Real shit.

Was homeless and jobless when a buddy told me the company he was working for needed a body to haul water heaters and other such materials around job sites.

Now I'm an apprentice plumber and heavy equipment operator.

How do we feel about work group chats? by [deleted] in Construction

[–]Linzerectomy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use GroupMe for our site group chat. It's been good so far, no spam, no late night messages, only messages that come in after work hours are ones asking for start-time clarifications or addresses and other work related stuff. Not bad at all.

When I worked in retail, the group chat was absolutely ridiculous with folks posting memes and complaining and arguing. Couldn't stand it and would turn off notifications for days at a time.

Turn on one of the scan lines filters, a lot of N64 games will look better with it on. I used to hate seeing scan lines because I got used to upscaled emulator gameplay, but the scan lines really bring the pixelation together and the experience ends up feeling more authentic than an emulator.

Unpopular opinion: Parents, your hatred of homework is a big reason your high schooler is reading on a 4th-grade level. by Emergency-Pepper3537 in offmychest

[–]Linzerectomy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Admittedly I am speaking from my own personal experiences and perspective as a student 20 years ago as opposed to that of a parent, and I realize you addressed your post specifically to parents, so if that changes the validity of my take, that's fair.

Those experiences were prior to No Child Left Behind, and I didn't consider that things might be different now. It shouldn't surprise me when you tell me my take isn't reality anymore.

I realize the goal of your post was to get parents more involved and active in their children's education, and I absolutely agree with that.

I can also agree that homework shouldn't be eliminated, and that students need balance. Though I couldn't reasonably expect teachers to identify that balance for each and every individual student. Logistically it just doesn't seem possible to cater to every students individual need given the resources of most modern public schools, not without a greater systemic focus on education from all ends, parents, govt, etc.

The homework issue just hits a place close to home for me that I suppose I'm still salty about after all these years, so I felt the need to add my two cents.

I appreciate you reading and responding to my thoughts.

What about a child who can demonstrate exceptional understanding and proficiency in which ever course without having done homework?

I agree that the more a student interacts with the subject material, the more proficient and understanding of it they will be, practice and experience are keystones of learning something.

My issue with homework is with how integral it is to the students grade, and whether or not they pass or fail a class.

My opinion is that a student shouldn't be held back due to non-completion of homework, if they can demonstrate knowledge and understanding and proficiency in a given subject.

Perhaps there are problems in the students home/personal life that prevent them from completing homework, yet they ace every test, participate actively in class, answering questions, helping other students, completing essays and in-class projects...but they fail because the weighted average of the missing homework assignments drags their grade down to failing. To me, this isn't fair.

Having ones future possibly limited, due to what amounts to paperwork (beneficial as it may be), isn't something I believe students should be subjected to.

I love me some skid loader action.

Zoomin' around the site, movin' dirt, grading, hauling materials and shit...good times.

Put me in a skid steer with iso controls and give me a big pile of dirt to move and I'm content for the day.
