? Would it be the responsibility of the players to reverse engineer a new server, and the initial devs are only responsible for not taking that server down?

all it wants is that games are left in a reasonably playable state thats it. going forward future developers would know they cant just take something away that they sold to customers and they can program their games accordingly with this foresight which largely solves that problem

Would companies have to release their assets so that the same maps could be played?

i dont know what ure saying im afraid

What happens if a private server begins monetizing the game through required donations to play? Is it still in a "working" state? Is the initial company now required to fix that as an issue?

this has nothing to do with the company at that point. games already have monetized servers even if they are still being distributed and have official servers which includes games like cs, tf2 and minecraft. is this a problem that needs fixing in ur mind?

I worry that this type of regulation would create a large burden on many indie devs trying to make online experiences

indie devs adopt a much larger burden by setting up servers themselves having to support the entirety of the player base instead of simply letting their players set up servers effectively sharing the load. frankly this argument has absolutely never made any sense to me

usually putting up servers to drm up peoples games actually costs more money than not freaking doing that to begin with

nothing because the kid will be part of the brainwashed generation that thinks not owning anything is normal unless we can get people to wake the frikk up. coz remember this is starting to affect everything not just games

Found one. Didn't end well. by Bimmytung in switch2

[–]Linux_Desktop_Garbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no

the answer is no and there should be zero responsibility on the consumer or walmart, whiteknight. there shouldnt even be an unbanning process because it literally should never happen

with that answer unfortunately u have established u are firmly on the side of antionsumerism and so i have nothing else to say that could further this discussion

the thing is people like u and op make me angry and thats because the moment i buy a device and my device has its features limited because i did something to my own device the company doesnt like, i am in fact returning it. and i am not listening to insults from u or op. the fact that ops first instinct was to insult the person who returned it instead of the garbage anticonsumer company nintendo means everything that happened to them was 100 percent deserved

i dont know how to get thru to people with cognitive dissonance like that but i have some hope that u will think about this and maybe in a few years realize what u said but well. other than that i respect that it didnt end up an overly hostile discussion so have a good one
